My kindergarten class did a skit to the song about how Pierre doesn't care and for years I couldn't figure out where the song was from and why it haunted me. I would even sing the one part I knew to people once in a while and no one could tell me more about it. I finally figured it out at the Maurice Sendak exhibit at the Jewish Museum about three years ago. It was like a revelation.

A gem, to be sure with a solid moral. I do so love a moral.

I LOVE Carol King's song about Pierre better than the book. I think it's because I'm not fond of Sendak's artwork.

A reread, I think I chanted "I don't care" quite a lot after reading this as a kid.

Even in a classroom of 4 and 5 year olds (who, by definition, are a bit pie-eyed) it takes a fairly impressive book to prompt ear-splitting hooting, jeering, and a spontaneous burst of applause at "circle time". This book has prompted all-class standing ovations, on multiple occasions. (Granted, the standing ovations were always initiated by the same kid.)
Quite possibly one of the best cautionary tales against acting sullen (or apathetic) ever penned.

This is a great classic packaged with other Sendacks: Chicken Soup being one. Pierre is my personal favorite. This is largely because if you are cursed with a child who is smart enough to have figured out the passive agressive technique of "not caring", then this is the book you need to deal with the situation. Short, to the point, humorful, but with a great gruesome ending, neither frustrated parent, nor misunderstood child could ask for more.

We read this to our darling Jess who told us "I don't care" so many times, we figured she must have been channelling Pierre long before we read the book. Of course, now she is a darling young adult who told me once that her motto was - it's easier to do something and apoligize than ask permission, hear no, and get in trouble after.
Thank goodness she's charming. And no lions have eaten her.

STILL and always will be one of m favorite all time books (and movies). I still have my copy from childhood that I plan to one day share with my own children. I love this author and all of his works!! Brings back lovely childhood memories.

Why does morality go so well with morbidity?
This is a really great one to do aloud with a group of children on the cusp of being snarky... they get their very own line to shout out "I don't care" ... Oh, but you will!

I love how Pierre continually says, "I don't care." This is so typical of little ones. A must for parents of little ones, but then I am a Maurice Sendak fan.

This should be right up there with Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. A hilarious, moralistic, and adorable story about a disobedient little boy named Pierre.
More like 4.5 stars, so enjoyable! Randomly picked this one up at the library and have been enjoying the tiny little volume for two days now.

The best part of reading this book is getting Hazel to say "I don't care" at the appropriate times. A good lesson in why kids should care.

My absolute favorite story from childhood- my father would read this to me every night at my begging. It's just wonderful.

I vaguely remember this book... I remember thinking that Pierre was a bit of an ass. I look forward to re-reading it!

I love this book. Its my funny little present to my friends that are feeling apathetic. Hilarious and smart.
Another one that you should at least read once... it might be a little annoying with all the "I don't care" :)

Do you remember this from Saturday morning cartoons when you were younger? I do! I've always thought it was fun.
