What can I say? I love Anderson's independent book shop in Illinois! I found this little gem while visiting the store over the summer and was delighted to share it with my class when I spotted it at the local library recently. C.R. Mudgeon is a memorable little hedgehog: he does everything the exact same way every day and does not ever wish to veer from his routine. We all know someone like that, right? We wish that they would branch out and enjoy life a little more fully but it's hard to know h...more
C.R. Mudgeon is a hedgehog who likes the slow and comfortable pace of his very predictable life. He is quite rattled by his new and very animated neighbor, Paprika, who is quite his opposite. A cute story of friendship building and the idea of trying things outside your comfort zone, all great things to share with kids, because for many those skills don't come naturally. I love the cute, but not cutesy detailed illustrations. Another friend pointed out that you need to watch C.R.'s sweater.
C. R. Mudgeon is a hedgehog who doesn't like surprises. He follows a ridge schedule and he likes it that way. C. R. ends his evenings with "his hedgehoggity feet into his woolly slippers" in his favorite chair by a fire reading his favorite book, Medical Cures from A to Z.
His routine is disrupted when Paprika moves in next door. Full of enthusiasm, she brings color, spices, and music to the neighborhood. C. R. doesn't like it. He complains that the poppies make him see spots, and the spices are...more

Filled with effective word-play, this hedge-hoggy grump interacts with a remarkable community and finds his way into it from the sidelines. The illustrations are particularly appealing in detail and nuance, expressiveness and humor.

Adjusting perfect routines makes life even better! –Monty K.-
Preschooler may have been a little bit young to really “get” this story of friendship, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. C.R. Mudgeon and his neighbor, Paprika, are perfect mirror images of each other. I giggled at her persistence in gaining his friendship, as well as his efforts to keep her at arms length. Predictable? Yes. But the story’s message is one worth hearing a few times. And keep an eye on the detailing of C.R. Mudgeon’s sweater. Julian Hector adds her own little mark to the story.
C. R. Mudgeon's predictable--yet comfortable--life is disrupted when a new neighbor introduces elements of change in an otherwise stable, expected world.
For older readers, this book would serve well as an introduction to THE PORTABLE CURMUDGEON series.
