Dotty, stripy, straight, and swirly—patterns are all around us. How many different patterns can you find pictured in this book?

Wow! For younger children this is a challenge right out of Where’s Waldo? I am still counting as I write this. Wow! Flowers, furniture, toys, sidewalks, anything you might see have patterns. There are numerous patterns in Spotty, Stripy, Swirly: What are Patterns? Stripes, swirls, dots, circles, lines--the options are endless. But what is a pattern? This is the subject o...more

Spotty, Stripy, Swirly: What Are Patterns? is a book in the Clever Concept series by Jane Brocket. The book uses vivid photographs to teach what a pattern is, how to recognize specific patterns, and where some patterns can be found. Stacking and sorting objects to create patterns is illustrated and encouraged. The images used to demonstrate patterns include flowers and leaves in nature, food displays in stores, cake decorations, quilts, afghans, and gardens. Some of the patterns used include str...more

Spotty, stripy, swirly - patterns are everywhere. You can find them in flowers. You can find them in food. You can even find them in socks. All you need to do is look around you to find patterns in everything. With colorful, eye-catching pictures of everything from tea cozies to sunlit benches, Jane Brocket shows us what a pattern is; how patterns are made; and how patterns can be simple or complex. This book will have your child running around finding patterns in everything.

Great for Lessons on Patterns

Spotty, Stripy Swirly is an excellent current resource for early elementary lessons on patterns. The pictures are clear, vibrant, and easily recognizable items visible in everyday life. It is an excellent attention grabber and starting place for the lesson, then classes could walk around identifying similar patterns, then making their own. Definitely a must buy for my early elementary library.

Starting with a younger reader-friendly definition of the word, "pattern," Jane Brocket's book explores the everyday patterns we may find around us. The photo illustrations in the book are stunning, each inviting the young reader to find and to consider the shape on the page. Gentle invitations to explore some patterns that Brocket describes as "dizzying." Invitations too for younger readers to explore their environments to find patterns.

Spotty, Stripey, Swirly is one of the newest additions to author Jane Brocket’s Clever Concepts line of non-fiction picture books. Like her other books, this one is not traditionally illustrated but is filled with photos that Brocket has taken herself. As you can tell from the title Spotty, Stripey, Swirly is about finding and recognizing patterns all around us.

Stripes, dots, zig zags, and circles abound, punctuated by Brocket’s signature style of bright, colorful photographs. Using eye catchin...more

Love this book! Not only is it perfect for introducing patterns to children, but it also has beautiful pictures, and it encourages discovery. I'd recommend this to any elementary school teacher or anyone who wants to take an interesting look at various patterns. It would be perfect paired with an activity where children could search for patterns around them then create their own patterns.

Beautiful photographs highlight the patterns visible in everyday life. I look forward to sharing this with my students, followed by an immediate exploration of patterns in our library, classroom and school. I can see older students being inspired to create their own book of patterns.

This book would have been a big hit in our house about seven years ago. My daughter LOVED the idea of patterns when they covered it in Kindergarten. She was forever making and noticing patterns. She would have spent hours looking through this well done book.

Patterns are everywhere! This book has a lot of cool, colorful pictures that I really think students would enjoy! It would be an awesome book to do a lesson on patterns and colors.

I loved the pictures. It did remind me of Hoban's patterns, and I think it would be a great addition to a children's non-fiction collection.
Rachel
Simple overview of patterns, but it skips around alot and covers some information twice.
Robin
