I have no clue what I was thinking when I started this book but it was nothing like I thought. It surprised me all the way around. I love the way the author didn’t tell all in the blurb like most do now days, so you get some great surprises in the story. Not only do you get one love story between the hero and heroine but you get an extra surprise with the hero’s brothers love affair.

I was drawn to this book first and foremost by the idea of a strong female main character and add she's a pirate, I just couldn't resist. Aeron is a beautiful red head that not only can get any man she wants (and frequently does) but is one of the most elusive pirates of her time. She has a crew loyal to a fault, a ship like no other, and a hidden, private island to plan out her pirate-ly ways. Somewhere along the way, she has gotten on the Queen of England's bad side which has made her the most sought after pirate for capture. The Queen has hired the most skilled pirate hunter, Orrin and his crew to bring the wily red head back to face her fate. What no one counts on is the intense attraction between Aeron and Orrin. And what an attraction it is! Unraveling the past of these two characters that carved them into the people they have become is chilling and surprising. I can honestly say I didn't see the real reason behind the Queen's hatred coming.

Patricia Leever's writing style has as much passion as her two characters. This story is a lot of romance; building on the relationship between Aeron and Orrin, their very intense private moments, and realizing not all is as it seems on this island. Orrin's brother Kale and his crew play a large role in this story, as well as getting to know the people on the island that have willingly followed Aeron for years. There is a fighting scene toward the end, when the conflict comes to a head, but if you want an all pirate on the sea type story, you won't find it here. This is a character driven love story more than an action oriented pirate fight. Love rules the day with this story set upon the tragic past that has brought these two together. Finding peace, love, and the ability to move on in the face of horrific past hurts is at the heart of Cat O' Nine Tails.

Overall I recommend this book to romance fans that like a lot of lovin' in their reading. You won't be disappointed in the things these two characters learn about each other and do to each other. Aeron and Orrin seriously have a thing for waterfalls…and bathing…and beaches…and ship cabins. Very saucy indeed.

Cat O'Nine Tails was a fun story in that Aeron is a pretty awesome pirate. She is a tough, dangerous, take-care-of-herself heroine who pirates as a means to provide for herself and her community. She is a leader with compassion, she knows what she wants and she goes after it. As for Orrin, he is a pretty good hero himself, he is able to recognize Aeron's authority and he doesn't look down at her for being female. The problem I had with their relationship was the immediacy of it. Both Aeron and Orrin were instantly attracted, and that made it a little hard to believe at times, their romance was almost too easy. When Orrin's brother enters the picture and discovers an instant attraction of his own, it's instant attraction overload. With that said, the romances are sweet, sexy, and all-around fun to read.

This book is not just a pirate romance story, there is depth to the book as well. Aeron's past is dark, she was subjected to harsh abuse as a young woman, and in order to achieve happiness with Orrin, she must face her demons. I have to issue a warning here, there is mention of rape and violence towards women throughout the book, so if you are sensitive to that, be aware. There is not too much detail to these mentions, and it is not a focus of the story. The violence shaped the characters and the story, giving depth to the romance novel.

I have to say that Cat O'Nine Tails is quite a good debut novel for Patricia Leever. With engaging characters, well-balanced story line, and plenty of excitement Cat O'Nine Tails is a good read. Readers, if you enjoy historical romances with pirates, I do recommend giving this book a try.(less)

Thus began my journey through the hungry eyes of Aeron and Orrin. (Yup, I’ll gladly admit I had some trouble separating them at first, because of their names…) Now, I’m all for sexual tension, don’t get me wrong, but Aeron and Orrin weren’t the only ones who felt relieved once that tension was eased. Because besides some minor world building (serving more as a drop-dead gorgeous background for the sexy fantasies lived out in this novel) the first 50 pages were oozing with cravings from Aeron for Orrin, and the other way around. Old-fashioned ‘Candlelight’ romance novels is probably what ‘Cat O’ Nine Tails’ compares to best. LOTS of lovin’, little plot. A feel-good book of which you already know the ending, then still end up with a big smile on your face because of said ending.

Once Aerons secret connection to Queen Winifred was revealed I had a hard time believing all of it. However, when Aeron was faced with the Queen, the way she froze and went completely catatonic was understandable and heart wrenching. So yes, Patricia Leever knows how to write, how to convey feelings.

Perspectives in this novel change from Aeron to Orrin, to William, to Kale, to Maura even. It’s written in a pleasant, fluent prose, suiting the era. The island, castle, ships and fight scenes are very well envisioned, despite the lack of descriptiveness.

Aeron is a pretty believable character, as far as female Pirate Captains are believable. She’s kick-ass, but too flawless at times and Out of Character in NOT taking the upper-hand when it comes to love-making, no matter how feministic she is supposed to be. It took me some time, but then Aeron really grew on me, especially when she showed her vulnerable side. I sympathized with her a lot.
I had some trouble with Orrins feelings/thoughts sometimes, he came off just a teensy bit too perfect. He seems a bit too much like the men one usually only encounters in fantasies and books, never in the real world. Yes, he’s dreamy, but he could never be existent. He’s written the way a woman thinks a fantasy guy should be, not the way a real man is.

Honestly, the romantic moments were too sweet (and frequent) for my taste, but if that’s your sort of thing you cannot go wrong with this book! Don’t expect too much action (except between the sheets) and anticipate a slowly paced plot. This book is about romance and location, about lovers finding each other.

You will be left with the exact feeling the blurb promises you: An escape to a place where love is the strongest bond people can share against a mutual enemy. Easy peasy if you ask me, when they’re both gorgeous and inhabit a dreamy fantasy island… ;)

Now, I’ve read a few pirate bodice rippers in my time but what I found engaging about this one was the fact that Patricia turns the conventions on their head. This time it’s a woman calling the shots (or should that be splicing the mainbrace?), and the langage is appropriate for the time period without being overly formal, so it still makes for an easy read. I can honestly only give about 2 stars, for it was not more than okay, mostly.

I missed a lot during this ebook. First of all, the idea of the plot was great, but not so much how it was put down. Things developed too fast, and that took away the reality-part of it. I really wasn't sure what I was going to get with this book, or whether I should even accept a copy; I had been in this crazy-busy mode and probably shouldn't have been accepting anything, on top of which I normally shy away from lesser known, wildcard publishers. But for whatever reason, something about this grabbed me (pirates! pretty!) and I caved. And though there were certainly times I regretted that, I ended up glad I did.

First of all, I just have to point out that this cover is absolutely phenomenal. It's beautiful and mysterious and made me want to read this debut novel even more. Add to the fact that it was historical fiction with pirates and I was sold.

I thought Ms Leever wrote a very passionate read. The characters, Aeron and Orrin, were a very sexy match and I truly loved reading about them. Her passion for her story and her characters was so dynamic. Definitely recommended for adult reading, this was a great love story with good steamy scenes.

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend this romance story to everyone who loves love!!

I know fiction can be a great source of fantasy and escapism, but this book just wasn't believable to me, and the characters felt flat and very cliche. The romantic leads fall in love almost instantly, despite knowing nothing significant about each other. I love a good historical escape from my every day life, but this story did not provide it.

A very fun Pirate Booty call. Yes, the love scenes were plentiful and enticing, but they were also woven into a very unique plot that had me rooting for the good guys all the way. If you enjoy books with strong heroines with a vulnerable side, this should definitely be on your to-read list. My personal favorite aspect of the book was the beautiful setting and the lovable band of pirates & the life they'd made...and the heat between Orrin and Aeron.
