These are really just introductions to books in a library collection rather than a comprehensive survey. But still a very happy read. Like all Godine editions, this book is beautifully typeset. Barlow's introductions are very readable. The highlight of the book for me was Reginald Arkell's hilarious garden poetry.
I had thought this to be a collection of essays or excerpts by various writers on gardens, but it is instead about the writers and their writings, with some quotes. The author has categorized the writers under various chapter headings such as Women in the Garden, Humorists in the Garden, Teachers, Philosophers, etc. This was an enjoyable read and I learned more about some of the famous, and not-so-famous garden writers. It has also given me a long list of authors to look for.
