George Stevens, to me, is very nearly a perfect film maker. I was thrilled when I read this book was coming out, I was not disapointed. A good read, a good examination of is films. Read the book, then find George Stevens Jrs.' documentary, it's excellent, too!
Surprisingly, this is the only in-depth bio of one of America's greatest filmmakers. He didn't direct that many pictures--only 25 feature films in 36 years, and nine of those were in his first four years. Yet he is still one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed directors of all time.
