Two middle aged women friends stumble upon a murder investigation in a small South Carolina town in their efforts to find a "fun" hobby for one of them. Maggie and Cher are as different as two female buddies can be, yet best of friends. In their pursuit of collecting local rocks, they accidentally witness a murder. As the clues mount, it turns out that Cher has a tie to one of the suspects and both women go into overdrive to gather evidence to exonerate the young man.

This is a fun novel to read! I don't find myself laughing on top of my lungs, but I more or less chuckle throughout the whole story. The narrative angle is from Maggie and Cher's point of view and the humor evolves around the fact that these two women are just about to pass their prime. Almost.. At the same time they want to do something with their life, to have a purpose, and this characterize the whole story. Incontinence, tendencies of a nervous breakdown and murder investigation is mixed wit...more

Maggie and Cher are not the most likely of friends, but they make for an entertaining story together. They lead a fairly normal lifestyle, they may even consider their lives boring, but with this latest mystery, they now have an exciting new find to consider. The two decide to try to figure out the mystery, much to the readers' enjoyment. Their dialogue will keep the reader entertained as he/she navigates this novel.

Maggie and Cher are not perfect middle-aged women by any standards. They have their own weaknesses and are trying to overcome life's little crises and troubles. In short, the average middle-aged neighbour we may come across in any culture around the world. What sets them apart is their ability to have fun in spite of everything. And I should repeat that - in spite of everything! Their banter and smart replies to each other and the people around them, make life so much more livable for them and t...more
This book is going to have you laughing your ass off. However, sadly, my ass is still as big as ever, so don't count on it as a diet aid.
(Here is a small excerpt from the book)
Ted strolled into the kitchen in a t-shirt and pajama bottoms, looking way too chipper for present company. He snagged a muffin and poured a cup of coffee. "What are you girls up to today, and should I notify the authorities?"

WARNING: Do not read this book while eating. To do so may cause you to choke to death on your own laughter.
I'll start by paying new author Karla Telega the highest form of compliment I can give: in many ways, her writing reminds me of that of bestselling author Janet Evanovich. Another reviewer has compared Maggie and Cher to Thelma and Louise, and I can see that...but to me, they're more like Stephanie Plum and Lula for the AARP crowd.

"I imagine that you and Cher can come up with something that will test the bounds of the legal system."
A remark early on from a therapist, and it entirely fits the events in Box of Rocks. The novel is the first by writer Karla Telega, and combines mystery, comedy, secrets, and the bond of friendship into a good narrative. At its heart are Maggie Gorski and Cher Anderson, two South Carolina friends in their fifties. Maggie is happily married to Ted, while Cher is a single woman after her first an...more

Like a great chef, Karla Telega in her humorous mystery, Box of Rocks, has baked an amazing story filled with lavish ingredients for a unique dish. Every flavor of human emotion runs through this story like trust, loyalty, love, sadness, laughter, greed, jealousy, anger, revenge, competitiveness and so forth. Karla brings her characters vibrantly alive with refreshing dialogue. She demonstrates her dexterous skill at crafting a mystery with clues in the right places.

“Where she was admittedly a little self absorbed he was generous. Where she was an emotional box of rocks ,he was stable.”

"I'm planning to starch all your shorts before lunchtime," Maggie grumbled, adding, "Bwa-ha-ha!"
"I think that was specifically addressed in our marriage vows."
Cher looked over the list they had made. "Our first hobby is paranormal investigations", she mused. "Does that mean we have to stay up all night staking out some graveyard?"
Maggie grunted and propped her head up with one hand. She turned a bleary gaze up to Ted. "If we don't come out alive, there's a pot pie in the freezer.”
