This is about a girl named Violet. She goes through some harsh things while her parents are divorced. Violet has a good relationship with her mom but doesn't exactly have a good relationship with her father. Her and her little sister has an adventure with finding the perfect man for her mother. They both are not exactly the normal type they have issues with school and other things as well.
I really like this book. My parents aren't divorce but it was very interesting to me. I think that Violet r...more

It was funny, adventurous, and when i read the part about the Dad cheating on the mom(When he was walking out putting on his belt) it made me want to be there to slap him across the face. There book shows that you have to learn to accept things and they way they work in a silly way.It is a must read book if you want to just chill and laugh out loud.

One of my favorite books, Dear George Clooney: Please Marry my Mom is such a good book. You follow Violet (I don't remeber how to spell her last name) as she has life as an older sibling with a single mom. Violet loves her mother and her sister, and after what happened with her mother, she wants them to be safe and happy. Susin Nielsen did a great job telling us about Violet's history with, well, pretty much everything. It didn't get boring when she told us these memories, nor were they pointles...more

Twelve-year-old Violet is fed up. After her movie director father leaves her mom for a blonde trophy wife and moves to LA with her and their new twin daughters, Violet’s mom starts dating again with a vengeance. The trouble is, she can’t seem to pick a decent man, and each one seems worse than the last. When her mom brings home her latest boyfriend, the unfortunately named Dudley Wiener, Violet decides to take control. She’s certain that George Clooney would be perfect...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from the beginning to the end. Susin Nielsen didn't waste time being happy or cheery or unrealistic. She got straight to the points, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Violet Gustofan's parents divorced three years ago, and things with her mother haven't been the same ever since. Mrs. Gustafon (Ingrid) is desperate to have a man in her life. She's had a string of men since the divorce- each one worse than the last, in Violet's opinion at least. And then...more

Having already read Nielsen's Word Nerd, I was looking forward to read this book. The awesome cover and title alone was enough to grab my attention at first.

Following the divorce of her parents, Violet is angry with her father for leaving their family and starting up with a new, young, trophy wife in L.A. What is worse, her father and his new wife have twin baby girls ...twin baby girls to whom Violet (accidently on purpose) suggest eat cat poo in the opening chapter. (Really). When Violet's mom...more

Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom
or, just adopt me (come on George, I know you would love a 28 year old daughter)....but seriously, how can you not want to pick up a book with a title like that? It just begs to be read.

Here is the synopsis off Goodreads
Violet's TV-director dad has traded a job in Vancouver for one in Los Angeles, their run-down house for a sleek ranch-style home complete with a pool, and, worst of all, Violet's mother for a trophy wife, a blonde actress named Jennica. Vio...more

Reason for Reading: I am fond of the publisher, the cover caught my attention and the summary sounded original. It didn't hurt that the word "George Clooney" was in the title either!

What an amazing little gem of a book! I absolutely giggled with delight as I read about Violet's dilemma and what lengths she goes to. Converse-wearing 12 yo Violet's parents have been divorced for two years. Her TV producer father left them for a trophy wife, who was expecting twins and off they moved to LA. Violet'...more

To really show you just how wonderful this book is, I would pretty much have to reproduce its entire 229 pages here, which would probably get me sued. So I won’t do that. But I am going to share some of my favorite passages with you. Truth be told, I highlighted almost the entire book, so even picking out favorite passages of my many, many favorite passages has been a chore. I’m going to limit myself, therefore, to passages from the first half of the novel so I don’t spoil too much for you. Beca...more

Violet Gustafson has a pretty hard life. Her parents are divorced and now her dad, a TV director has left her family in Vancouver while he is married to a blonde trophy wife and is living in LA. Not to mention her mom is dating a total loser named Dudley Wiener. So Violet decides to take her mother's love life in her own hands and set her up with the perfect man, George Clooney. Follow Violet and her best friend Phoebe through their antics in this hilarious book.

It's been two years since twelve-year-old Violet Gustafson's parents were divorced. Her father, a television director, met and later married the star of the show he worked on. They created a new family, one that didn't include Violet or her younger sister, Rosie. Now, their mom, a hair stylist, tries to make ends meet while going on dates with unsuitable (according to Violet) men.

The latest is Dudley Wiener. That's right, Dudley Wiener. His name goes hand in hand with his appearance, and it's up...more

I really enjoyed reading this book. As a teacher I run across so many kids whose parents have split up and they all handle it differently.
Violet and Rosie are the victims in this story. Their father is a film director and their mother was a former hairstylist to the stars. When dad decides to ditch mom for a new blonde bombshell he is also ditching his kids. Five year old Rosie handles this by beginning to wet the bed at night and Violet just gets angry. To make matters worse, when they visit a...more

Dear George Clooney... is a cute young read. It follows the story of sisters Violet and Rosie, whose parents are divorced. Dad is remarried to Jennica (also the star of a movie he produced and the woman with whom he cheated on their mom with), mom has had a long string of bad boyfriends. Her current one, Dudley Weiner (points to Susin Neilsen for coming up with such an awful name!) seems to be a good guy, but Violet hates him. Instead, she starts a mission to get George Clooney to marry her mom....more

Background: Violet is going through some stuff, real complicated stuff. Her father has left her mother, and she is left to face the breakdown that occurs thereafter. Including but not limited to: spying, punching people, feeding people poop, writing George Clooney, stealing golf carts, and standing up for her broken family on all fronts.

Review: I loved reading this book! I requested it and was thrilled to get it. This was a spectacular read, Violet is a great character to follow, she is sarcasti...more

I wanted to like this book, I honestly did. Sounded like a premise some MG students could get behind and Violet sounded like someone they could relate to.

Here's the Goodreads summary:

I didn't realize when I got this book through an early reviewer program that it was a style of YA/kidlit I don't favor, so I'll try to be generous.

The main character's mother is dating again (ugh) after her divorce. Naturally, she keeps going after the wrong people. If she's not going to take their father back (and admittedly, the guy married his mistress, that's not going to happen), she should at least pick somebody better than all the losers!

Really, the plot goes where you expect: Mother's la...more

Even though reading a 12-year-olds immaturity was really irritating at times, i was able to enjoy the book because i can sympathize with Violet. My mom has terrible taste in people she decides to date too. Now theres an illegal immigrant who cant speak english living in my house and she has no personnality whatsoever. But i cant change the fact that my mom likes her or whatever. No matter how frustrating the person is. Point is, even though Violets actions dont really make sense alot of the time...more

"Dear God, or Allah, or Buddha or Zeus or Whoever-You-Are, please let this one be okay. Please don't let him be a cheater (Jonathan), a cheapskate (Alphonese), an alcoholic (Carl), a creep (Guy), married (Larry), or a general, all-around jerk (Dimitri, Pauo, Jake, Yuri).

Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom is not the type of the YA novel I usually get the chance to read because protagonists as young as Violet don't always appeal to me... but I'm so so glad I did read this one! Right from the get-go, as soon as I read the title in fact, I knew I was going to like this novel. I mean, doesn't its name already put a smile on your face? It certainly did for me... and that smile grew on my face as soon as I read the very first line.

I read this because one of my Grade 7 writing students was reading it and told me it "is soooooo good!" She even read me the first sentence and said, "How can you not love a book that starts like that?" I have to agree, it's a very fun book.

I really enjoyed it, read it all in one sitting. Only thing I wish was there wasn't a Tourette Syndrome quip. It really is a pet peeve of mine though, but I've already done my rant on this topic here: http://joelleanthony.com/daily-writin...

Twelve-year-old Violet is mad at the world, or at least at her mom for making poor choices (in Violet's mind) when it comes to boyfriends, at her dad for leaving the famiy to marry a blond bimbo, and at George Clooney for not writing back to her. Violet's mom met George years ago and Violet thinks a letter asking George for a date, on behalf of her mom, is a way to get rid of the most recent bad potential stepdad--Dudley Wiener. There are many laugh-out-loud moments but Violet did rub me the wro...more

Violet is upset over her parent's divorce. She feels abandoned by her father and resentful of his new wife and their 2 kids (her half-sisters). Tired of her mother's bad dating habits, she takes it upon herself to hook up her mom with the ultimate male: George Clooney. Of course, things do not go as planned, and this leads to some moments of self-realization.

I picked this up because it is a 2012 Red Maple nominee.

I finished it because, like her previous novel, her writing style is engaging, and...more

After her mother's divorce, and multiple dating disasters, including the current one, whose name is Dudley WIENER, Violet decides to hook up her mom to the ultimate man-George Clooney. But of course in order for this book to be interesting, things don't exactly go as planned.

I started reading this book because I like George Clooney and because it is a Red Maple book. I couldn't really relate to this book because my parents aren't divorced, but I too would be extremely angry, and IF I was her m...more

Being 12 and dealing with your parents divorce can be pretty tough. But add in the fact that your dad married Jennica , moved to LA and you now have twin half sisters. Plus the fact that your mom has started dating Dudley Wiener ,you often have to pick your sister up from day care and deal with Jean -Paul , your French Canadian named crush. Violet has a lot on her plate! She handles it all with a little sarcasm , a sense of humor and only a few emotional hiccups.

I loved this book and was not su...more

Susin Nielsen's Violet has an extremely realistic voice and outlook. Frustrated by the losers her mother continues to bring home, she writes to someone she thinks will be absolutely perfect: George Clooney. But even perfection has issues.

Violet's feelings, outlook, and choices are simultaneously understandable, humorous, off-...more

What I have to say about this book, hum... it was AWESOME! Seriously I swear the author stole a kids diary 'cause it was that real! The divorce, the crush, the step mom, the boyfriend, the dot, dot, dot... (I'm having nightmares right now) Violet is such an awesome and funny chrarcter she makes everything over dramtic (well she did see get moms boyfriend in his under pants...) The plot awesome! It seemed like a roller coster, one moment it's all rainbows and sunshine then... klunk (Glade langu...more

What a hilarious book! Not that the subject matter was hilarious - anything but - I just loved the way it's presented. Family relations are always a roller coaster ride, especially within a split family situation and this one is no exception.

It's a classic case of teenage angst, but with all the factors of school, Mom dating, junior high insecurities, siblings and Dad's second wife and family issues it's a crazy story. Susin Nielsen handled it with a lot of humor and insight. A really touching,...more

This book was a pleasant surprise! It had everything that a book should have: a real concept (divorce of the parents), humour, wit and truth. I especially loved the ending (don't worry, I won't ruin it!) but everything was perfect. I am extremely happy that I won this book on Goodreads because if I hadn't, I would have never bought this book myself. However, for those of you who didn't win it, please go out and get a copy because you will not regret it! I can't wait to read another book written...more

Gemini Award-winner Tundra author Susin Nielsen got her start feeding cast and crew muffins and bologna sandwiches on the popular television series, Degrassi Junior High. They hated her food (a fact that’s memorialized forever in a poem the cast wrote: “An ode to Susin, the Bran Muffin Queen, we eat them, we die, then we turn green”). Luckily for Susin, they saw a spark in a spec script she wrote....more
