This is Wurtele's debut novel and it was a riveting read. The book takes place during World War II in Tuscany, Italy and you felt like you were there with the vivid descriptions of the countryside, vineyards, food, villas, farmland and churches along with the Nazis, partisans, bombings, and tales of the war. It's a story of family, honor, strength and love along with all the fears invoked by the war as well as the horrors of the Jews being round...more

Giovanna Bellini is a very young 17 year old at the opening of this story occurring in 1944 Tuscany, Italy. The Germans have taken over Italy and confiscated the bottom floor of the Bellini home as residence for German soldiers. Giovanni really hasn't absorbed the horrors that the Nazis have perpetrated across Europe and are continuing to do so in her native land. But she is unfortunately about to learn, the hard way!

I really wanted to like this book. As an aspiring author, I HATE having to give a negative review, and avoid them at all cost. It really pains me to not complete a book. When I got to page sixty in THE GOLDEN HOUR by MARGARET WURTELE, I put it down.
Writing is subjective, so please don’t go by my review alone.
I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. The story randomly jumped around, and the dialogue was minimal. On a better note, I thought the writing was good, and the storyline had potent...more

Giovanna, a young, naïve and sheltered wealthy Catholic girl is coming of age in 1943 in northern Italy. She lives very comfortably in a villa with her parents but instead of enjoying parties and meeting young men now that she is 17, German officers commandeer her villa and push her family into the servants’ quarters. Having Nazi officers occupying her family home and the convent where she assists the nuns in their teaching makes the war personal and changes Giovanna’s life.

Wow. This is one of those books with one of those endings that just left me with my mouth hanging open.
It takes place in Italy during WWII. Italy has been taken over by Nazis. The heroine, Giovanna, is spending her teen years under German rule and has even had to give up most of her home to German soldiers. Her brother has failed to report for duty with Italian/German army and has run off to be a resistance fighter/partisan. Her father is angry as he is a devoted Fascist. (Actually, he's on the...more

I love reading stories which have a war setting; don't get me wrong, war stories are never a joy to read but they are part of history and they allow us to get a glimpse of the war through the eyes of the characters, even if they are fictional ones.

Reading the synopsis of The Golden Hour by Margaret Wurtele, I was immediately intrigued. Giovanna is a young woman living in Tuscany during World War II. Her village is occupied by the Germans as the Italians have now aligned themselves with the Allies. As the Italians wait for the Allied troops to liberate them, some, including Giovanna's brother, join the Resistance. Her brother asks Giovanna to help hide his Jewish friend Marco. And, of course, Giovanna will fall madly in love with Marco.

The Golden Hour started with Giovanna Bellini's father dying of cancer. This trigger a reflection of the difference in opinions between Giovanna and her father during World War II in Italy. It was that once moment of their lives there they both disagree with each other opinion. Givoanna's father was a passive resistant fearing that the Axis will win the war and wanted to be on their good side. Givoanna wanted to be part of the resistance against Germany after the German took over her home.

Actually, it was 2 1/2 stars, but as I'm a sucker for WWII novels, it leaned more to a 3 star rating. In the strangest comparison ever, this debut novel was like a slice of lemon meringue pie - a frothy sweet over a layer of tart sourness, enjoyable while it lasts, but with no lasting power.
The novel focuses on Giovanna Bellini, a 17 year old aristocrat living in Tuscany. German forces have invaded the area and taken over the bulk of the family villa, forcing the Bellini's to live in the servant...more

There was just something in her voice that pulled me in and kept me interested, all while I had my heart in my throat. Because even if this was somewhat more lighter, and dealing with the war from another point, it was still a time where she and the ones she loved could die at any moment. And I was scared.
I liked Giovanna's innocent because it was believable. She lived in a sheltered world, her mother was an aristocrat, her father had worked his way to the top. She was rich, and perhaps a bit sp...more

I really liked this book!!! Set in WW II Fascist Italy, this book tells the story of Giovanna, a young and somewhat naive, headstrong girl. Through her brother Giorgio, she gets involved in helping out the resistance fighters, as well as helps out in a secret clinic for wounded soldiers. Giovanna ends up meeting the love of her life, Mario, when she helps out 2 of her brother's fellow resistance fighter friends. Mario is Jewish and Giovanna must help hide him from the Nazi's who have invaded her...more
The writing was good but the story had some problems. Or is this supposed to be a young adult book? It seemed "light" for a war era story. Giovanna was so self centered and childish. Nazi have taken over her home and she is flirting with an officer. Really? Also, it seemed like the family didn't have as many hardships during the war as most of Europe endured. The mom still had a beautiful garden and spends her time wandering among the flowers. They celebrated birthdays with big dinners and cake....more
This is a stunningly good book. Set in Tuscany in 1944 the Germans became an occupying government due to a separate peace signed by the Italians. The main character is a is 17 year old girl, Giovanna, from an aristocratic family. She asked to care for a Jewish soldier who is badly hurt, and with a similar background as her own. They are both from ancient and noble Italian families. The two fall in love and this is where our story really begins, with World War II blazing around. I enjoyed the wri...more
At first I was pleased with the book. It was overall okay. I would've given it a four star at first. Then as the book progressed it was a three. I never read the last chapter. To my disappointment she had to include two bad words. This made the book only a 2 star. The words were entirely unnecessary. I am disappointed overall with the book. This book had potential but unfortunately the author Margaret was unable to capture this story without adding junk. I am extremely displeased and would not e...more
I was so disappointed in this book. It is as if the book was built backwards, that the author knew how she wanted it to end and wrote from that point. I found her characters hard to like and uninspiring. The first 3/4 of the book had no tension at all and I found this tough going. I felt that some parts were a stretch to believe, for instance, Giovanna goes from a scared infatuated girl to one who leaps at Mario and says "I want to feel you inside me" - really? A bit of a stretch, yes?

I won The Golden Hour by Margaret Wurtele through a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway. As many 17 year olds, Giovanna makes a few bad decisions. Overall she is doing the best she can. Even when she knows what she is doing probably isn’t he best idea, like meeting the German Officer, she thinks it will work out. She shows bravery when she decides to help her brothers and the other soldiers fighting with the Allies. If the German soldiers find out, Giovanna will be taken away to a concentration camp...more
The plight of the Jews has long been a subject of non-fiction and fiction to writers. Just when readers think they have read all there is to the "history, adventure, and romance" of this time, another author writes an unforgettable story about Nazism from an Italian perspective. In her first novel, Margaret Wurtele brings characters to life in the midst of major issues such as tumultuous political times, war, faith, and heroism. With a writer's heart, Wurtele brings the story to a personal vista...more

If the reader looks at this story as a simple romance set against the backdrop of war, The Golden Hour by Margaret Wurtele is well-written and beautiful. Our heroine, Giovanna, is a 17 year old Catholic girl living in the countryside of Italy during 1943. As she begins to mature, she takes on more and more anti-war and specifically anti-Nazi activities.

Giovanna is called to her parents home, Villa Farfella, as her father is dying. She sits with him and then goes to lie down in her childhood room and is brought back to history 50 years ago.
We are brought back to Italy during World War II and the uncertainty that war can bring. Giovanna's brother, Giorgio, has decided that he is going to work with the partisans, who are aiding the Allies in fighting the takeover of Italy from the Germans.

I don't often read books about WWII and the horrors of the Nazis (I have terrible nightmares afterwards), but I made an exception by reading this book and I'm glad I did. It's the story of Nazi occupation in Italy and a young woman who is reckless, confused and then heroic in her efforts to make her own difference, especially when her views differ so much from those of her parents. Lots of beautiful moments of clarity in these pages and no regrets from me.
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads. It sat on my shelf for awhile as I had so many books already piled up to read, but I am so glad I finally got a chance to read it.
I love to read novels set in this time period (World War II) but the setting of Italy was a new one for me. I'll admit that at first I had a little trouble getting into the story but I believe that was mostly because I wasnt familiar with the setting. I really enjoyed Giovanna's tale, though it was bittersweet. Set in German-occupied Italy, it shows how she goes from being a naive, somewhat disconnected young woman to one fully aware and heavily invested in what's going on around her. It's interesting how some of the smallest decisions, words spoken, and being in a certain place at a certain time shaped the events in Giovanna's life. Plus, I was glad to read a WW2 story set in Italy, as I'd not before.
The main character, Giovanna Bellini, is so shallow and self-absorbed, I could not finish this book. She imagines herself to be a champion of the cause of the partisans in World War II, but is so immature and silly, that it's hard to take her seriously. She would fit in well with today's "Valley Girls". Not a book I would recommend.
So many books written about the Nazi movement and the World War. This story takes place in Italy. A young Italian woman befriends a Nazi soldier. Her brother is involved with the partisan forces working to impede the German occupation in Italy and the rest of Europe. Very good story telling with a lot of historical research included.
I won this book in a first reads giveaway and ended up in my top 10 favorite books that I have read this year. This book takes place in italy during world war II. The main character is a young girl who starts out making poor decisions and ends up being a hero. This is a perfect coming of age story that I would reccommend to everyone. Loved it!
