Well....... I picked up this notorious story so I could finally assuage my raging curiosity. Going into it, I was well aware of the blaring similarities between 'Fury', (and the rest of the New Species series from Dohner) and the older, but more well-known 'Breeds' series from Lora Leigh that I, and hordes of others, (mostly) love.

After having now read it, I can say there's no denying the plot and storyline of 'Fury' is indeed quite similar to that of the 'Breeds' novels and it does bear...more

4 Steamy Stars

Fury is intense, intriguing, fun, and extremely steamy. There are some editing issues that make the writing feel disjointed and convoluted at times (shame on you Eleanor's Cave). Other than that, I very much enjoyed this great start to the series.

4 stars!

Fury is a great start to a series that I’m anxious to continue! In a secret Mercile Industries testing facility, human beings are being genetically-altered with animal DNA. These test subjects are injected with drugs to enhance strength, to make them bigger, to fight harder, be faster, and heal quicker. Cruelty and abuse are part of their daily lives.

I realize that the premise isn't exactly original. I knew just by reading the description that I stood of chance of hating this series b...more

Great hot and intense start to a series! I look forward to reading more from this author.

I took the plunge and read the first in this series after being disappointed by the 7th book, which is the first New Species book that I read.

My first book by Dohner was Ral's Woman, which I liked. The erotic and sci-fi mix is done well by Dohner, yet there is something that makes her plot less fluid than I would like. In Fury, it could be the enemy faction that the New Species face or the too quick explanations of vulnerabilities and minor detail given on the females of New Species Nation.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Great story, great characters. I really love the idea of this book. The writing style is not my favorite but I'm hoping to get used to it and maybe it will get better as the series goes on. I will most definitely move onto book 2.

FYI- I'm now on book 5 and I LOVE this series!!!! I don't think it's so much the writing that's bothered me but the editing. Lots of mistakes. But honestly it doesn't matter because this series is FANTASTIC!

It was cute and an okay read; but the writing was often choppy and flat. The story didn't flow very well (poorly edited), and most of the parts that DID keep my interest were the parts that were lifted directly from another authors well known and far superior PNR series. (Can you say plagiarism)? I just don't think an author should be making money off of what amounts to fanfic. Some of the book was fairly well written, but much more of it was thrown together haphazardly, and many of the scenes j...more

This book has a set up remarkably similar to Lora Leigh's Breed series, almost uncomfortably so. I am a big fan of LL's Breed series but as we all know, her new work is badly edited (or not edited at all) and just not up to par. So I was kind of glad to read something similar that had a decent story that entertained me. I liked the leads, the heroine had more power in this setup because there was no mating heat to tie them down. The hero is dominant but the heroine is strong enough to stand up f...more

For a 1st book to a series (which I tend to have bad luck with) I must say that I enjoyed this introduction to this world very much. The writing was clean, the plot was fleshed out well & it was interesting. This one has a few gripping, intense, emotionally charged & erotic moments. But it also had me laughing out loud quite a bit.

The reason my rating is at a 3.5 stars though, is because a few of the scenes came off as campy a bit too cheesy at times but not so much that it completely ru...more

DFN. Sigh. This has only happened to me 3 times before, but I actually could not finish this book.

I really struggled with this one. The world/concept/story was good, but the writing was just so BAD!! And the sex was so beyond cheesy, even from the start, it was literally making me cringe and/or roll my eyes.

I stopped reading at 65%. But if I had to rate what I’d read so far, I’d give it about 2.5 stars – somewhere between ‘barely okay’ and ‘meh’.

It was just to the point where I was forcing mys...more

Loved it. I generally enjoy this genre of book because aside from the nice steamy sexy stuff there are a lot of other interesting aspects of the story. I haven't read the other series that other reviewers have compared this to, which I think was a positive thing since I don't have anything similar to compare this to and judge it against. I love the sic-fi aspect with the genetic modifications and stumbling through the repercussions of humans doing experiments that they don't fully understand. I...more

Well I am well and truly hooked. I couldn't put this book down and was disappointed I couldn't stay up last night and try to finish it. I have a soft spot for growly alpha males and this book is full of them. I loved how Justice was so protective of Ellie even though Fury would never truly hurt her. I like the setup for the whole series which is somewhat similar to Lora Leigh's Breed series. There are enough differences that you won't confuse the two groups of genetically altered humans. I will...more

Fury is a really great start to an amazing new series. I picked it up after some scrolling around on the Ellora Cave's and came along this baby. And it didn't disappoint.

Writing style tends to the modern internet dialogue. Format is heavy and choppy in certain parts. There are catch your breath moments but the next paragraph can turn you off.

Dohner in trying to introduce this new world put a little too much different conflicts and characters too soon. It leads to characters and story development...more

This is another one of those reads which somehow managed to get on my reading radar, this kind of romance sub-genre, I mean. I've read only one other similar book before this (one of Lora Leigh's Breed series) and I think I actually like this one better. Does this mean this kind of story line will now be a mainstay in my to-read list? Not really sure, but let's just say I actually would probably read more of Ms. Dohner's work because of this book, or at least read a few more in this series just...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. I read it in two days and it wasn't a bad book. It's certainly very intense, from an emotional point of view, but there were a lot of things about it that bothered me.

Sexual violence is something that really bothers me to read about and there is A LOT of in in this book. Because it's so horrifying, it's an easy thing to use to make readers feel for the characters and I don't particularly care for that kind of obvious manipulation. it's a personal thing, tho...more

I have enjoyed Laurann Dohner's books in the past - but I had never read any in this particular series. I think back then I was a bit put off by the concept and the warnings on the book blurb. I was so innocent back then - lol.
For the past couple of years I have pretty much converted to reading m/m stuff so I completely forgot about this series. When I read about an upcoming addition to the New Breed books I figured what the heck and bought Fury.
I have to say I enjoyed it. I read a ton of smutty...more

After reading other peopple's comments, I was concerned that this series would be too close to the "Breeds" series. It's very similar and there are some things that seem to have been lifted from it. I have to admit that I'm glad that I was able to get all of the series' books in one fell swoop so that I can read them all back to back, because if I had had to wait for each one to come out, the author would have lost me after Book 1.

I like it when I can read an author's full works and watch as the...more

I had read Dohner's Mates Set before this and I actually felt a little bit like I had earned some stupid at the end of that book but not so much with this one. Not that I think you can determine anything about a series by one book, but I have to say that I like the world of New Species more than I do her Mating Heat one. I felt that in this first New Species book the storyline and storytelling was so much better than the other book. In her Mating Set book, it felt almost a little pornographic. I...more

I thought the writing was good and Fury, the male lead was hunky and what not, but the story line just didn't do it for me. For instance in the beginning of the story I understand that Fury, the leading male character, felt betrayed and what not by Ellie, the leading female, but doing what he does in retaliation to that betrayal isn't what I like to read about. I think it had potential, but I don't want to read the rest only to find out that its going to end up making me want to rip my hair out....more

OMG what a beginning to a series.
Mercile Pharmaceutical Company has been performing illegal drug test and crossing human and animal DNA. They have been keeping human test subjects chained and emprisioned treating them like less than animals. Ellie is working undercover to try and gain evidence for the government to go in and save theses people but has become odsesses with one particular prisoner. She watches and dreams about him and saving him has become her true mission.

In the series of new species I have read Fury, Slade, Justice, Obsidian, Tiger, Wrath, and some of Valiant. I hope Ms. Dohner is ready to commit to this series because, I hate to tell you, I have at least seven new species I need you to write about. Here they are : Smiley, Flame, Brass, Jaded, Bestial, Vengeance, Midnight ( the female with the doctor), and some others. I also wish that she drops everything and writes only these for the rest of her life. I'm talking total seclusion, only getting...more

I can't quite give this 4 stars due to the inconsistent writing, but I really enjoy the story. The author gives a lot more information in the dialogue than most writers, and at times I find it unnecessary, that it breaks up the flow of the conversation.

I like that f&@$ed up shit happened to the Species on general so everything isn't nice and neat between the couples. I also thought that the author did well to create a character (Fury) with quirks and issues unique to his kind... He isn't a...more

I enjoyed the opening book to the New Species series more than expected. Fury and Ellie meet under extreme circumstances as she saves him from a violent rape and death by a coworker. Unfortunately she is forced to frame Fury for her actions because she is on a classified mission. Months later, Ellie meets Fury again as a free man but he feels that she owes him payment for her betrayal. His plans for retribution are misguided but he is a man obsessed!

New Species are now free but they still living...more

While the foundation of the new species series could be said to be quite similar to that of the Lora Leigh series ‘breeds’ I found that for me at least, they were two entirely separate entities. I have enjoyed reading these books and because I have a fondness for both series, in my mind I have separated them in to parallel universes.
The aspects that I have enjoyed the most in comparison because while one is highly sexualised (Leigh) the other is not as sexualised. While Fury and the other New...more

Let me first off by saying I was worried this would have been too similar to Lora Leigh's breed series. However, I was very wrong about this. I am glad Laurann Dohner left a few things out that would have made it way to much like The breeds. I will not list them because it would give some things away. Why would I do that?

I finished the first New Species book, and it was okay plus. I guess I just never was engaged with the characters and since the story didn't have that 'spark' to bring it to life, it felt long to me. There was lots of smex - not surprising for an EC release - but the background story was really just a bunch of vignettes not an actually plot - so have sex, then have a crisis in the background where Valliant thinks that Fury is going to kill his heroine and try to save her from him, rinse and repe...more

Wow! This tale knocked my socks off!

Ellie, a registered nurse, goes to work undercover for a pharmaceutical company suspected of doing barbaric, illegal experiments. The subject of these experiments, a "New Species" that this company has introduced by successfully splitting and mixing DNA from humans and various animal species in an attempt to create the perfect "Ultra" human. Ellie witnesses horrific treatment of these beings and her heart goes out to one specifically known inside the lab as "4...more

I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've alw...more

"I'm yours? I thought you hated me."

Kit stepped out of the bathroom. "We don't hate you. You're our pet."

"Kit!" Rusty shook her head. "Don't say that. You'll offend her."

Kit shrugged "She is. She's so little and cute. She yaps around trying to please like... What are they called? A Yorkie?"

Rusty sighed. "We decided she's more similar to a cute little poodle with her long blonde hair." She flashed a smile at Ellie. "Don't take it offensively please. We enjoy having you around and you amuse us to no end.”
