I was pretty disappointed with this book. To be honest though, I thought the same when I read the excerpt Jodi Picoult published months (maybe even a year) ago on her website. But I gave the book a chance because Ms Picoult is one of my favorite authors.
I guess the main problem with the book is that, unlike her previous books, the characters in "Lone Wolf" are boring and stale. Jodi Picoult's books are known for their intricate plots and well-developed characters. Her story-lines are typically...more

Let me start by saying, I love Jodi Picoult's novels. I've read 13 of them, most of which were thoroughly enjoyable (with only a couple of notable exceptions--Songs of the Humpback Whale for one). I'm always excited to see when she's written something new and can't wait for it to come into print. When I've read or listened to interviews she's given, I am always amazed that she writes all of her novels in about 9 months. For the most part, you would never be able to tell they are written so quick...more
Lone Wolf is Picoult’s latest novel released in 2012. It’s plot resides in the difficult decision making surrounding end of life measures. The Warren family is split, Luke and Georgie have separated each with their own new lives: Georgie in the form of a new relationship which Joe, a lawyer, and their two children, Luke with his wolf pack family. Their son Edward lives in Thailand, whilst their daughter decided to live with Luke, helping with the wolves. A terrible car accident brings the family...more

Whatever type of drama-family, medical, courtroom, even wild animal drama...this book has them all, with Jodi Picoult's signature all over it. It may be that her books has a certain mould, a template, but she gets published only once or twice a year so if you're like me who waits to read the latest, you can liken it to waiting for Christmas.

Ok i was criticized for reviewing it without finishing it plus i did want to be able to talk about it at our Book Club meeting...so I did end up finishing it... I still have not changed my mind... I did not like the book... I do not recommend it... I do not believe much of what she wrote about the wolves... They are dangerous wild animals... I did not and could not relate to the incredible lack of communication in the family...

I am a big fan of Jodi Picoult and have read most of her books. So I was pretty sure when I picked this one up I would enjoy it. And enjoy I did...as usual there are fascinating characters that she draws you into, revealing more of them bit by bit till you feel you know and maybe even understand them. That is one of the defining elements in all her writing. But in this book I got something extra and I think you will too. I learned a lot about wolves, and how they live, and how that pertains to h...more
Well I was always going to love this, being a book about wild animals and a man who struggles to find a balance between a life with them and a life with humans. There is no instinctive driver I can relate to more.
Whilst the leading character, Luke Warren himself is 'absent' (in a coma after an accident), we hear his voice throughout the novel, and come to understand that the man who seemed to be the underlying cause of all that was broken in this family, is perhaps the one who has been teaching...more

As with a few earlier Jodi Picoult books - and despite my best intentions - I couldn’t get past the self-centeredness of some of the characters in Lone Wolf. It always amazes me how this author can depict such ego-maniacal family members, so self-righteous and focused solely on their own needs that it practically destroys any connection, but also gets in the way of appreciating the story.
As you can guess, I’m disappointed with this book, and as hard as I tried I just couldn’t warm up to it. I d...more

This issue's beach bum pick is Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. It is one of those rare books that could truly fit into either the beach bum or book club categories. Readers of all interests should enjoy this interesting tale of a family in tragedy.
A terrible car accident draws Edward, the prodigal son, home from halfway around the world to be reunited with his family. However the reunion is far from a fairy tale. Unfortunately, his father Luke and sister Cara...more

As soon as I heard about Jodi Picoult's latest novel, I just had to get my hands on a copy. When I did receive a copy from the publishers, I just couldn't wait to get started on it! Whilst I haven't read them all, I've read most of Jodi Picoult's novels and I've really enjoyed them, giving her a firm place in my favourite authors.

I love Jodi Picoult's books. She can take you into the world of Autism in one book and into the lives of wild wolves in another. I could not put this book down. I spent all of a glorious, beautiful Colorado Saturday with this book in hand. I finished it. It's on my list to re-read on down the line as I know I will pick up things I missed this time. Anyone who has ever wondered about, been intrigued by or has simply been fascinated by wolves - who also likes a good story along the way - this book...more
I do like all of Jodi Picoult's books, and this one was no exception. I found the wolf sections fascinating, and pretty amazing as well. Of course the story had its sad moments (there always has to be those with a Picoult book), and I did keep hoping for a miracle (even if I don't believe in miracles. ha), but oh well, she brings realism to fiction so I guess I had to expect how things turned out.
I'm not sure that this book 'gripped' me the way others of hers have, but it was still really good.

All of my friends are constantly raving about how amazing Jodi Picoult's books are, so I figured I'd better read one! I randomly chose this book, being it was at Target and there were only a few left. I read Lone Wolf in three days. I couldn't put it down! One of the best books I've read in awhile.

I share a love-hate relationship with Jodi Picoult’s novels. I will be the first to confess that I find her story telling mesmerising. I particularly like how she lets her characters evolve and make them very real for her readers. On the flip side, her novels are often predictable with the usual ingredients - a dysfunctional family, a controversial issue examined, courtroom drama and the unexpected twists and turns that go along with it, and episodes of betrayal. As a reader, I feel let down by...more
Well, I'm a bit prejudiced. I haven't met a Jodi Picoult book that I didn't like at some level BUT I would put this one in my top 3 or 4. I was prepared not to like it. I'd seen some reviews that weren't favorable BUT I thought her "formula" particularly was suited to this topic and her penchant for making you feel like you are inside some of the characters' heads was exactly what was needed to help the reader look at life and death decision-making and make it personal.

I like Jodi Picoult books. I was worried about reading this one because many of the reviewers didn't give this book a good rating. I like it. I enjoyed learning about the wolves. It made me look up on line to see if some person had really lived with the wolves like the man in the story. ***stop for spoilers** The protagonist goes to Canada to live with the wolves and is accepted by them. The whole story is a flash back. It starts with a car crash where a girl who lives with her father, gets into...more
I just loved this book . I have read everyone of Ms. Picoult books and she is one of my favorite authors. This book just grabs you right from the beginning. She paints such a clear picture of her characters that you feel like you have known them personlly. The story revolves around a man, Luke who has dedicate his life work understanding and living with wolves. He goes off for two years and joins a pack of wolves and returns after this absence to the family he has left behind. In truth when he r...more
I'm always wary of the first time I read books - did I really enjoy it because it was "new" and I was just excited to speed through a new story to conclusion? Or will it be less exciting if I read it again? And then I make the mistake of reading other people's reviews and my own opinions seem to change.

This is another one of those books that I could not put down.
In true Jodi Picoult fashion, this book was written extremely well and it had it's fair share of "twists." Also in Picoult's fashion, she takes a huge ethical dilemma/issue and runs with it. Usually, I'm ALL about this.
The one thing I always know about a Jodi Picoult is that the writing will be done well. Even if the story itself or the characters don't live up to expectations, her writing is almost always flawlessly done. That's why i...more

True to form Jodi Picoult has given us another ethical quandry, when do you terminate life support for a loved one and who should make that decision. Its a challenging question and one that I will admit that I struggle with often when thinking about writing out a living will, I mean I don't want to die and whose to say I won't get better? That is the challenge facing these two children and yes I say children even though Edward is of age to make the decision. I find that the mother of these child...more
Kiedy Luke, badacz wilków i gwiazda Animal Planet, zostaje poważnie ranny wracając z córką do domu, życie całej rodziny diametralnie się zmienia. Syn Luka, Edaward powraca z Tajlandii do której uciekł 6 lat temu po rozmowie z ojcem o której nikt nie wi...more

This is typical Jodi Picoult in style with withdrawal of life support as the core ethical issue. What makes this book unique, and the aspect that really drew me into the book, was the parallel voice of Luke and his relationship, knowledge, and understanding of wolf behavior. Jodi has woven native american beliefs and scientific data about wolf behavior into a story about human love and relationships.

THIS IS A SPOILER REVIEW:
It was an amazing book and the need to read it was an itch every time I was studying or doing something else.
But.
A few things made me wonder. I wondered when Danny Boyle appeared all smug and everything for a few pages and suddenly disappeared. I wondered if maybe Cara shouldn't have accused her brother of murder - since it was kind of unnecessary when we continued with the story.
And I just couldn't understand - I still don't understand why Luke Warren - the family m...more

In all fairness, I didn't finish this one. I read about half and then I skipped around the rest of it. I also just read a really well-written book so reading this after was a stark contrast. First of all, the theme is shoved down your throat and then some more. I get it. Wolves are given a bad wrap. Truthfully, I would rather read a book about elephants or gorillas or whatever and I envision those purple t-shirts with wolf faces and lightening in the back. But it was so heavy on the wolf theme t...more
I found it strange that a grown man would take off to live with wolves and choose these creatures over his family. But at the same time, I learned how a passionate man took up his cause to learn about these fascinating creatures and made it his life to better understand them. Jodi Picoult's book is based on the real life book and actual events by author Shaun Ellis entitled, The Man Who Lives With Wolves. In her book, her character Luke Warren is based on Shaun Ellis.

Almost 5 years ago, I had to watch my mother deteriorate on life support for a month. This book was a painful but somehow therapeutic read. It hit me so close to home but what I liked the most about it is how genuine everything felt from the visits to the ICU, the meetings with the doctors, and the pain of the uncertainty of a parent's recovery. The daughter Cara is 17 years-old and I was 18 years-old when I had to go through something very similar with the parent I was closest to. The grief she...more
