The breadth of this book covered everything from staying in homes with live-in servants to teenagers and cell phone use. Smith's tone is approachable yet firm - a combination that I find reassuring in a manners guide. A lot of overlap with other similar books, of course, but this one is comprehensive enough to be a standby, and did include some new pieces of information that I hadn't come across before. I've been fascinated by etiquette books since reading my first one (from the 1940s) in my teens (the 1980s). It's interesting to see throughout the years what changes, and what stays the same, what can I say?

(But boy, people look at you funny when they ask what you're reading and you answer "an etiquette book." Or they make a crack about how to set a table. Oy.)
