As a Southern Belle myself, it was a pleasure to pick up this book and follow Katie Lightfoot as she travels from Ohio to a quaint little community in Savannah, Georgia. She is moving to help her Aunt and Uncle open up a bakery called the Honeybee Bakery. What made this book the most enjoyable for me is that Katie was unaware that she was a witch before coming to stay with her Aunt and Uncle. Watching Katie open up to the craft and fully accept it was awesome. As the reader I was starting to get...more

From Signet:
Katie Lightfoot's tired of loafing around as the assistant manager of an Ohio bakery. So when her aunt Lucy and uncle Ben open a bakery in Savannah's quaint downtown district and ask Katie to join them, she enthusiastically agrees.

While working at the Honeybee Bakery—named after Lucy's cat—Katie notices that her aunt is adding mysterious herbs to her recipes. Turns out these herbal enhancements aren't just tasty—Aunt Lucy is a witch and her recipes are actually spells!

This is the first in a new mystery series, set in Savannah, Georgia. Katie Lightfoot is trying something new in the aftermath of a bad breakup. She moves to Savannah to help her aunt with a new bakery. When an obnoxious woman is murdered right outside the bakery, her uncle is accused because of a recent argument. Katie investigates (of course) with the aid of two very attractive local men, her newly acquired cairn terrier, and the brand new knowledge that she is a witch, as is her aunt. She waff...more

Why a Five Star rating right from the beginning? Well, let me see if I can convince you to pick up a copy and rate it likewise.

Location is Savannah, Georgia. Many reputable persons consider Savannah to be one of the most, if not the most, haunted locations in Northern United States of America. This story is Titled "Brownies and Broomsticks." Also, Savannah is famous for its delicious and mind numbing foods and a valid Sweet Tea contender. So, That makes it a five star site. Oh, and the going bus...more

This is a pretty fair niche mystery. I don't know that it adds too much to the genre, and it's not the most original story I've ever read. But it was a quick, easy read, and it had its moments where it was rather fun.

This was one of those strange books that I enjoyed while I was reading it (for the most part), but the second I put it down, I was struck by its flaws. (Literally. I opened the computer, ready to give this a better review, but the second I started to type, I thought, "Wait...") The...more

This one was most definitely not a heavyweight contender for most memoriable reads past or present, but it was a nice little mental vacation from the dark, heavy scary stuff I typically allow to iinfiltrate into my dreamstate. A near-perfect scenario in which the girl is recently single again, moves away to join another family member's household, one who just happens to have a job she'd be perfect for, and along comes the Mr Dreamy she's meant to be with only she really doesn't' know it yet. I chose to read this book was it had been a while since I had read a cozy. I was a little bit leary to read about witches and magic, but it definitely didn’t disappoint. There were spells cast and introduction to the magic, but it was done in a very cute way.

All of the characters were very likeable and interesting. I still wonder if the neighbor will appear in the next installments of the series. I almost wonder if she is a witch as well. I thought Katie made an excellent sleuth. Very strong and...more

I blame this book for my sudden cravings for sugar and coffee. The story was a cute little magical chick lit mystery. I haven't read anything similar in a long time and it was nice to return to this genre. Especially when there is baking and animals involved. I'm excited to try the brownie recipe provided at the end, and maybe I'll even try out the scone recipe too. Back to the story itself: I loved reading along as the main character is always getting herself into trouble and winding up in situ...more

This is the first book in the Magical Bakery series. Katie Lightfoot has just moved to Savannah to run a bakery with her aunt Lucy and uncle Ben. Ben is accused of murder when Mrs. Templeton, a mean hearted woman with a lot of money, has her neck broken after arguing with him. A witness places a man fitting his description leaving the scene. Katie is desperate to clear her uncle so she goes nosing around where she shouldn't and ends up in danger.

I liked that the cops weren't the enemy and that K...more

This was a cute book. The main character, Katie, as is frequently the case at the outset of a new series, is in a state of transition. She's just been dumped by the guy she was planning to marry, so she moves halfway across the country to help out with the new bakery her aunt and uncle are starting since she has some experience in the field. All seems perfect until someone is killed during an event hosted at the bakery shortly before it officially opens to the public and her uncle is implicated...more

Brownies and Broomsticks is the first book in the A Magical Bakery Mystery series. And what an enjoyable story it is, too.

Katie Lightfoot heads for Savannah to put her culinary skills to work in her aunt and uncles' Honeybee Bakery. Katie, her Aunt Lucy and Uncle, and few close friends are busy putting the final touches in the Honeybee Bakery, with opening just a week away. Mavis Templeton of the Downtown Business Association stops in see if the Honeybee Bakery will be able to handle the groups...more

The initial novel in the Magical Baker series, Bailey Cates's "Brownies & Broomsticks" is a surprising opening to the story of the Honeybee Bakery in Savannah, GA. When the bakery is forced open a couple days early due to Mavis Templeton's demanding that the DBA meet their early, the owner Katie Lightfoot is put to the test. When Mavis turns up dead, a rather revealing mystery ensues not only about the owners of the businesses, but a secret in Katie's own family history is revealed. Cates's...more

I liked this book. For a change, this type of book was very well written. So often books like this, ie coy mystery with magic and a bakery, it wasn't just written to order with cheesiness written throughout. I have read some others like that and I won't read those authors again. The mystery was well developed with a slight possibility of who the killer was early on, but it was so slight I forgot about it until the end. The characters were well developed and it was the type of book to keep me rea...more

It was alright. I like the ideas presented in this book and might try the next one. There just seemed to be lots of info dumping and that got old.

I would suggest picking up Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost over this book. Both about witches and a bakery !

I am such a sucker for niche mysteries - especially good magical stories or those with food. Hello Magical Bakery series!

Katie Lightfoot has moved to Savannah, Georgia to open a bakery with her aunt and uncle. A horrible, but powerful member of the downtown business association is murdered outside the bakery after an association brunch and Katie's uncle is the prime suspect. There are a lot of characters to meet in this first book, but they are distinct enough to keep them all straight.

I liked that Bailey explained the craft properly so people didn't depict the Spellbook club as a bunch of satanic worshipping grannies. I also liked that she included the actual recipes for two of the dishes they served at the bakery, the peanut butter swirl brownies and the cheddar sage scones..definitely going to try making them once the cool weather returns. I was a little disappointed in the plot, very predictable outcome but I was happy that she didn't tell you who winded up with who in the...more

First book in a new PN-mystery series. The setting is a bakery run by a witch, her non-magical husband and her niece (who is also a witch.)

Set in Savannah, a lovely city, you get to meet charming--and not so charming--characters, have a little magic, mystery and a dash of possible romance. Everything you need for a cozy mystery. As with most cozies (even the PN ones) a great deal of the story actually deals with the delightful characters you meet up with, pushing the "mystery" part into a very...more
