This is a retelling of the last part of old Germanic tale Nibelungenlied, the strange story of Kriemhild (called Gudrun in the book) who marries King Etzel (the Germanic name of Attila the Hun) in order to revenge the murder of her first husband, Siegfrid, by King Gunther (Gundohar) and his brother Hagen (Hagano).
