The Jackets by Liz DeJesus is a collection of short stories where emotions are conveyed through the use of colors. Specifically, the color of jackets worn by the main characters.
The first story, Red, tells of two people who are destined to cross paths. Laura is stuck trying to find happiness and love. Allen watches her pass his house daily, noting that her red jacket makes her appear as "a rose trying to bloom in the middle of a storm." One day Allen notices that her color appears to be faded. H

Each story takes the reader into small piece of each woman’s life. Each chapter is named after the color of the woman’s jacket. Sometimes the jacket plays a big part in the story. Other times, it is a minor player. The colors represent many things from love and warmth to coldness and death, but one of the major threads is finding love in the places you sometimes forget to look.
