In all honesty, this book probably deserves a better rating (but not more than 2.5) but I'm SO frustrated with Toon right now.
Okay okay, before you yell at me , let me tell you - I adore Paige Toon's books, I really do. Johnny Be Good is one of my all time favorites in the chicklit genre. I started reading One Perfect Summer expecting it to blow me away like Toon's books usually do. I mean, I pre-ordered it and everything! However, as you can see, that did not happen.
The writing's still got th...more
well, i loved the first part, and the last part was ok, but found myself skimming the part in the middle about Lukas, i thought he was a repulsive character who was manipulative and damn right stuck up his own backside! Could Alice really have been so taken by him? i loved her in the first part, but found myself slowly hating her as the book went on, if she loved joe like she said she did right the way through the book then why did she and could she marry Lukas?! and the parents hating her thing...more

Paige Toon has done it again, she has delighted me from front cover to back in her newest book. Our MCs are in college for most of this book. It used to be very had to find books with characters of this age, now there is the growing genre of New Adult and you can now find college age characters in abundance. However, so many of those books aren't really very polished and just seem to me to be drawing readers in with scandalous sex scenes....more

This is my first Paige Toon book and I found it quite interesting. Although, this is why I didn't rate it 2 star. (It's not that horrible to be one, haha) I couldn't stand Lukas' character. I really didn't like him. He seems so..... shady (?). Idk, just not completely honest. He's always pretty rude to Alice and Alice just seems to take it in........um....... hello? GIRL POWER. He seems to just criticize all her friends and she does nothing about it BUT she hangs out with his friends. ANDDDDD AL...more

I must admit I’m a HUGE Paige Toon fan, so I was VERY very excited about reading this. I was at the shop before the doors even opened because I was so keen to get my hands on a copy, in fact I nearly knocked the other novels off the shelf in all my enthusiasm!

I really enjoyed reading this book, at the age of 16 I've only just started reading books like this and after reading the synopsis I decided I would start with one perfect summer. I love the style that Paige toon uses when she's writing as it really let's you into the mind of the characters.
Talking about the characters, at some points I liked Alice, but then at points when she's with Joe, I just sat there thinking that she was desperate! At times she's just so needy, but then when Lukas appears...more

I saw this at the library I work at, and was keen for a light read, but I wasn't wanting a rubbish book like this! I honestly do not know what Paige Toon was thinking this when she published this, what an absolute load of rubbish.
So we meet the main character Alice, dull, fickle, emotional and bloody depressing to read about. Sorry to all the lovers of this book, I've never wanted to slate a book so much before.

18 year old Alice is with her family on vacation in Dorset. Alice is not happy about this until she meets Joe who is the same age and they have an instant connection. It goes from a friendship to a full on romance (they are eachothers firsts!). But Joe's family are violent and in order to protect Alice he tells her she must go home and he moves to London to get away from his family. He promises to come for her once he has sorted his life out. Alice goes to university and never hears from Joe, sh...more
Oh dear. Where to start? maybe don't read on in case I spoil anything, though the back of te4h book manages that quite well.
Well, I liked the start - the young love between Joe and Alice was sweetly drawn though I did think Joe's family background was very overdone. VERY!! I got why they split - but then it all went wrong for me. There were too many WTF moments. over the top parents who hate one son and love the other? With no real explanation? Why didn't the MCs try harder to get in touch with...more

Ever wondered what happened to your first love? As if that isn't intriguing enough!
For the past two months I have been pining for Paige Toons Ones Perfect Summer! Fine! For the past year! :) Happy? I've been pounding easons shelves soaring for One Perfect Summer... I called, emailed, searched! Still with no luck. I was told to wait one more week for it to be released! Now, I waited a year for this novel and there's telling me another week? Really?

I only discovered Paige Toon a few months ago and read Johnny Be Good and Baby be mine within a matter of weeks. Following on from that I made sure I had a few more of her back catalogue to read in the future. Her new release One Perfect Summer was released on the 10th May 2012 and I was looking forward to reading it.

One of my favourite books I've read this year. I can't describe how it made me feel... Maybe some of the themes in this book hit close to home. Young love, summer love, and then the family dramas and anguish. It was pure despair if I ever felt it. It took me back to a place I knew well.
In the beginning, in a world of wrong, Alice was the thing that was right for Joe. When she spotted him, she just knew he was it. They made the most out of what would've been a lonely and miserable summer. They f...more

The book is about Alice. On holiday, she meets a boy called Joe and they fall in love. I felt like the writing in this part of the story didn't put across that 'love' very well, it literally just came across as a teenage fling with some very dark secrets along the way (which actually took me a while to believe).
Alice and Joe lose contact and Alice goes off to Uni still pining for Joe. Slow to read but adds to the effect of the story I guess.

When I'd finished this book, I wondered why I had taken the effort to read the whole thing. The answer to that is probably because of how easy to read it actually was. I have never got through such a long book so quickly. There are a number of reasons why I asked myself this question.
To begin with, it was very predictable. From reading the blurb on the back cover I knew how it would go. That's generally the way with this genre however, and one of the main reasons it was so easy to read.

I wasn't sure on whether to give 'One Perfect Summer' a rating of five stars or not, at first, but after a while of thinking, I've come to the conclusion that it definitely deserves it.
My first impressions were that this book was going to be some romantic, happily-ever-after love story that brewed from a teenage holiday romance. Boy, was I wrong. It could definitely be given that title, but it's more of a heart felt story about two soul mates who never fell out of love and waited a little too lo...more

This author never disappoints me, Alice spends the summer before starting University in Dorset with her parents, she meets Joe and falls in love. But the path of true love never did run smoothly and Joe after an arguement with his parents disappears.
Alice starts her life in Cambridge hoping that Joe will track her down and when it becomes apparent this is not happening she decides life must go on. She takes a part time job doing punting tours of the city and finds herself some very good friends...more

I really liked this book. I was captivated since the first few pages. At first I loved Alice and Jo, and their love for each other. I was some what put out when she did not put more effort into finding him. But after meeting Luke I liked him better. I thought he was perfect and thought they would be good together if only Alice gave more of her self to him. I felt that Alice needed to get over her feelings for Jo and move on more with Luke and stop being so selfish. Yes he was controlling and dem...more
Honestly, it really was too good to be true.
I loved all her other books, and the beginning of this book was no different, a teenage romance, who hasn't had one?!
Then it falls apart, as would be typical in a Paige Toon style-ee book.
But as you've convinced yourself all will be resolved... It doesn't. And then it ends with the little bit at the end which only hints at the ending. And it was not the ending I had hoped for.
I felt like there were too many "if only" and "what ifs".

As soon as I discovered Paige Toon; having 'Chasing Daisy' thrust upon me a few months ago. I have read everything she's ever written and she is one of those authors that doesn't disappoint.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this book. Why? We shouldn't need to ask this question because usually Toon's work is impressive, flowing and easy to read. Her characters are engaging and a bunch of laughs... not so in this book unfortunately. For me, it lacked her usual spark.

I have read all of Paige Toon’s books and loved every one of them. I have been eagerly awaiting the release of One Perfect Summer and when I went into my local bookstore and see it was the last copy so it looks like I wasn’t the only one eager for this book to come out!
This is my favourite cover of Paige Toon’s books, it is quite simplistic and yet still eye-catching and instantly recognisable as one of Paige Toons.

Based on the reviews I'd read I was really looking forward to reading this book, but it left me disappointed. I did enjoy reading it, but only because I was in the mood for some light reading which made no demands on me.
The characters lacked depth and I found myself skimming a lot of the pages because they weren't holding my attention. I think the main problem was that although many of the elements of a good story were present, for me, Paige Toon failed to create the vivid imagery that draws me...more

I really really enjoyed this book, and like intended I completely and utterly fell in love with Joe myself, until he became a little creepy and needy near the end but comparing him to Lukas I was totally swung by him whilst Lukas was a control freak. I found it slightly unrealistic in places and was seriously asking myself "would this ever happen?" Which the answer to is no. Ironically I was all about Matthew, he sounded perfect but was only a minor character, and by the end I was ,ore intereste...more
Ok loved the start Alice and Joe have a lovely connection and the writing used to explore this is fresh and interesting. However Alice's move to university and her life after that summer (with Lukas) is somewhat dull (even with his money!) I was willing the middle half of the book to finish so I could find out about Joe! Alas the finale few chapters arrive and Joe is re-introduced to the story and all becomes good again! The story is heart warming however the middle section of the book needed mo...more
For anyone thinking of reading this I would advise you not to waste your time. I finished it out of stubborn determination. I haven't read any of her other books so she may be a great writer but I thought the writing style here was terrible - particularly irritating was the bland listing of what each character was wearing, their hair length and eye colour. The Alice and Lucas relationship was bizarre - Lucas was horrible and spent the whole time criticizing Alice and they didn't seem to like one...more
I loved this book right from the beginning. it's an easy read and I found it hard to put down once I started.
I love the plot and I must say when I read the blurb initially I thought the outcome would be predictable but it wasn't. though it had a happy ending it wasn't sickeningly sweet like some of the books in this genre tend to be in the end.
I could relate so much to Alice's emotions and her struggles. I think Lizzy's character wasn't too well rounded however but perhaps she was intended to s...more
