The soldier suddenly beckoned Irene and Karl to follow him. Karl Berger and his family have survived Hitler's Reich only to again be devastated by Soviet rule. His parents decide young ...more

Beyond the wall is a intriguing and eventful insight into the life of a young German boy -Karl- through WWII and the following years in Germany. The boy in question is infact Susan Allred's Father and tells the tale of his growing up in a delightful novel for older children. Susan has written this story with the target audience in mind but still portrayed the horrific devastation which the war caused to families who went to war and even those who were affected indirectly.

This book is a short story and fascinating account of the author's father and his boyhood days in Germany. It is captivating and took me just a day to read. It begins with Germany at war and Karl as a young boy being rushed off to a bomb shelter. His father is off fighting in the war and he is being raised by his mother and grandmother. I didn't know if I was going to like this book at first, but I loved it. The idea that it is written about the author's father made it seem personal. It is not only a great story, but it has a great message of perseverance. This book is great for readers of all genres because there are so many layers to it, so much depth. Allred writes with a sense of honesty and clarity that flows during the entire book. I loved it.

JUST won this and looking forward to it!

LOVED IT! Perfect introduction for my son to some of the ugliness that took place during WWII. This is an incredible memoir of a young boy's experience of war. Perfect for 9-12 year olds and well written enough that I too was wrapped up in the suspense of the story.

I won this book through the goodreads website. This was a really good read. Although it was written for elementary school kids, it was still a great story that was also true. WWII was a huge part of our history and it is nice to read about it without it being too scary or emotional.
