Short, self-published fantasy e-books are a hell of a nice change from fantasy doorstops, and A God-Blasted Land uses this exciting format well to gradually introduce a tantalising mythology but still leave us wanting more.

This is a self-described science fiction fantasy novel, but Carlon doesn't just use that broader canvass to throw in more cool stuff from two genres. He creates an intriguing ambiguity in that you don't know what will appear next to drive the story forward. Will it be an AI or...more

This is a science fiction fantasy story. It’s set in another world after an apocalyptic event called the Cleansing. There are remnants of the old world around to remind everyone how things used to be but are not the way of life anymore. I always find other people’s interpretation of these types of events fascinating.

Avril is a young man trying to find his way in the world. A car is his home and scavenging technology parts is his job. There are many secrets surrounding him and he’s not sure who c...more

This is a short but excellent first novel and a great introduction to a new world.

The book starts off at a slower pace, taking care to introduce these new characters and world to the reader. Around the middle, the action heats up and I found that I could not put it down till the end. The book is quite short, but a worthy start to a promising series.

I especially liked the fact that the author kept the story in this first installment limited to one general geographic area and a small number of (...more

I started reading this book as it's written by a colleague, and because I'm at home sick today - so in between bouts of flu I decided to download it onto my Kindle. I mean, at the ridiculous price, it's certainly not a question of budget!

That said and done, the start of the book is certainly gripping, and the characters well drawn, though the sci-fantasy dystopean world looks very bleak and familiar. But, the fact that I'm still reading and haven't tossed it aside shows that Lee tells a good sto...more

This is a really fresh piece of cross-genre writing set in an imaginative and well-realised world. Although short, it contains some genuinely surprising developments in both plot and character, and I especially liked some of the descriptions of future technology, such as the nutrition system. Support a new indie author and give it a go!

This was a fun read. The characters were engaging and I am left wondering what will happen to them next. I would have liked to have a few more details about the world the story was set in and its culture.

I write short science-fiction novels, usually with a post-apocalyptic flavor and a twist of fantasy. I'm lucky enough to have a day job working as a technical writer for an IT company. In 2004 I won the Antipodean Sci-Fi award for a story called Skin Deep.

I live in Brisbane, Australia, with my wife and three rowdy kids who keep me on my toes and keep life interesting. My current obsessions are run...more
