On a sweltering day in August, a small town drunkenly celebrates its six-hundredth anniversary with a funfair when an anonymous tip leads police to find a young woman brutally beaten, raped, and thrown under the floorboards of the very stage on which her attackers had just played a polka. An eight-member brass band composed of respectable family men with respectable day jo ...more

A collection of fifteen short stories by a Berlin criminal defense lawyer who sees the bizarre, the unusual, the hopeless and the hapless of modern society. The stories are set in Berlin, translated from the German, but the stories could be anywhere in the modern urban world.

description

In one story a woman kills her husband who has been so abusive that the charges are dismissed. A man solicits other men to have sex with his wife in hotel rooms and suddenly he turns on one and kills him. A young couple wit

Nestes contos aconteceu-me isso várias vezes. Nenhum me deixou indiferente.

If Columbo had been a severe German criminal defense lawyer, he might have written a book like this. Guilt is the successor to Ferdinand von Schirach's brilliant Crime . Each book contains a collection of true crime (or "true defense") stories. His stories are about his clients, although how much is fiction and how much is fact is hard to tell. Guilt isn't as extraordinary as Crime, but it's still a compelling read. Both books circle around the ambiguous notion of guilt. Some of his characters a ...more

You know how sometimes the only thing that will hit the spot is an episode or twelve of Law & Order? Well, these stories by a lawyer and best-selling author in Germany satisfy in a similar way. They start with a crime based on an actual case and then look at the way in which the courts are used to serve or hinder justice. The no-frills writing creates an eerie, deadpan atmosphere and the exploration of the legal system makes you ponder whether the Law has any real morality. And for an added ...more

Uff, dat’s man barschen Tobak!

I almost stopped reading this book partway through the first story. Von Schirach's subject matter is unremittingly dark; these stories include rape, abuse, violence senseless and sadistic, and palpable despair. I was kept reading not only by the breathtaking precision of von Schirach's evocative prose, but, more importantly, by the steadiness of his compassion. As an author, he shows a keen eye for moments of beauty--even grace--in apparently hopeless situations. The ability of the law to enact ...more

Collection of short stories set in Germany featuring a defense attorney who records his observations of his clients and their crimes and motivations. The writing was rather spare though very realistic. Not quite as good as the previous collection Crime but still well worth reading.

Klare Leseempf ...more

From The New York Times Book Review By ADAM LIPTAK Published: April 6, 2012

Ferdinand von Schirach is both a German criminal defense lawyer and an exceptional prose stylist, as evidenced by his devastating new volume of stories, a sequel to a similar and even stronger collection called “Crime.” That book was a critical and commercial success in Germany and received fine notices when it was published here last year.
There’s a trick to many of von Schirach’s stories, one that works every time. A n

“Crime” and “Guilt” by Ferdinand von Schirach
These are two books, both by a German barrister relating fictionalised versions of cases he has been involved with over a long career. There are excerpts of lives, more longitudinal takes, snippets and short stories. They are beautifully written and I assume translated, though I have a Rumanian friend who reads things in German and says they are usually much more magical in a language that is poetic on paper if not to the ears. If so reading this in G

Published in English together with "Verbrechen" as "Crime and Guilt"

A short book of dark stories centered around the German justice system written by a defense attorney, supposedly a mix of fact and fiction. Written in a sparse, non-judgmental, highly controlled style, he lists the facts of each case, and then towards the end the narrator appears as the lawyer who tries to sort out the case as much as possible.

Since this isn't TV crime many cases are never "solved" or really finished - for exam

Just as I am traveling around Germany, I read in sequence these 2 criminal? novels, written by a German lawyer.

I got to read his first short story collection "Verbrechen (Crime and Guilt)" at one of my book clubs. I fell for his concise story telling style and the humanity thoughts hidden beyond the lines. "Schuld" is his second short story collection and every story is as good as his first book's ones. Either the readers get stunned or feel sad, every story is showing a dark side of the human b
