I thought the story sounded familiar after listening for a while, then I remembered I had seen the story on Discovery ID. Mr. Phelps fills in the details of one woman’s obsession run amok to the point of murder and the ruination of many other lives. In one of the strangest true-crime stories I’ve ever heard, attorney Beth Carpenter was fixated on her younger sister’s daughter Rebecca and wanted guardianship of Rebecca. Sister Kim was a single mother working odd jobs , and who, in Beth’s view, co...more
I saw this case on TV and it prompted me to pick this book up...of course, the case was much more complicated than a half-hour or hour TV show could get into. I'm still left with a lot of questions...Beth Carpenter was allegedly hell-bent on getting custody of her niece away from her sister because Carpenter thought the brother-in-law was abusing the niece, but didn't seem to have the same concerns about the sister's other children or any evidence to back up her claim...I think there was a lot m...more
Well, if you think YOUR family is fucked up, just read this book. The kid is like some piece of meat that the grandparents and aunt want custody of, so they figure the best way is to murder the father so they can get custody, because obviously the mother (their daughter/sister) is too lame and to beaten down by them over the years to fight. Yikes, I wonder what ever happened to the poor kid.

A great book written by Mr. Phelps. Beth Carpenter and her family could have had a better result of the situation if they would have gotten along with the victim. "Buzz" was changing his ways and taking strides on becoming more responsible to his new family but never got a chance to complete his personal goals. Beth let her emotions take control and everything went bad. In over all everybody lost. A tragic end because of bad thinking and decisions.
