This is a solid Scandinavian crime novel, which weaves together scenes of domesticity and scenes of horror, in a social democratic context that manages to have its fair share of religious fanatics. I would have rated it higher, but I felt that the use of the "omniscient" narrator sometimes got in the way of the story. I prefer to have everything necessary to the final understanding of the plot emerge from the story, rather than have the omniscient narrator come up with a lot of extra, missing mat...more

The Preacher starts with a six-year-old boy finds the body of a woman. Underneath it there are two skeletons, presumingly belonging to two young women who disappeared twenty years before. Evil has returned to Fjällbacka (maybe it has never left) and Detective Patrik Hedström leads the investigation to find out who the perpetrator is. Everything seems to point out to the Hults, family of religious fanatics and criminals, with an ongoing feud. Then, another girl goes missing, and Patrik finds it i...more

So we continue with our two main characters, Ericka Falck and Patrik Hedström. Now, however, Ericka is pregnant and physically unable to contribute much to the investigation. In fact, she is almost entirely sidelined. So what does she do in this book, apart from being heavily pregnant and uncomfortable in the heat? She reluctantly looks after two sets of visitors who invite themselves to the summer house. The first lot are relatives (with dreadful children) to whom she has never been close, and...more

I really liked this book. It seems like each book she writes gets better and better. She again uses each character's voice, giving her books (in my opinion) a really cool detail that draws you in even more. I liked this book more than her first book because the murderer in this book has such a unique motive, and to be able to see that motive through his eyes, as well as through other people's eyes (in the very end of the book) was probably my favorite detail. This book has the same feeling as Fr...more

This is a follow up to the Ice Princess. This is really more like 3.5 stars, I marked it down from 4 stars because of the lack of Erica. This character that took center stage in the last book was relegated to the pregnant girlfriend role and I hated it. Her big story was having to deal with uninvited guests! Ridiculous! She seemed like part of the scenery. I also didn't like how Anna was relegated to a few pages, it seemed like the author just didn't know what to do with her after her big drama...more

No entanto, quando começam as revelações, começa a leitura compulsiva...more

Great book! I found it equally good with the first part of the series ("The Ice Princess") and I am looking forward to read the next part ("The stonecutter").

This book was OK, but that is all it was. The development of the mystery was not thrilling at all, as it was a bit boring and dragged out. way too much information about characters that don't matter and don't have any role in the solving of the murder. After a while I started to skip all the bits about Erica because they were so irrelevant. Too much vital clues about the murder are revealed too late in the book. I wish they were spread out more evenly, as the first part of the book felt a little...more

Proveniência: A minha biblioteca.
A minha Opinião:

Before I start with my review, I must inform that Prædikanten (The Preacher) is the second book written by Camilla Läckberg with the village policeman Patrik Hedström and the posh bookwriter from Stockholm Erica Falck. The first one is titled Isprinsessen (The Ice Princess) and you could find the review here.

Falck, who got knocked up by Hedström after they got together in the first book (one starts to wonder how slutty can one be? LOL Just kidding), was now moving to Fjällbacka, a small village...more

A Swedish police procedural that is supposed to be thrilling, or at least is advertised as a thrilling one. But all the concentrating on the people and their motives and relationships and their inner dialogue makes it a cozy procedural. I'd love more thrill.

A local detective in a small city somewhere in Sweden, Patrik Hedström, is investigating a murder. A naked, broken body is found close to holiday area, and two other bodies that turn out to be for people who disappeared 24 years ago, were fou...more

Camilla Lackberg is receiving some accolades as Sweden’s female Stieg Larsson. So I read “The Stonecutter,” the third in the series featuring Patrick Hedstrom and liked it well enough to go back and see what I missed in the first two books. I was able to find an ebook publication of “The Preacher” in our digital public library. Since this is the second in the series, I seem to be working backwards! This time, the large cast of characters was a bit easier to take, although the “Washington Post” r...more

In the summer of 2003, in Fjällbacka, Sweden, the newly dead body of a young girl is found on top of the skeletons of two other dead girls who had been missing since 1979. Detective Patrik Hedström, who we met in Lackberg’s previous book, The Ice Princess, is called back from his vacation to take charge of the case.

Hedström now lives with Erica Falck, who is eight months pregnant with their baby. (Erica was the main character in The Ice Princess.) It is hot, and Erica is miserable, but Patrik's...more

"The Preacher" is Swedish author Camilla Lackberg's second police mystery mystery. I did not read the first one, and think after this book, probably will not. As I said in the past about my reviews of book and critique of authors' works is often based upon my reading preference at the time of reading it. The story is set in Fjallbacka, a Swedish coastal town and begins with a young female’s body found murdered. On further investigation her body is placed on top of the remains of two young girls...more

How much does parenting matter, or rather, how much can you screw up a kid if you really tried? Almost every plot, both main and background, focus on a parent child relationship. At center we have three generations of fathers and sons creating an environment where horrific crimes against young girls could be permitted. But every side plot also involved some parent child relationship with a sliding scale of disfunctionality.

The plot successfully exposes the pitfalls that can have deadly conseque...more

Sama má segja með systur hennar, hennar hlutar í sögunni voru fáir, smáir og illa unnið með þá en þeir eru greinilega hluti af einhvers konar "long game" seríunnar. Til þess að það virki verður að gefa aðeins meira í hverri bók. Fyrir þá sem...more

After years of anticipation (on my part, at least) Camilla Lackberg's first novel, The Ice Princess was finally published in the U.S. a month ago. (It's been in English translation in the UK and Canada since 2008.) I'm happy to say that the book really delivers--it reminded me a lot of Karin Fossum's Don't Look Back with its portrayal of a claustrophobic small town rife with secret scandals and tensions. In The Ice Princess, Lackberg did a great job of imbuing each character--even minor ones--wi...more

It's one the most boring books I've read in a loooooooong time. A friend left it in my house after she visited a couple of weeks ago, having bought it typically in one of the airport bookshops. Now I know why she didn't take it with her to read on the return flight. I am lying, I didn't read it. I stopped after the first 40 or so pages. I didn't identify with any of the characters, none of which came over as living people I might take an interest in. Couldn't care less whether they were alive or...more

A serial killer who preys upon young women seems to have re-emerged after a twenty year absence. A young detective from a small police force in a community not accustomed to such horrifying types of crime frantically seeks to solve the case before the latest abducted girl loses her life. Threads of the investigation keep leading him and fellow investigators to the properties of a mysterious family of longstanding reputation in the area. Meanwhile at home, his first child is expected to arrive so...more

Second in the series featuring Patrik Hedstrom and his girlfriend Erica Falck. Erica is very pregnant and it is very hot in their seaside town of Fallbacka. A young woman is found dead on top of 2 skeletons, and then another woman is abducted. Patrik is placed in charge of the investigation and must cope with an angry family of suspects as well as lees than competent colleagues and a mercurial boss. Camilla Lackburg continues to develop her characters while she presents a satisfying murder myste...more

It's wonderful to find a new author with a series to read! Lackberg was recommended by a book club friend who relishes dark Scandinavian books with flawed characters and not-always-happy endings. It was good knowing this up front, so I wasn't expecting a light, happy book.

What the author delivered was a well-crafted, intelligent read that had enough twists and turns to be interesting but not so many that I lost belief. The characters were varied, important to the story but not overdone. There w...more

Genial. Ameno. Breath-taking. Increíble la familia Hult. Muy cluedo. Miy recomendable.

This is the second of Camilla Lackberg's novels featuring Patrick and Erica. Somehow I managed to read the third in the series The Stonecutter but I'm now fully up-to-date.

As with the other two the current day crimes being investigated by the police have strong links with the past. The police team, headed by Patrick, have a particular difficult time in dealing with this case because they are short of manpower and, amongst those actually on the job, two are lightweight and useless. Patrick's part...more

Born in 1974, Camilla Läckberg graduated from Gothenburg University of Economics, before moving to Stockholm where she worked for a few years as an economist. However, a course in creative crime writing became the trigger to a drastic change of career. Her first four novels all became Swedish bestsellers. Läckberg's books are always set in or around her birthplace, the small Swedish west coast tow...more
