As the book opens, it is October 24th, and things are gearing up for one of the biggest events of the year in Vegas: the Houdini Séance, held on Halloween, the anniversary of the great magician’s death, attended by most of the tourists who have invaded the town, as well as many prominent magicians

All manner of quirky characters are introduced, probably none more deserving of that description than Lucky’s mother, Mona, owner of Mona’s Place, “the self-styled ‘Best Whorehouse in Nevada.’” The family dynamics are unusual, to say the least, but never less than interesting. Her friends include Federika “Flash” Gordon, “Las Vegas’ most tenacious investigative reporter,” and young LVPD detective Romeo [his name, not a soubriquet]. Much of the early part of the book deals with Lucky’s problem dealing with the fact that her recent love, Vegas’ reigning female impersonator, now a budding rock star, has gone off to Europe to follow his dream, leaving her with “hormonally driven leaps of lust” sparked, literally, by the touch of any one of several male acquaintances and colleagues. Among the plot points are a top hat, a rabbit, death threats, a vanishing magician, an astronaut who talks to dead people, and a group of believers in “the murky realm of fringe science” attending a UFO conference.

As the author describes it, “Vegas is like Brigadoon - - a magical city that appears when the sun sets and the lights come on, where anything can happen.” I had not read the earlier entries in the series and did not know what to expect, but I enjoyed this tale of Lucky and her environs and found it a good summer read.

There are several reasons why I like Deborah Coonts’ character Lucky O’Toole. First off, she has a demanding yet rewarding job at a high profile, high-class hotel/resort in Las Vegas. There are several reasons why I like Deborah Coonts’ character Lucky O’Toole. First off, she has a demanding yet rewarding job at a high profile, high-class hotel/resort in Las Vegas. She also gets to wear designer clothes without worrying about how expensive they are, and she can wear high-heels and not trip or stumble in them (and her feet don’t get sore after five minutes like mine do!). Her tall, handsome, talented boyfriend looks good in both jeans and evening gowns. Her mother is an out-spoken ex-prostitute-now-madam. Her father is also her boss. Her assistant can anticipate her needs, even before Lucky knows what those are. Lastly (and probably the best of all), she gets to drive high-performance sports cars without paying for them. Yes, Lucky seems to have it all. Only in this book, she starts losing some of it.

It’s a fun ride whenever Lucky gets in the Ferrari and this time is no different - and another great adventure as I attempted to solve the mystery right along with her. This third installment in the series has Lucky dealing with magicians, UFOs, an ex-lover, a new lover, an old woman who wants to marry her dog, and an over-sexed couple from Muskogee, not to mention the usual chaotic family and friends. I’m hoping that some of these new characters make future appearances in Lucky books down the line.

It seems to me that the third book in a character series is typically where an author “jumps the shark” and tries to make the character more interesting by having them do outlandish and ridiculous things. Conversely, the character starts to die a slow and painful death, becoming less and less interesting with each book. Lucky, however, does not disappoint. She is strong-willed, just out-spoken enough to be interesting, and keeps her attraction to several men going strong. I mean, just because we decide to become monogamous with someone doesn’t mean we lose appeal for any other man on the planet; yet most books would have us believe that’s how it should be.

Coonts pshaws that theory. Lucky has a lover, Teddie, yet she has been fascinated and attracted to two other men at the same time – Dane Paxton, six-foot-four of rugged Texas stock, and Jean-Charles Bouclet, a yummy French chef she is currently working with on a new restaurant. *sigh* Yes, Lucky really does have it all.

This was a whirlwind of a story for me because there is just so much going on. That being said, I found there to be a very nice balance between the action and adventure parts of the story and the relationships, romantic and not. The one character issue I have with Lucky is that she says one thing and acts in a completely different manner when it comes to the romantic side of her life. With all that she has going on between her crazy job, parents who have reconnected, and the mystery she is trying to solve, I just don’t know how she has time at act upon all of the different men she is attracted too. And really how she can make decisions with one important person not even being there. As a whole, I think that I happy with the outcome of this story and where I think it might be going next. There are some major changes on the forefront and I think that they are going to be very exciting.

I really enjoy Deborah Coonts fun writing style and how she brings each and every character to life in such interesting manners. Normally, I think that I would be irritated with a story line of UFOs and magicians but Ms. Coonts found a way for even me to enjoy it. Perhaps it was the distraction of everything else going on. Overall, I am looking forward to book #4, I really hope there will be one.(less)

Alright Lucky! I enjoyed this book a lot more than the last. I was disappointed though, that Lucky is still having to solve murders. WTH is up with that? Why can't she just be the Customer Relations person for the hotel and nothing else? Coonts needs to just go ahead and declare Lucky a P.I. alongside The Beautiful Jeremy Whitlock and get it over with.

I was a little upset when Teddie started acting a fool and was being stand-offish towards Lucky. But, then I was hopeful that she and Dane might hook up, finally!
In the first two books, I was praying that she and Dane would be an item. Obviously, there was an attraction. I was overjoyed though, when she and Teddie finally realized their love for one another. He seemed like the perfect guy. I had a feeling though that he would become a flake once all the fame and fortune went to his head while he was out performing. So, it came as no surprise that he and Lucky called it splits afer one more rendevous. I'm thinking that Lucky won't be as intriguing once she's married off and probably this is what Coonts is thinking as well.
I really liked this book while I was reading it, but now that I'm actually writing the review, I'm going to change my rating to 4 stars. I now feel like it was missing something. The last page of the second book, Lucky Stiff tells us that Lucky's Mother, Mona is pregnant! But she really doesn't go into detail in the third book. I'm glad that they are finally going to go public with the secret of The Big Boss being Lucky's father. Yay for them. The truth will out!
You're in for a surprise when you find out who Lucky decides will be her next man. I was shocked! (less)

So Damn Lucky is the third installment in the Lucky O'Toole series written by Deborah Coonts. It is a highly entertaining and well written series. The author who lives in Las Vegas knows the city well and once again has portrayed it perfectly. This outing centers around magicians, science fiction and the lore of Area 51. All she can think of is how her relationship with her rock star boyfriend Teddie has hit the skids, and the lack of sex is starting to drive her a little mad. So mad she can't help but look twice at every attractive man, including attractive investigator Paxton Dane. A handsome french chef doesn't help matters either. Lucky wants desperately to have a life outside the hotel, but the shenanigans at the Babylon make that so difficult. Her mother Mona hasn't changed. Mona's personality is as loud as the color of her outfits. She's a retired madam and about to have another child with her longtime love, The Big Boss. It seems so odd to have a character named The Big Boss, but that's who he is to Lucky. He also happens to be her father, but that little tidbit is being kept quiet. After decades of not knowing who her father was, Lucky just isn't ready for their true relationship to be public. Lucky seems to be managing a three-ring circus in her personal and professional life.

And Dimitri Fortunoff's latest magic trick is about to consume Lucky's work and personal life.

Dimitri's attempt to replicate a trick by Houdini, leads to his death. Or does it? I found myself wondering the answer to that at every turn. He's a magician, people like him are masters of illusion. They can make large objects disappear, what will stop them from faking a death. But from the looks of it he is dead. Dimitri's body also disappears, and that is where the real fun begins. Unraveling the mystery is both funny and confusing. I say confusing because the world of magicians is a tough code to crack. No one wants to talk to Lucky or the police. If they do speak it's in code -- a complicated code. Area 51, UFOs, the magician code, and some really freaky people create an interesting mix in this book. Despite being a bit confused by the plot, I kept reading. With a mystery like this you have to keep going. You have to find out where it's going to end.

The book is also very funny. A sexually adventurous couple, a sweet old lady who wants to marry her dog, a "flashy" reporter, and Lucky's assistant Miss P provide a lot of comic relief. Despite the toughness Lucky exudes, Miss P isn't afraid to put Lucky in her place. But Lucky is no pushover either. She can be tough one minute and extremely vulnerable the next. She's the kind of person you would want on your side. Even when threatened she explores every possible lead. She doesn't give up easily. By the end there is hope that she can be as lucky in love as she is in her professional life.

I've read several of the Luck O' Toole books by Ms. Coonts. They are full of lots of info so you don't get confused about who is who and what is going on. I really like that in a book. This book was a disappointment after the first two mysteries that I loved. In this novel, the heroine, Lucky O'Toole, spends a lot of time boohooing about her relationship with her boyfriend, Teddy, who was a very funny drag queen in the first two books, and is now a world-traveling rock and roller. This author lives in Vegas and has created a very funny, real character named Lucky. She's in charge of the daily running of a fictional casino. There are several in the series and if you like to laugh out loud when you read, try this. The descriptions of Vegas and the people you meet will definitely prepare you for a Vegas visit. Lucky is back with another adventure - or rather, misadventure. I loved the premise of this one - magicians and aliens. It was completely different from anything I’ve ever read, and it certainly kept me guessing. It was interesting and mysterious, and a lot of fun.

Lucky continues to grow on me. She’s tough and no-nonsense and independent. I like that other ‘regular’ characters are developing too - Miss P, Mona, The Big Boss, as well as others. They’re such a big part of the story that it’s nice to see them evolving alongside Lucky.

I really wasn’t happy with how the Teddy storyline played out. It was upsetting, but it was also kind of all over the place. Lucky said how she’d loved him and given him her heart, but then she was over it, but then she wasn’t. She was so heartbroken, yet she has two other guys who she could potentially hook up with, and yet the Teddy relationship isn’t 100% over from the sounds of it. There are too many love interests - I can handle the occasional well-done love triangle, but a love quadrangle? I just think Lucky needs to get her head and heart together and figure things out before rushing into anything. I fear we’re heading into Janet Evanovich/Stephanie Plum territory where she just needs to make up her mind without wasting the reader’s time by stringing us along book after book.

Besides the tangled romances, my only real complaint is the same thing I mentioned in my reviews for the first two books - there are too many characters and almost too many subplots. It’s hard to keep everyone and everything straight. By the third book in, I have all the regulars figured out, but there are a lot of regulars, so when you throw in new people - and a lot of new people at that - it makes my head spin just trying to remember who’s who.

Overall, I’m still enjoying this series. Despite its issues, it’s actually one of my favourite series, and one that I always look forward to reading. I can’t wait for the next installment to see what happens! (less)

Teddy leaves her his sax, with no explanation why. And when he is back on the road he keeps calling her, wanting the friendship they once had.

A Magician disappears performing The Water Torture Stunt that Houdini performed back in his day. At first it appears the magician died, only discover he never made it to the hospital. Lucky with the help of Flash (her best friend) who is local reporter helps Lucky find things out, along with Romeo the local detective who’s first case was made due to Lucky’s help, and the Beautiful Jeremy Whitlock. They find out that sinister things are a foot. Delving deep into area 51 to find out what happened to the magician and his friends.

The Big Boss gets some exciting news from his girlfriend Mona, who’s pregnant with child. Having missed out on Lucky’s childhood he jumps at the chance to be part of the baby’s. Also Lucky, and The Big Boss decide that hiding the pedigree is long over due and screw those that want to write about his bastard child. In a heartbeat Lucky’s life is turned upside down, and we get to see the relationship between her and her father slowly start to repair itself. Lucky has since moved into the hotel. Putting as much distance between her and Teddy as possible.

Meanwhile two men are cozying up to Lucky. The french chef who wants Lucky to move in with him, which has rebound written all over it. That one she enters very slowly with getting to know each other. Then Paxton Dane who helps Lucky with the magician case she let’s him know she’s damaged and wants to start out as friends.

Me personally I have a feeling there is more to the Teddy breakup then is being revealed, I wonder if he returns how that will play out. Also I think Paxton Dane and Lucky would be great together. They seem to be a lot alike. This book as all Ms. Coonts books doesn’t fail to deliver. As long as she writes about Lucky I will always be a huge fan of her story telling, and reading about the bright lights of Vegas! Definitely a fan! Keep them coming Ms. Coonts!(less)

Another fun adventure for Lucky O'Toole, head of Customer Relations at the Babylon in Vegas. She runs all day and night in the city that never sleeps. This time, magicians and alien seekers fill the hotel and Lucky never runs out of things to cope with, along with her own set of personal problems. The series is a great antidote to those who loved the original Plum books. Lucky is funny, surrounded by good looking men and has a Birkin! I look forward to each and every one!

Feelin' lucky? These are good books! Fun and sexy. You can't help but love Lucky! She is full of moxy and adventure! No problem too big or too small that Lucky can't handle while sipping coffee and accessorizing with the best! The 'who done it' was fun...not a true MYSTERY...but still keeps you on your toes. Great Saturday afternoon book.

I am just loving this series. Great main character, decent mysteries, super setting and titilating relationships. Lucky O'Toole sounds like someone I'd love to know and have for a friend. I look forward to many more books in this series.

I continue to love Lucky's Las Vegas world, her fabulous cast of secondary characters, and the hijinx she falls into and solves. What a terrific series - never fails to put a smile on my face and keep me up too late reading!

This is the 2nd one of these I've read. I kind of like the Las Vegas setting. I've never been there and may never go there so it's kind of like reading about a mystery that takes place in a wild foreign country.
