I loved it. The Star Wars galaxy has become a much darker, much more disturbing place than ever before. It almost reminded me of the tone of Battlestar Galactica at times (though please don't think it was on par with that story arc writing wise, it did have a similiar tone). I thoroughly enjoyed this totally new direction with the Star Wars Universe. It breathed new life into old stale material for me. Now Luke and his Jedi have an uncertain future to contend with with this ends, and we learn of...more

A fitting ending for the beginning of a new, dark chapter of the Star Wars galaxy. I liked this series a little better than the previous one, «Legacy of the Force». Not that the former wasn't good (it was) but «Fate of the Jedi» followed a more unpredictable path — the second half of the series is completely different in tone and feel compared to the first half, which started as a cross-country journey filled of Force mysticism.

This book in particular is deserving of its title. I'm not going int...more

The end of a nine book series, I can't help but feel disappointed by both this book and the series. And the state of Star Wars novels in general. There seems to be far too much spinning of the wheels. Personally, I feel like it might be time to move on in the story to a point where Luke, Han, and Leia are no longer alive, or at least no longer major players. There are only so many situations that they can successfully extract themselves from before a reader starts losing a little interest. SW ha...more

A weak and unsatisfying ending to a two-year series. It has its moments: a heroic death, a shocking betrayal, a long-awaited social event. But mostly it's overcooked pasta. The final battle with the big bad defines anti-climactic: I hadn't even realized the fight was over until a few pages into the next chapter. A key ally in that battle is left as a deus ex machina, and not in a tantalizing way, just as a convenient excuse for help and an annoying batch of loose ends.

Perhaps the best Expanded...more

This is a fairly well-written and engaging book on its own merits, if a trifle tedious in its description of lengthy paramilitary campaigns. As a conclusion to a series that partly marketed itself as a bridge between the novel and Legacy comic continuities, however, it is an unmitigated failure that taints the otherwise excellent Fate of the Jedi series irredeemably.

This book, and by extension the entire series, does virtually NOTHING to reconcile the state of affairs between the two timelines...more

This was a great wrap-up to the Fate of the Jedi series. At first I really thought we were going to see the "death" of Luke Skywalker by the end of the book. But in all honesty, true to form, we see the typical "happy" ending we've seen in Expanded Universe novels for years. Troy Denning did a great job of tying up the majority of dangling plot threads. Granted, there are a few still out there waiting for a new series to be written, but nothing that leaves the current series feeling incomplete....more

I have read a lot of Star Wars over the years. From Thrawn, to the Jedi Academy series, most of the New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Jedi and now Fate of the Jedi. I've read a decent amount of the comics, mostly Old Republic and the way-in-the-future Legacy series. I've watched some Clone Wars, and spent an unfortunate amount of time on Wookiepedia.com. And of course, I've watched the movies many, many times. So, I feel like I have some chops when it comes to the Star Wars Universe (maybe nothing t...more

After finishing Apocalypse, I feel somewhat let down. I am trying to figure out if I fell asleep while I was reading chapters because it felt like chunks of the story were missing. There was a big battle...and then it was over (in a second)...and we seemed to jump ahead...and there was another battle... and then it was over. You get the idea. I found myself rereading the pages because abrupt endings of action just skipped ahead - kind of like when a CD skips part of a song.

Overall, I liked the s...more

The Fate of the Jedi series concludes with Apocalypse, penned by Troy Denning. Wrapping up the nine-novel arc begun by Aaron Allston with Outcast, readers will see the ultimate victory--or defeat--of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Order. Does Apocalypse live up to it's name--or even its title?

An ok end to the series, though a little anti-climatic. It didn't really leave me fulfilled, and left a lot of loose ends. And the victory seemed too easy.

Another adventure with all my favorite characters was definitely enjoyable. There were a lot of very powerful scenes that were beautifully written and very much affected me emotionally (especially the terrifying and cringe worthy scenes in which Abeloth is described in detail) but it did not overshadow Troy Denning's annoying habit of telling...more

And the crowd stands and cheers for the heroes who saved the galaxy again. Okay it sounds corny but it works in this one. After the devastating losses in the previous two large Star Wars series I was very relieved this one ended the way it did. Yes the war is not over but this battle is won. Overall this was a pretty superb series. It delves into some pretty whacky philosophy that reeks of religion but the return of the Sith was pretty cool. The battles were pretty epic and for once the Jedi wer...more

After reading the entire Fate of the Jedi story, I was really hoping for a decent conclusion to the series, especially by Troy Denning. Instead, I found the story difficult to follow, too broad, too undefined, too irrelevant to the rest of the SW universe and just too over the top. This is not to mention the numerious loose strings and failed sense of conclusion the book brings. The Lost Tribe of the Sith held potential, but the facts behind their very existance make me want to cry "bullshit!" (...more

The final book in this series, Apocalypse brought everything to a suspenseful and satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed the series, but I think every series after The New Jedi Order has suffered in comparison. The stakes in that series were so high and the writing and plots so incredible that it's hard to top. I did like this series better than Legacy of the Force though.

This book really had the feeling of a conclusion as well as the feeling that they're truly moving forward. Allana is finally revea...more

This could be a remark about the series itself, but since Troy Denning was a part of the team to write the series as a whole, his part in this novel also reflects my thoughts on the entire series. Apocalypse had so much in it, that I actually stopped to check what page I was on in order to wonder how the author would be able to wrap everything up in time for the conclusion. When I checked to see that I was on page 300 and absolutely nothing had been solved, I began to worry.

As a series, I think...more

This novel brings the nine-volume "Fate of the Jedi" arc to its conclusion; at least, that's the anticipated goal of the narrative. With so many plot threads waiting for resolution, there's a reason why this is the thickest Star Wars novel in quite some time.

Unlike the "Legacy of the Force" arc, which was hobbled by an inexplicable decision to retread the prequels with the rise and fall of Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus, this series was all about dealing with the consequences of the Second Galactic Civ...more

I have read a few of the Star Wars books here and there, none of them really grabbed me the way this series of books did. I enjoyed the whole story. It was rich in Star Wars history/mythology from book 1 to book 9. While not every book was great, having 3 different authors tell the story through series can change the way some of the books flow and can alter their quality and effectiveness. But I can’t see one author doing the whole series of books in a 4 year period, and I know that not even the...more

If I told you I was reading a Star Wars novel called Apocalypse, what would you imagine? Insane action sequences? A beloved character being killed? The destruction of an entire set of planets? That's what I expected, but this novel failed to deliver on all counts. There were a few scattered relatively intense moments, but it seemed that the Luke, Leia, Han, and crew spent most of the book standing around talking about what to do instead of actually doing it. Unless you have an indelible urge to...more

Being the final book in the Fate of the Jedi series, it was far from a disappointment. Troy Denning, who has written two books in the series before this one (Abyss, #3 & Vortex, #6) was able to bring the series to a solid finale. Denning truly has a way with worlds and a great talent for description and action.

With this novel, time vanishes out window drawing the reader in and succumbing him to the overall action in the novel. It was a fast-paced mov...more

I think this might be the best Star Wars novel I've ever read... and considering how many of them I've read over the last decade, that's saying something. It's packed with some of the best action scenes I've ever read, filled with great characterization and developments for some of my favorite characters, and deftly ties up threads that have been around for the last two or three series while still setting up more for the next one, whenever and whatever that may be. It also touches on why I love...more

This book was better than Ascension. The FotJ series has been better than LotF. That's not sayingba whole lot for the main EU story, though. I am really jaded towards this part of the EU at this point. Ben and Vestara got screwed in this series. Allana is beyond believability. Jaina gets married which we all knew was was coming since she and Jag got together in the NJO. So, it has never been a matter of if, but when. The only chance in the last two series for something original was the whole Ben...more

I have read each subsquent Star Wars series over the years ending most recently with this one (Apr 2013). I truly loved this series almost more than any other. As much as I love star wars, I am just not a heavy sci-fi reader so the New Jedi Order (NJO) and Swarm War series were kind of hard for me. Also the Legacy of the Force series had alot of darker moments that while fun to read at times, became difficult as well. All that being said, I was a little dissapointed in this book and the ending....more

These Star Wars long-arc non-youth books epitomize the old saying, "You can't judge a book by its cover." This story was no more apocalyptic than the last one was ascending. And I can't think of one scene in which a male main character carrying a green lightsaber is dressed in layers of shiny black robes. Annoying.

I've listened to the last two books in this series instead of reading them, and I think I'd rather read them first. I miss too much detail when I just listen.

Although Mark Thompson doe...more

I liked the "Fate of the Jedi" series. It moved the Star Wars universe along, several years into its future. First, the "Joiners" series of three books was full of insectoid beings that left your skin crawling. Then came "The New Jedi Order" where a favorite character was knocked off in nearly every one of the nearly 20 books in the series, an exhausting ride to say the least. Finally came the "Fate of the Jedi" series, nine books which tied the first two series together and revealed that the ca...more

General review for the whole series, minor spoilers.

Thank God this silly excuse for a series is over. Props to Troy Denning for doing his best to wrap this up in some manner of style. I still haven't decided which I dislike more - the Legacy of the Force series, or this one. Both were unnecessarily dark for Star Wars (although that has been the trend since '99), but at least "Legacy" started out dark. By the end of this series, the Jedi are almost completely unrecognizable - slaughtering beings...more

What a disappointing finish. I was excited from reading the other Fate of the Jedi books and was looking forward to the action and resolution in this book. About halfway through I got the feeling that this book would not live up to my expectations. A major character didn't act how I thought she would, exciting scenes that were foreshadowed didn't happen, and the last major battle involved a character that was nonexistent throughout the series. Three or four times I found myself wishing that the...more

Troy Denning has done a great job with this series. This book was worth the wait. I could hardly put it down. Great ending and the door is still open for more books.

At last the conclusion of the Fate of the Jedi series is over. Overall I liked the series better than the previous one. In this book, we find out how the Jedi will deal with the Sith who have invaded Coruscant. Various Jedi must go out to take on manifestations of Abeloth, and a mission of Jedi talk to the Killiks to find out the history behind Abeloth.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. The ending was well done. I wondered how they were going to resolve the Ben/Vestara, Jagged/Jaina, and Allana plotl...more
