5 Reasons to Leave a Lover - A Novella and Other Short Stories

In 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover, author Carolyn Moncel offers up a fresh batch of stories based on love and loss. As singer/songwriter, Paul Simon so eloquently suggested in a famous song from the 1970s, there are many ways to leave a lover. However, Moncel's characters demonstrate that the reasons for leaving in the first place are quite finite. Encounters in Paris' Ellery ...more

Short stories can go either way for me. It's always hard to tell whether or not I will like a book that is composed of short stories. Sometimes they are so short that you just don't get enough to make a good story. This was not the case for this book. I felt satisfied after reading each story. The stories were well written and complete.

Ellery had to deal with the all too common issue of being cheated on. She had a feeling that her husband was cheating on her, but she tried to overlook all of the

Heading: Heart Feelings

Love, trust, commitment, respect and responsibility are elements of a good relationship. When one or more of these elements are missing, it disturbs the natural flow of a relationship, and decisions will need to be made. In 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover: A Novella and Other Short Stories, Carolyn Moncel tells the poignant tales of love, loss, heartbreak and saying goodbye.

The novella, which consists of three stories, explores how infidelity not only affects the wife and the h
Paris is supposed to be the land of romance, not heartbreak. Maybe that is why Ellery Roulet shut her eyes to the truth. She didn't pay attention to the signs of her husband's infidelity. She also blamed herself. Was she not attentive enough? Did she let herself go physically? Was the mistress younger, prettier? All of these questions went through Ellery's head, and I'm sure other women's minds in real life.

Husband Julien Roulet is forced to make a decision. He still loves his wife, Ellery, but

Ms. Moncel provides a novella and two short stories that all share a common theme of lost love.

Set Yourself Free, Ellery
In this novella, Ellery discovers that Julien, her husband, has been unfaithful. Julien has made poor decisions and struggles with how to set things right. However, his actions have touched so many people, making it impossible for anyone to escape unscathed. I don't usually like stories about cheating but Ms. Moncel did a great job with the characters and their side of the stor

Carolyn Moncel gives us three stories about love and marriage. As the title says, the stories are about the ways to leave a lover. The first and second stories are about infidelity. Moncel brings back two of her characters, Julien and Ellery, from Encounters in Paris, also a collection of short stories. After ten years of marriage, Julien has an affair and the reader is able to see into the minds of all involved: Julien, Ellery, and the mistress. The second story gives of the perspective of the ...more

While there are most certainly many ways to leave a lover—as Paul McCartney told us in song—there are only a few reasons to leave a lover. Moncel explores these reasons in her collection 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover. Moncel’s characters bring to life the heartache experienced when a relationship fractures apart, no matter the reason.

Carolyn Moncel’s 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover—A Novella and Other Short Stories is a quick read exploring the various reasons that relationships end. In the novella, she

I started reading this book the other evening thinking, I'll just read the first story and then finish it off tomorrow etc but I read the whole book start to finish. The first novella deals with Ellery and her husband Julien, I am finding writing this review really hard to do without giving away spoilers, so excuse me if I seem a bit cryptic. I could really identify with Ellery and how she felt betrayed, and thought her vengeance on her husbands possessions were hilarious! I think the way Ellery ...more

Love Is a Many Splendored Thing

Carolyn Moncel gives her readers three novellas that cover the different faces of love in “5 Reasons to Leave a Lover.”

The first novella deals with Ellery and Julien who are at a crossroad in their marriage. Ellery finds out Julien has been cheating, and she is determined to deal with the other woman. Even though the theme of cheating has been covered in many books I’ve read, this author writes an emotional story that takes a look inside the heart of everyone invol

I haven’t read ‘Encounters in Paris’ so for me, this is the first time I’ve read about Ellery and Julien Roulet.

Set in Paris, the novella begins with Ellery having slept during the day after an emotional time. Husband Julien has picked up their children, twins Evie and Maddie from school, and has left the apartment. Ellery contacts her best friend Lola as she has a need to talk but Lola is not available.

What follows is an emotional rollercoaster ride for all the members of the family due to Elle

This book contains 3 terrific novellas. The first one concerns Ellery and her husband. Ellery feels betrayed-as she should-by her husband and decides to take revenge. The author infuses her words with humor so as to lessen the damage Ellery inflicts upon her husband's possessions. The way Ellery restrains herself beyond the initial blow-up was inspiring, she was a truly likable and good character. Her character may be flawed, but that makes is so much easier for the readers to connect to her. Th ...more
There’s a particularly French style of literature—introspective, slightly detached, deeply rational… I’m not quite sure what the right word is to describe it, but I found myself thinking of recent French novels I’ve read—Elegance of the Hedgehog, and O3—when I started Carolyn Moncel’s 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover. The title, of course, evokes memories of the Paul Simon song, though the reasons for leaving might easily boil down to five, as the back of the book explains, “abuse, ambivalence, decept ...more

This is the first book of Carolyn's that I have read and I was very happy. I have not read Encounters in Paris in which the first couple, Ellery and Julien, were introduced. I was still able to enjoy the story without reading the first book. These short stories give a glimpse into 3 very different relationships. Though the first 2 stories deal with infidelity, which can be depressing, I found myself truly feeling sorry for the characters. Carolyn did an excellent job of making me feel what they ...more

Relationships are difficult. They are often fragile, especially when they are neglected. They end for a variety of different reasons, but how do you know when it's time to walk away? What's a deal breaker for one person may or may not be for another, while our limits may vary, the pain of heartbreak is universal.

5 Reasons to Leave a Lover explores five different relationships that have reached their breaking point. Carolyn Moncel has done a remarkable job of exploring the inevitable emotional t

This novella by Carolyn Moncel wraps up the story with a satisfying ending and although, I would like to have seen it as a full novel, it was an enjoyable read.

It was not all hearts and flowers, it was real. Affairs, tangled relationships are not always as easy and satisfying as some stories would lead us to believe.

I really enjoyed getting to know how the characters were feeling about their role in this love triangle and what happens eventually.

This is available on Kindle and would make a lovel

I don't really know what to say about this book. I didn't develop feelings for the characters. Sure, I felt bad for them and what they were going through, but that was it. It was as if I was detached from their lives. This is a story I'd rather be attached to the characters and live their lives with them instead of being a bystander.

This is a relatively quick read and the writing is great. However, there were some instantances that I wish the French terms were explained. There were a couple that
In the novella (the first story), I liked the setting, Paris, which somehow makes the story more intriguing, cosmopolitan, a little sophisticated. I also liked the topic: a man is planning to leave his wife and we see the situation from his and her view point, as well as (briefly) from the lover’s point of view.

I found Ellery’s reaction, destroying more or less all of Julien’s possessions rather over the top, but we’re all different, and I’m sure there are people who would do that. In all other

Ms. Moncel has explored the feelings of a jilted wife, her cheating husband, and the mistress in the first novelette giving the reader a first person point-of-view from each character. Told mainly through narrative and inner dialogue it was hard for me to connect with the characters. Ellery Roulet, a 35 year-old American PR executive living and working in Paris, was a strong independent character who has an emotional response to Julien’s infidelity by destroying all of his possessions. Julien fe ...more

I am not usually a reader of short stories, I think I have only ever reviewed one other here before. I thought this one sounded interesting though. I'm not sure interesting is still the word I would use but it is entertaining. I wouldn't exactly call it chick-lit but it is pretty close. It's an easy read (took me less that a day) and about romance which are features stereotypically found in chick-lit, but it is less happy than chick-lit normally is. I did have the same problem I have with most s ...more

From the Author:

On the Character Julien Roulet: Despite his very bad behavior at times, I have to say that I still have a crush on Julien. The way that he speaks and rationalizes his decisions is quintessentially French. There is a passage in the novella where his wife, Ellery, must confront him. They are sitting in beautiful Parc Monceau and Ellery says something to the effect, “I will not love you again, Julien.” Julien’s response, “I don’t believe you because ‘will’ implies that you ‘could’ i

I won this book through Firstreads, which rocked my world! :) This book examines love, or rather, losing love. There were a few editing mistakes involving quotation marks, but otherwise no large errors. However, the book just wasn't as interesting as I was hoping it would be. The story bounced around a bit and just felt a little too mundane and everyday, without any lessons. The short stories included at the end of the book were a little better as they examined love from other angles. Overall, I ...more
