Brightly hued, highly finished, and relatively large in scale, pastels in the 18th century were regarded as a type of painting and displayed like oils. The powdery, vibrant crayons are particularly suited to capturing the skin tones and evanescent expressions that characterize the most lifelike portraits.

Not only does this publication in conjunction with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art provide a strong overview of the pastel as a medium, and the artistic culture associated with them, but it provides nice snapshot biographies of a number of the leading artists of 18th century France and England. The reproductions of the artworks are wonderful.
The reprints in this book are quite nice but honestly do not do the portraits justice to how luminous and beautiful they looked in person. Nice book explaining the history and technical aspects of pastel portraiture in the 18th century. Enjoyed the write-ups regarding each work and a brief bio of each artist.
Good quality reproductions of the drawings.
