To borrow a phrase from Ceridwen, I'd like to punch this book in the nose. Don't get me wrong; Mark Twain's novel is engagingly written and probably a timeless classic for its rich depictions of rural life in the antebellum South; it's just that the "lovable rascal" schtick doesn't work for me. It isn't really the book I have an issue with; it's Tom Sawyer himself I'd like to punch. My all-time favorite work of fiction. I usually read this every summer.
As a fourth grader I read this book and took it very seriously. It was my dream to build a raft and go adventuring. Actually I did build the raft, but there was not enough water in the creek.
My other great ambition was to come marching into my own funeral. I still think that would be fun.

There's not much that can be said about this book by a hack like me that would do it justice. Mark Twain was the first American writer to figure out how to turn the American vernacular into art, and he was the first historian to document how we talked. I am currently reading this to my boys. I am not enjoying it at all. I think my 8 year old likes it though. I was really expecting to be more excited about this one. =( I wish I could get it to it.

Little-known fact: I played an extra in the musical and got to choose my own name. I picked "Tony" but was told I had to change it because "the Italians hadn't arrived yet." So I changed it to "Anthony" and they accepted that. I guess what they meant is that the Italians hadn't started using nick-names yet.

Like Huckleberry Finn, I read it a long time ago and I don't remember much besides that I liked it and it was a really good book.
I remember one part, though, because it was my favorite. I remember the part when Tom is white-washing the fence and he gets everybody else to do it for him. I remember that when I read it I wanted to be like him.

What does one say about Tom Sawyer? I purchased both Tom and Huckelberry Finn at one of the greatest used book stores in the states, The Book Barn, in West Chester, PA. Ive always wondered why these books are banned. This is one of the classic American tales, by perhaps our most esteemed writer. Unlike Huckleberry Finn, this book doesn't take on great moral issues, but is a description of the joys of childhood. This book was a great one but I can't say it is one of the best ones I have ever read. It was a mix of comedy, action, romance, epic fails, treachery and more. Tom Sawyer, the main character, dives into many small tales with his two friends, Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper, and live the life of a boy. This story is about an adventurous young boy who likes to get in to all kinds of mischief with his friends. One day he could be tricking all the neighborhood kids into doing his chores the next day attending his own funeral and maybe even finding treasure with his best friend Huck Finn. Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, is an interesting book. Tom is an adventurous boy. He went on many adventures and did many crazy things, such as watching a killing, faking his own death, becoming a pirate, searching for treasure, and getting lost in caves. First of all: the cover of the 2008 Puffin edition of Tom Sawyer is fricking awful. I t turns the white washing incident-which is the finest example of Tom's business savvy and cunning, not to mention the best moment of the childhood construction and values of young boys in St. Petersburg in the entire book-into some innocent, mundane piece of idealistic childhood crap. The cover is utter crap, do you hear me? CRAP!

Mark Twain has basically bottled the essence of what it's like to be a little boy.
The best part is having the narrator's adult voice add lots of importance to really silly or inconsequential things, like Tom getting in trouble in Sunday school or him swindling his friends as they trade the bugs and other stuff in their pockets.
