Although present off and on for over fifty years, the plague (bubonic plague) attacked London with a vengence in 1665. Well over 100,000 people from the city – over one-quarter of its population – were killed by that disease. The Londoners at the time didn’t know the cause of the disease, blaming it on foreign import or a miasma or any number of potential factors. We know today that the

Good history. Bell reveals through mortuary rolls that there was a lot of fudging of who died of plague. Parish counsels knew it was a disaster if they reported plague so they covered it up. Some repetition by Bell. He makes the point that families being shut up together increased deaths several times. Hard on the royal family. Deservedly so.

Painfully academic. The research is far above what is necessary for informative purposes. The writing is dry; and the chapters long.
