I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who has ever had a dog. With each page, I laughed about how simply Shannon has captured both the joys and frustrations of owning a dog. The two page spread where the owner tries to get Fergus to come inside, going from polite calling to shouting desperation to pathetic begging all while Fergus innocently smells a tree, shows that Shannon knows the life of a dog owner. But, my favorite part of the book is a colorful four panel progression showin...more

Shannon uses much of the same pictures types of that used in the "David" books. The illustrations are very child-like and appear to be draw by a child. The dog is the only white thing on most pages and stands out against the dark backgrounds. The text is written like a lot of his other books. Rather than being in straight lines, it is written much like a kindergarten child would write, all over the place. It's not typed like a chapter book, rather it is written like actual...more

Wow...I just read some of the reviews giving this book 1, 2 and 3 stars. I really don't understand this and some of the justifications are interesting. It's true that there isn't much story in here but the illustrations tell the story. There are many things for children to look for and to discuss with their guardians.

As one of my family's favorite children's book, I looked forward to reading this one at a story time but wondered if it would go over as well with an audience. It did! All the kids fell in love with Fergus, a happy-go-lucky West Highland terrier, who is the star of this book. As Fergus progresses through his day the refrain "Good boy, Fergus!" is repeated over and over again...in spite of the fact that Fergus rarely ever minds. The illustrations are bright and big and filled with humor and the t...more
Hilariously funny! Anyone who has ever owned a dog will love this and be able to relate to Fergie's owner. The story follows Fergus through a typical day and it's definitely laugh out loud funny. It had me cracking up all the way through! My dog is very similar both in attitude and looks so I found it especially amusing. The part where he's trying to get Fergus to come into the house and when Fergus is begging at the dinner table are two things my dog and I go through together everyday!

Shannon’s vibrant illustrations depict boisterous scenes of a frisky puppy’s continuous antics. Fergus’ owner hilariously accepts behavior that is not-so-perfect (i.e., chasing felines and begging for meatballs) from this likeable, ornery pooch. Children will be drawn to the abundant colorful illustrations which fill every page and varying type styles. Repetition and the predictable format of the text allow beginning readers a chance to tell this charming story themselves.

Good Boy, Fergus is an early read children's picture book. It especially hit home for me as I had a west highland white terrier through my entire childhood, that would do stuff in the excact same manner as Fergus - leading me to believe that David Shannon actually had this dog and was portraying his/her demeanor through this children's book. Unlike his other picture books however, this one has more words that are generally scattered - which can make them a bit difficult to read. Regardless, this...more
David Shannon's illustrations are always enjoyable! I loved this book about a not-so-obedient, but quite lovable dog, Fergus. The text in this book was perfect, as it is just what any dog lover would say. I haven't read this with my class, but I can imagine that they'd love this book, as so many could connect with it. I love the variety of ways the pages are illustrated. SOme are full-page illustrations, there are panels of multiple illustrations, and there are pages to the effect of a "before a...more
The cover made this book look like it has such promise to use in storytime. But, not really. There isn't much of a story to engage the preschoolers, and not much you can do with the few words to help out toddlers. It's really more of a book for those with pets--particularly a dog. And now that I have lived in a home with TWO dogs for over a year, I can certainly see the humor in the owner's frustration, pride, etc. It is a hard thing to fathom dog owners, but I've enjoyed all the laughs I've got...more
I am not an animal lover. This books depicts the life of a house dog. It gave me an insight on how dogs act. I am sure many children who have pets could relate. Fergus is this white cuddly dog. The pictures are huge and colorful. Fergus owner directs him in so many ways. Stop Fergus, Come her Fergus, Don't do that Fergus and Good boy Fergus. Fergus does answer back in his actions. He doesnt eat his food until the owner puts whip cream on it. The illustration draws different stages of the food. H...more
I understand that children like David Shannon books. But I just don't like them. A few years ago, my nephew pulled this book of the shelf at the library and fell in love with it. We had to read it over and over again. This did not make me like the book anymore than I had the first time I read it. There is just something about these books that bothers me. I think it's a combination of the style of illustration and the way the text is words the reader is addressing to Fergus. Honestly, I don't kno...more

The text in this book is very large and is placed in and around the illustrations in random order. The text is very simple and repetitive. The illustrations seem to be sketches that have been colored with oil paint. The palette used for the illustrations is varies and is bright and inviting. This book appeals to young readers because it is easy to read and is based on a fun dog.

Good Boy Fergus is a story about a dog. This dog can't seem to do anything right. He chases after cats, he can't stay still, he begs for food, and he can't do the proper tricks he needs to do when commanded to do so. The owner however says "good boy Fergus" after each sequence of events unfold. I love this story mostly because it reminds me of my two dogs Izzy and Lady. They have the same mentality as the dog in the story, but it doesn't make me love them any less.
This is one of my favorite books because one, I am a sucker for any dog book and this particular dog reminds me of my own. I can relate to the training process and the love between a dog and its owner. The illustrations are bright and allow for great conversation while reading. He makes you feel as though you are there with the dog. This book is great for making predictions based on pictures lesson in 1st grade.

Shannon's book Good Boy, Fergus! has wonderful illustrations. The illustrations are large, bright, bold and fill the page. The text in this book is like a bubble font and is very large. I particularly like the red wordings, I believe this represents anger. Children will like this book because they once again could relate to it. A puppy usually does the opposite of what you tell it to!

I'm not too sure how I felt about this book. I felt like it went sort of all over the place. It was a little crazy to read especially with the font and the blown-up/up close pictures. However, I do think it would be a lot of fun for young kids especially if you read with the right expressions and tones. Also good for teaching expressions!
I did not enjoy this book. I got because the words are large so thought would be good for a teaching my toddler. The some words though are not for a child's vocabulary. It didn't really have much of a story line to follow either. The dog was an untrained pest.
This is good I you would lime to make your own story from the pictures.

This book has some great pictures, but I'm not really to impressed with the story. Throughout the whole story the dog misbehaves and does not listen and gets rewarded for it. Maybe I'm reading to much into it but I don't think reinforcing bad behaviour is funny, whether it involves dogs or children. Maybe it's just me!
This story goes through a day in the life of the family dog. Very young kids won't get most of the humor, such as Fergus being called good even when he does all the tricks wrong. But still fun pictures and great prose to read with lots of inflection. Fits in nicely with the David books. I think Natalie asked for it a couple times because the art looks the same, but since she has limited experience with dogs, she wasn't as interested.
A book with very little words about the silly dog, Fergus. Story is based off of David Shannon's dog at home. This would be perfect for about Kindergarten age because of the few words on each page, and lots of pictures.
Every dog owner that world over, will identify with this account of the lovable schnauzer, Fergus. Fergus is a happy-go-lucky pooch who loves tickles, walks, dog food with whipped cream and leaving ‘presents’ on every landmark possible, i.e, fire hydrants, mailboxes, and car tires. The brightly colored, larger-than-life illustrations tell a story all by themselves. Not just a book for kids, but one in which a dog owner will relate to, as Fergus employs the same fun-loving, sweet antics that all...more
