As a Southern Belle myself, it was a pleasure to pick up this book and follow Katie Lightfoot as she travels from Ohio to a quaint little community in Savannah, Georgia. She is moving to help her Aunt and Uncle open up a bakery called the Honeybee Bakery. What made this book the most enjoyable for me is that Katie was unaware that she was a witch before coming to stay with her Aunt and Uncle. This is a pretty fair niche mystery. I don't know that it adds too much to the genre, and it's not the most original story I've ever read. But it was a quick, easy read, and it had its moments where it was rather fun.

This one was most definitely not a heavyweight contender for most memoriable reads past or present, but it was a nice little mental vacation from the dark, heavy scary stuff I typically allow to iinfiltrate into my dreamstate. I chose to read this book was it had been a while since I had read a cozy. I was a little bit leary to read about witches and magic, but it definitely didn’t disappoint. There were spells cast and introduction to the magic, but it was done in a very cute way.

I blame this book for my sudden cravings for sugar and coffee. The story was a cute little magical chick lit mystery. I haven't read anything similar in a long time and it was nice to return to this genre. Especially when there is baking and animals involved. I liked this book. For a change, this type of book was very well written. So often books like this, ie coy mystery with magic and a bakery, it wasn't just written to order with cheesiness written throughout. I have read some others like that and I won't read those authors again. The mystery was well developed with a slight possibility of who the killer was early on, but it was so slight I forgot about it until the end. It was alright. I like the ideas presented in this book and might try the next one. There just seemed to be lots of info dumping and that got old.
I would suggest picking up Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost over this book. Both about witches and a bakery !

I liked that Bailey explained the craft properly so people didn't depict the Spellbook club as a bunch of satanic worshipping grannies. I also liked that she included the actual recipes for two of the dishes they served at the bakery, the peanut butter swirl brownies and the cheddar sage scones..definitely going to try making them once the cool weather returns. It's interesting that a 32 year old hereditary which can reach that age without realizing that she is one. Her parents have hidden their talents all her life and pooh-poohed when she said something as a youngster, so when she goes in with her Aunt & Uncle, Katie is in for a real awakening up learning some family history.
