Asia’s Children Tell Their Stories in No Longer a Slumdog

“He would lock me in a small room with the animals. Days turned into weeks, and my stomach would growl. He never gave me enough to eat,” said Nadish. “Weeks turned into months, and my body would ache. The work was hard, and there was never enough time to rest. Months turned into years, and I began to think that this...more

This book stirred up all sorts of things in me. Having been to India several times, I see the faces of the children in my mind almost every single day. The stories KP wrote about the children were disturbing on so many levels. Slavery and the sex trade is rampant in India, as well as mafia-like gangs that prey on street children as seen in the movie Slum Dog Millionaire.

I'm thankful for Gospel for Asia and the amazing work they are doing among the children in India. This book was both dishearte...more

What a great book - a heart and eye-opener. I've had it sitting on my shelf, which serves as my "to read" queue, for at least a year. Not avoiding it just waiting until it felt right to read it. There's actually never a wrong time to read a book like this.
K.P. Yohannan started Gospel for Asia about 32 years ago and the heart behind it was to share the love of Christ with the people of Asia. Read about this incredible man here: http://www.gfa.org/about/kpyohannan/

No Longer a Slumdog is about the mercy and grace of the Lord God Almighty's miracles. This book tells you about the kids and adults baby steps or adventures toward God. This book tells about kids being abused and raped and many other horrible things but they tell us about how they got to know the Lord God Almighty personally. Every kid in this book has a story to tell. They maybe had their parents die from suicide or they just became il...more

K.P. runs Gospel for Asia (GFA), a missionary organization that has partnered heavily with our church. K.P. has spoken at our church several times, so I've heard firsthand how the poorer residents (the "untouchables") of the most poverty stricken areas of India are treated within the caste system. My wife and I are proud to support the ministry efforts of GFA and sponsor a child in Bridge of Hope, the program K.P. discusses in this book, that helps fund poor children's education. They pair you w...more

I highly recommend this book if your ever wonder what people's lives are like in third world countries. If you have a burden for those poor little children, this book will bring your heart closer to them. Enjoy the read!

Produced by the group "Gospel for Asia," this book discusses the lives led by Indian children and families that are members of the lower, rejected castes. The book is essentially a call for readers to donate to GFA centers in India which provide education about reading, math, science, nutrition, hygiene and Christ to these children and while I don't come away from reading as someone who will donate, it did cause me to think a lot about the situations of families in southern Asian countries. K.P. Yohannan, founder of Gospel for Asia, writes about the stunning poverty of the millions of people -- especially children -- in the Dalit caste of India. His organization has established Bridges of Hope centers in the hearts of these slums to provide for the material, educational and spiritual needs of these children. Yohannan encourages his readers to "sponsor" one or more of these children at $28/month to provide for basic needs. The promise is that all of your money goes directly to the B...more

This book is AMAZING! I will never stop praying for these children!

The stories recounted by the children about their abuse, abandonment by their parents, being sold to strangers to clean and for prostitution were heart wrenching. But this is their reality.

The Bridge of Hope helps educate kids on hygiene etc. and introduces them to the healing powers of God.

Not only are the children's health improved, but parents are counseled and families remain together therefore building a solid foundation of hope for these children.

Communities and villages are also transfo...more

First book to really touch my heart.

I thought "No Longer A Slumdog" was astounding. The book didn't just follow one story about one single child living in the Slum, but it followed multiple stories of children who have been through these horrible experiences. Most people don't understand that it doesn't just happen in one single place, or just to a few children, but to hundreds of thousands of children every day. They are forced to become laborers, sex slaves, or servants. People don't understand that some parents sell their child...more

"No Longer a Slumdog" is a book about how God touched the author's heart for the Untouchables of India which lead to opening Bridge of Hope schools for these forgotten and often abused children. He tells their stories and gave surprising facts and statistics about the Indian culture. I had no idea that there were so many Untouchables.

I've read some autobiographies about Untouchables and about human trafficking in India, so I was familiar with much of the information, but it's clear that this aut...more

I was feeling sorry for myself the day this came in the mail. I quickly began to read it and was glad that I had ordered this book about a week earlier. As soon as I opened the book, my mental attitude changed and I was no longer focused on me, but on the 11 million abandoned children in India that are suffering; lonely, starving, and unloved.

I won't ever be able to forget about the little boy who found his only nourishment by lying on the street nursing from a dog. The locals called the dog hi...more

This book is a collection of stories from a group called "Bridges of Hope" in India. The stories show the extreem need of the lower class children who are starving for food and begging on the streets. Yohannan, the writer, is really trying to show God's compassionate heart for the world to try to love and care for needs in the midst of extreme need. He urges us at the end of the book that now that we are aware of these needs, we have the obligation to give, serve, and love.

While I do not disagr...more

In the book, "No Longer A Slumdog" the author K.P. Yohannan wished to get a message through to the readers. This message was that young children around the world live in extreme poverty and face danger everyday of their lives. The author did a fantastic job of getting his message across. He used vivid descriptions and stories to make me visualize these poor children. The author went over to India and he leads an organization called The Bridge of Hope. This organization takes kids in, feeds them...more

It told a lot of true, heartbreaking stories of little children who had been abandoned or abused.
My favorite one was of a little boy who had been kidnapped, sold, and forced into slavery. For two
years, he cleaned animal stalls and was locked in a shed at night. After months of prayer,(from the
GFA-Gospel for Asia workers) he and a fellow slave-boy were able to escape. This book gives real hope
to the Dalits and the "unclean" Indians who are at the bottom-of-the-bottom of the caste system.

This book is a quick read but certainly not an easy read. My daughter is a huge fan of Gospel for Asia and it's easy to see why. The founder is a strong defender and advocate of the vulnerable and powerless. The book is full of stories of people whose lives have been changed. It's very inspiring to read and know that there's hope for the hopeless.

Very well written, from K.P.'s heart. If you stay with him through this book, he does a great job of balancing the horrors of the situations he describes with stories of loving interventions by Christians. It is really a book of hope.

As you might expect, K.P. writes with a huge burden in his heart for the many, many children and families who still need help. Rather than throwing up our hands in despair, we can help one person. You see in these pages how God works powerfully in answer to prayer.

Quick read. Written to tell of the great need in India, the work that gospel for Asia: bridge if hope is doing, and how the average middle-class American Christian can be involved through prayer, awareness, and child sponsorship. The book seems a very effective way to communicate these things.

This book opens your eyes to what life is like in the third world countries. The truth on what happens is real and makes you really appreciate all we have here. My heart goes out to those who are poor and have nothing.... literally nothing....even family trades you in for food!!!!! I would love to take all the kids and love on them for a while. This book is devastating, powerful, and moving! Every child should go on a mission trip to experience poverty. Than to appreciate all we have.

This is another one of those books that will make you pray and get to work. It brought my heart to tears reading the stories of those beautiful, helpless children. Anyone who knows me personally knows about my unexplained fascination with Middle Eastern culture. I've always wanted to adopt children from Indian--little girls, preferably--and this book has done nothing but encourage me all the more to do just that. I love that the author emphasized the importance of nurturing and ministering to th...more

I would encourage you all to get this book. It is heartbreaking book to read about the life of those as a Slumdog in India! I am thankful for Gospel of Asia Bridge of Hope to change their life to have true hope in Christ and better education too.

This book just became one of my top 10 favorite books! This is a book that EVERY person should read ~ to get an idea of how rough life can be for children in other parts of the world..... and what we can do to help them.

Got this book free from Gospel For Asia.
It is the story of schools in India and how God is moving there in amazing ways. A wonderful read though heart wrenching at times to hear of the situations that children (and adults) live in. The statistics and stories of oppression are moving, but the great thing is the book tell story after story of success of people breaking free and most importantly finding Christ.
The purpose of the book is to inform you, get you to pray and also sponsor a child in th...more

reads more like an advertisement for child sponsorship than a story, but eye-opening if you've never lived outside of the developed world as to the reality that many children face every day.

At Creation Festival Northwest, Gospel For Asia representatives handed out thousands of copies of this book.
I took my time reading it over a couple of months, taking a chapter at a time. The stories are compelling, the work that GFA is doing in India and Asia is important, life-changing work, aiding children in poverty.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in world missions and aid work.

God has given us a wonderland, gifts, grit, gold and daily we're catapulted into this diamond-rock-hard potential of living to our potential or holding up a mirror to the woundedness of human nature and humanity.

Dr. K.P. Yohannan has been crisscrossing the globe for the last 40 years, challenging the body of Christ to discipleship. His call to a radical lifestyle—with an all-out commitment to Jesus—has left its impact on nearly every continent. To the Church caught up by the tidal waves of compromise and self-preservation, Yohannan's life message is as fresh as today's podcast yet as timeless as the scrip...more
