Slow, Confusing to Start & Then I Enjoyed It...

I had a difficult time getting into this book at the beginning. For whatever reason I found the writing to be difficult and hard to understand. It just didn't flow smoothly and it left me confused. Before too long I finally felt like I understood what was going on and what was being written and it was smooth sailing from there.

I've read a few different stories that jump back and fourth from decade to decade and haven't usually been very big on t
This is an older reprint, but it's not dated. There are two stories here. One set today (actually in the 70s, when it was written, I guess) and the other in 1933. Central to the story is an Indian insane asylum. This asylum really existed, and the horrendous abuse the inpatients suffered is based on truth. Both stories and both couples were wonderful. I'd give the book 4.5 stars. There's a good deal of Native American history here. The book is a combination of great characters, romance, and hist ...more
I requested this one from NetGalley becauses it takes place right here in South Dakota. It's not common to find books set in South Dakota. It turns out that this is a reprint (rerelease?) from 1996 but one that I had not read. To be honest, I struggled a bit with this one. Eagle's books are very heavy books with a big emphasis on race relations. Sometimes this works for me and sometimes I just want to get on with the romance. Additionally, since this was in the 1970s, the scenes in Rapid City we ...more
Terri is intense in the feelings that come from reading about the treatment given to the 'inmates' of the mental institution. I do realize that white people in these institutions were treated just as badly, but in an earlier time. The treatment of Indians in this country has been nothing to brag about...but at the same time, these things should not be hidden, they need to be exposed, and stopped.

The book is not an 'enjoyable' read, but one that made me think...

An important book in that it reveals a very important piece of history. A piece of history that got me, personally, harassed, harangued and run off the road twice, but it was worth it because there is now a marker there to show for all the hard work. No matter how hard the City of Canton tried to hide it, there is a permanent reminder there now of what they did and who ultimately is to blame for the lives lost at the Hiawatha Asylum.
A favorite of all time. This book touched my heart like few have. I made a trip revolving around all the places mentioned in this book. The horror of the way these people were treated is gut wrenching. Kathleen is a very talented author and I have read just about every book she has written, but this book outshines them all.

This is a romance novel set in South Dakota involving Zane Lone Bull and Michelle Benedict. They meet, have problems, fall in love, and marry. Usual story line, just a different setting.
This book is amazing. The reader feels the despair of its characters and also the hope that builds within them as they grow closer and closer to the truth.
This book was totally awesome. It made me cry and it made me smile. I would definitly suggest this book to anyone who wants a good romance book
Although this novel begins in the present, it also takes the reader back to the past in which our lovers learn they hace loved before.
