Edited for content: Three short stories that give us a glimpse into the start of the main characters' relationship. To be continued in Moonlight Becomes You, coming out later this month.

Sweet, tender and full of the insecurities and angst typical to young men, these short stories are a perfect prequel to the main course. Can't wait!

Although these are a prequel to Moonlight Becomes You, I'm not sure they work that well without having read that book. They probably should have been flashbacks. Basically there are four stories but only three of them are here and the fourth one, the most important, is missing because it's in the novel. So, since I didn't realize that, I was a little disconcerted to go from a story where a guy is in love with his best friend with absolutely no resolution to a story where they two are together. I'm glad I went back and read this. It was great to hear Jesse's POV on their early days together. It gave us a better feel of just how in love he and Shane really were. But it also made what Shane did to him so much worse (stupid bastard indeed). Clearly Jesse had insecurities about his looks and for him to get kicked out of their band for that very reason had to be devastating, even if it wasn't Shane's idea. The three stories are acting as some sort of prequel to Moonlight Becomes You. I must say that after reading this and then see the blurb of Moonlight Becomes You, I'm very intrigued.

Why?

Because this book is about Shane and Jesse, and the blurb of the later is about Shane and Kayden. Way to go to make me wonder what happens in those ten years apart!! I'm sure there will be a twist there that I can't wait to uncover.

These three short stories that give the background and details of the relationship for Shane and Jesse and the band were very sweet and tender. It felt like that moment where sunshine peeks out of the clouds before the storm hits because I knew what was to come after these vignettes.

More Than Moonlight, three short, sweet snippets, introduces the reader to the band Luck and (what I assume to be) the main characters of the Lucky Moon series.

I loved the set up and was hooked right from the beginning. I may or may not have sighed a little when, in the second story, Shane and Jesse were actually together. Jesse was just too sweet for words, and I really loved the hints of insecurities he couldn't hide and the fact how reassuring and loving Shane reacted to them.

Billed as the prequel to Moonlight Becomes You, More than Moonlight instead reads as a bunch of outtakes from Jesse’s perspective of Jesse and Shane’s early relationship before Luck got their break, which in turn broke Shane and Jesse up. His character is already laboring under the burden of having to redeem...more Billed as the prequel to Moonlight Becomes You, More than Moonlight instead reads as a bunch of outtakes from Jesse’s perspective of Jesse and Shane’s early relationship before Luck got their break, which in turn broke Shane and Jesse up. Taken separately from the other work, these aren't bad shorts. Unfortunately, I think Vaughn and O’Shea were right to delete these scenes from MBY, as they really don’t do Shane any favors. His character is already laboring under the burden of having to redeem himself as a romantic hero, having betrayed Jesse in the past gives Shane something to strive for, and also gives his character development a great trajectory. But these scenes just make it more obvious how badly Shane fucked up when he picked the record deal over Jesse.

MBY gives us only Shane’s perspective on the early years, and it’s colored by his current ennui with the rockstar lifestyle and regret that he left Jesse behind, which make their explosive collision in the present more powerful. He knows he fucked up, and wishes he could change it. But at the end of it all, Shane is ultimately redeemable, he can grovel enough that the reader will want Jesse/Kayden to take him back (and Jesse/Kayden’s own fuckup of a mindgame with Shane means that Shane has been wronged too, and therefore has to grovel less).

MTM gives the reader the immediacy of knowing just how much Shane actually cares about Jesse and how much Jesse cares for him in turn. By the end of the third snippet, there was no way to redeem Shane from fucking Jesse over like that. There needed to be some other reason for him to abandon his best friend and true love for a record deal. If it was contingent on getting him out of the situation with his dad, or maybe he and Jesse were having problems, I could have understood it better. There needed to be something else to push him over that edge from the solid foundation that MTM leaves them with.

I also found it disturbing that Shane’s words in these scenes to Jesse highlight that Jesse’s insecurity about his appearance is only in his head, and that once he learns to trust himself, and maybe get a better haircut/clothes/exercise regimen, he really will blossom into the swan we know he is inside. Shane adores Jesse the way he is, and he is starting to convince Jesse that Jesse really is beautiful in Shane’s eyes. And if Shane can see his beauty, then it does actually exist in his person and would not require something as drastic as surgery to have come out. This only makes it that much more horrible that Shane actually broke their relationship over the record label’s concerns about Jesse’s appearance. And then to have Jesse in MBY have to resort to surgery to transform himself makes my stomach hurt. The terrible lesson that beauty is dependent on physical conformity at any cost to a certain standard is only reinforced by these vignettes because the disconnect is that much stronger. (less)

Short yes, but sweeter than candy! I loved this collection of vignettes about Shane and Jesse. You know how sometimes in the movies, the prequel follows a major movie hit? In my humble opinion, that’s how this prequel should be approached. I happened to read it after the main novel, and I’m glad I did or I think I would have had questions and a major bias as I started reading “Moonlight Becomes You”. I think this actually helped answer more questions than raise them.

How lovely these three short stories are! They tell of the growing relationship between Shane and Jesse as their band becomes well known.

Shane is self-confident and aware of what he wants. Jesse is so sweet, but lacks the confidence to know he is desirable - I dread to think of what may happen in the up-coming Moonlight Becomes You.

I'm sure these little back-stories will stay with me when I read the full book :)

In First Night, Luck is having their first ever performance, playing cover songs for a high school dance. Lead singer Jesse Seider is incredibly nervous and on the verge of throwing up, but his best friend Shane Ventura helps him to calm down. Joined by Shane's brother Nick and drummer Dre, the band has a successful first show. We learn that Shane and Jesse have known each other about eight months, ever since Jesse helped tutor Shane in school. And we definitely get the feeling that Jesse has feelings for Shane, but he can't quite let himself believe anything could happen between them. This story gives us a nice introduction to the band and its members. It is sweet to see the guys just starting out and looking toward a bright future.

Me Too jumps ahead about a year and a half. It is a few weeks after Shane and Jesse have kissed for the first time and Jesse is still very insecure about himself and the relationship. Shane is gorgeous and more experienced and Jesse is self-conscious about his body, wondering what Shane sees in him. When Jesse finally gets up the nerve to initiate some kissing with Shane, things get more physical, but the guys are still taking it very slow. Yet the emotional connection between them has grown very strong, and although they are not quite ready to admit it, they are falling in love.

For Real begins not long after the previous story. The guys are dating, although they have not yet told the rest of the band. When Jesse comes over to Shane's house after Shane has some problems at home, comfort begins to turn to passion. Jesse is still incredibly insecure about his appearance and wary of even removing his shirt in front of Shane, especially because Shane is so attractive. Shane reassures Jesse how much he cares for him and how attractive he finds him. The guys take things further than ever before, both physically as well as emotionally, talking about being together forever.

This was my first introduction to this series as I haven't read Moonlight Becomes You. It appears to take place well before the events of that book, giving you a taste of where it all began for the band. I really loved these stories of young love and found them incredibly sweet and romantic. I love the contrast between the more confident Shane and the nervous Jesse (and you know how I love my virgin heroes!). I also appreciated how Shane sees beyond Jesse's somewhat geeky exterior and how much of an effort he makes to be sure Jesse knows how much he cares for him and how attractive Jesse is to him.

I really enjoyed these short stories and they have made me all the more anxious to get my hands on Moonlight Becomes You, as well as the soon-to-be published sequel. Great stories and a great introduction to the band and the guys. (less)

This prequel to Moonlight Becomes You is a collection of short stories that show the beginning of Shane and Jesse's relationship. I liked stories and instantly liked Shane and Jesse. Also - I'm a sucker for m/m musician stories. The short length of the stories was a bit frustrating. I really wanted to see what came next. I was glad there was a full length novel available. I definitely recommend reading this collection of stories before reading the novel Moonlight Becomes You.

I enjoyed these little shorts. Although, they are more like little snippets than short stories. Either way, both MCs were adorable and I heard reading this will help connect with the characters in the sequel, Moonlight Becomes You.

I loved this. It was an endearingly brilliant best friends to lovers short, comprised of three very short snippets into Jesse and Shane's relationship.

I'm a little scared though, Jesse is so sweet, I loved his character and the sequel to this is suppose to be about Kayden and Shane. All I can hope is that Kayden is actually Jesse, otherwise I'll probably hate it, because Jesse is fabulous and Shane is his. Back off Kayden!

Absolutely loved it. I don't read short stories very often. I'm completely committed to novels and I never found short stories satisfying. For a short story to get five stars from me, it has to be mindblowingly exceptional. And More Than Moonlight has managed to accomplish the almost impossible.

Although I think the scenes were well written and really pulled me in, I am not a fan of short reads. I want more. To me these excerpts felt like love/sex scenes written to get a feel for the "back story" of a character written later on. It is just that- a scene. No connection, no development into an entire story. So for me, it was a tease. I am not always positive when it comes to reviewing "a tease". I DO want to read Moonlight Becomes You, so we shall see how I feel about that on...more

It was basically four short scenes in the life of Shane and Jesse that show a poignant love between two friends in a band. I read the description to Moonlight Becomes You and I am very curious how things will pan out. Looking forward to reading it.

Cute little set up to Moonlight Becomes You. Although this is Book 0.5, I almost wish I had read this after reading #1. I ended up figuring certain things out in #1 because of that but it didn't detract from this. Sweet story and I am very much looking forward to the release of #1.5 and #2.

I was looking for something to soothe the soul and this was perfect for that. It is wonderful to read about the tentative steps of first love and those feelings associated with it. This was such a sweet, gentle read. Can't wait to read the novel associated with this couple.
