I have to admit, while I was looking forward to reading Kiss of the Vampire, I was a bit nervous about the whole “dimensional” concept. However, after reading Kiss of the Vampire in one day, I am very happy to report that I really like this book and I definitely will recommend Kiss of the Vampire to paranormal readers.

The setting is in the modern world, however, supernatural beings have come out of the closest and are living right alongside the human population. The supernaturals take over a human body when they arrive, and that had caused quite a bit of chaos, and still does on the occasions that the rift opens and more supernatural beings arrive. The supernaturals have their own branch of law enforcement, they police themselves. Nix is a half-human/half-demon woman is a liaison between the human law enforcement and the supernatural law enforcement and she is currently working on a case that looks like a serial killer targeting supernaturals. Nix thought her life was going alright, until the new vampire investigator shows up, her ex boyfriend, Tobias.

Tobias is an old vampire and an investigator. He has been searching for the traitor who killed his king in his home dimension for centuries. The only time he ever deviated from that task was his relationship with Nix. Tobias had abruptly ended the relationship when he felt that his presence was causing Nix to turn to her demon side more and more. Not wanting to hurt Nix, he left, without much explanation. So, five years later when Tobias is assigned to the same case as Nix, sparks of both anger and lingering sexual chemistry fly.

The tension between Tobias and Nix is usually broken up by the funny, quirky character, Dante. The human investigator assigned to the case. Dante and Nix are friends, and I love his character. Dante is very laid back, accepting of the supernaturals, and dedicated to his job. The dynamics between the 3 characters are intriguing and I was quite entertained. As Nix and Tobias continue to work together, they have to take steps to resolve the past, and I was thankful that this took some time. However, if I was Nix, I would have made Tobias work a little harder. I felt that she let him off just a bit too easy.

The investigation and murder-mystery in Kiss of the Vampire kept the characters constantly on the move and interacting, and the mystery itself snared me deeper into the story. The story was well paced, well written, and interspersed with humor as well as drama, action, and heat. The sexual chemistry between the characters was hot and constant throughout the book. The relationship between Nix and Tobias developed at a reasonable pace, and I was very pleased with the outcome. On that note, the outcome was unexpected, but it fit.

By combining romance, urban fantasy, and investigation genres into one satisfyingly solid novel, author Cynthia Garner has gained a new loyal fan. I am very much looking forward to the next installment in the Warriors of the Rift series, I can’t wait to see what comes next for the characters, especially Dante. Paranormal readers, whether you like urban fantasy or paranormal romance, I recommend reading Kiss of the Vampire, there is a little of something for everyone.

Some are political exiles, some have left for religious reasons, but the majority were banned from their world for being criminals of the worst kind. Many see this as their second chance and attempt to reform and meld into society while others don't wish to give up their bad habits. It's the latter that the Council of Preternaturals hope to stop.

Nix de la Fuentes is one of the liaisons between the authorities and the Council of Preternaturals. She's part human and part demon which satisfies both sides of the spectrum. The politically correct term for what she is, is a hybrid and the incorrect term being half-breed. Nix has been called to the scene of a crime scene, the second in as many days. Someone appears to be targeting vampires and the kill methods suggests a preternatural was probably involved, but she's learned over the years never to assume anything without the proper evidence. Her job is to determine whether humans were involved. What she finds when she gets to the scene, is that an old friend she'd lost touch with is the victim. To make matters worse, her old flame, Tobais, whom she hasn't seen since he walked out of her life, is the liaison between the vampires and the Council of Preternaturals. Some days make you wonder why you even bothered to get up.

The world building Ms. Garner has done is phenomenal. While not every question I have has been answered, this is only the first in a brand new series so I'll remain patient and cross my fingers all will be answered eventually. With a quick pace and plenty of action, drama, and suspense, I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished the last page. *sigh* I love it when that happens.

Nix has not lead an easy life. Her father was a human and her mother a demon. It was her mother who inadvertently killed her father. She is what we would term a succubus and she sort of sucked the life force out of him while in the throws of passion. Oops! Don't you hate it when that happens? *smirk* Her mother abandoned her to her paternal grandmother who hated her. Nothing could tame the hostility her grandmother felt toward her demon spawned grandchild. Eventually Nix gave up trying to win her grandmother's love and became the difficult child her grandmother preordained her to be. That eventually lead to her living on the streets and gaining her street smarts and pickpocketing skills. Get her mad and she sprouts horns and a temper which can skyrocket to an astronomical level. Most human/demon hybrids Nix's age have lost their grip on reality and have gone insane.

Tobias Caine is a vampire who isn't like the other EDs. He came through the rift in pursuit of the criminal who assassinated his leader. He's been tracking his suspect for over a hundred years and plans to return to his home once he's apprehended him. Five years ago he broke things off with Nix. He never told her the real reason he did it.

Favorite quotes:

- "If you two are done with your bromance, can we maybe get some work done?" She looked at Dante. "I thought it was women who were supposed to be turned on by a guy's car?"

I am truly loving the characters and world Ms. Garner created. I liked the politics and prejudices that went on within that world. I loved how vampires emitted pheromones which could cause a girl's toes to curl without a single touch. It made me smile. The attraction between Tobias and Nix was undeniable and on the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, scored a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. Overall, I gave this one 5 of 5 roses. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Nix de la Fuente has the distinction of being a demon/human hybrid whose mother is a specialized demon known as a succubus. She works as a liaison with the regional Council of Preternaturals and investigates various crimes by working with Detective Dante MacMillan, one of the few humans who knows that she isn't completely human. An investigation into the horrific murder of a vampire who she knew personally brings her into contact with the vampire who broke her heart five years prior. Tobias Caine is a vampire who has been tracking the assassin who killed his people's leader for many years. His decision to break off the relationship with Nix five years ago was one of the hardest things he has done in his long life and he is not sure whether he will have the strength to resist her when they are forced into close proximity while investigating the series of crimes on behalf of the council. There are many factors impeding the investigation but undermining by their own support system is not anticipated and may cause the final irreversible end to their relationship if they don't learn to trust each other.

This was an interesting new twist on the origin of paranormal beings, the difficulties they could face when dealing with humans and the distrust and discrimination that being different engenders. The apparent strength and other benefits that come with paranormal powers can also cause handicaps and Nix has an interesting solution for controlling excess emotion with the use of tai chi. The sizzling carnal relationship between Nix and Tobias is contrasted with the rare bonds that Nix has formed with the human Dante and her friend Rufus and all is set against an intriguing murder investigation. A good start to an imaginative series that will continue with the tale of another colleague, Council Liaison Tori Joseph, in "Scent of the Wolf".

The only exception to this is Tobias Caine, who was a secret service agent who followed the assassin of their king through the rift. Only he returns a day too late, and his friend is among those killed in a series of vampire slayings. The Council has assigned him to find out and stop whoever it is that is able to kill a vampire, the most dangerous of the preternaturals. Arizona is the last place that Tobias wants to be. When he left five years ago, he needed to get away from Nix de la Fuente, the beauty that stole his heart. Nix is half-human, half-demon, and Tobias’s vampire nature would bring out her demon side. Since that usually leads to insanity in the half breeds, Tobias knew he had to stay away from her for her own good.

The time of the comet’s arrival is quickly approaching again, and humans are not happy knowing there will soon be another influx of the stronger preternatals. Five years after Tobias left town, Nix is now the human liaison to the Council, and she has been assigned to this vampire killings in case the killings are being done by disgruntled humans. She is not happy when Tobias walks onto her crime scene. She has finally moved on from her heartbreak, or so she hopes, but she is not ready to spend the time with Tobias necessary to solve this case.

While they investigate they slayings, they will also delve into the issues of their past and hopefully they can move on to the future.

This was a well written story, and the characters were very enjoyable, including Nix’s full-human partner, Dante. My one complaint is that the story seemed to end abruptly. Although the who and whys of the vampire slayings are given by the end of the story, there were still many issues that I felt were not addressed before the end of the story. This appears to be book one of a series and I hope that it will simply be a continuing investigation.

Nix has shown she can control her demon except when Tobias shows up then all she can think about is the feel of her fingers as they brush against his skin. He ran from her five years ago and now coming back is going to complicate everything unless she gets a handle on her passion, which never happened before. The murder they stand at now is the second attack where the victim was eviscerated. These murders have not been done by a human leading everyone to wonder who could have taken down a vampire. Tobias and Nix have to work together to figure out who or what is doing this, establish a motive, and stop the mayhem before another creature is killed. To further muddy the waters there is someone or something that has opened a small rift between dimensions. This is being used to send cryptic radio transmissions and perhaps more nefarious things no one wants to talk about.

Tobias and Nix have a past full of secrets but a present that seems to show they have each grown into better more controlled people. The desire to solve the crime is as strong as the need to be in each other’s arms and let the tenderness of their relationship smooth out the rough edges. They are determined to find the mysterious mechanism everyone seems to want so badly and figure out its’ power in all dimensions.

This book starts with a full-on blast of fascinating characters and an unbelievably amazing storyline and never stops going. The reader will love the interaction with all the characters because it is so well written you understand everyone’s dynamics to the story. This is something only a great author like Ms. Garner can do and do well. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.(less)

So the basis of this is that entities cross through the rift and inhabit humans, no-one knows exactly how it works but humans react differently and become either shifters, vampires or demons. Tobias and Nix have a history and, typically of this type of story, their break up was a miscommunication and they both think the other doesn't want to be with them ..... boy, are they wrong! They're forced to work together to solve this case which involves an old mutual friend.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this paranormal romance/mystery. This is my first encounter with Ms. Garner's work and I am looking forward to reading more from her. So I picked this book up not really knowing what to expect. I knew that it's a PR....but not much else. The story line read like a typical PR....so I thought I would throw in a light read between the dark UF series I read. I did not expect to like this book as much as I do.

Characters....
Nix is a half demon living in a world where no one really likes demons....so she plays up her human side and tries to keep the demon at bay. She is a very strong female lead, but not afraid to be emotional. That...more So I picked this book up not really knowing what to expect. I knew that it's a PR....but not much else. The story line read like a typical PR....so I thought I would throw in a light read between the dark UF series I read. I did not expect to like this book as much as I do.

Characters....
Nix is a half demon living in a world where no one really likes demons....so she plays up her human side and tries to keep the demon at bay. She is a very strong female lead, but not afraid to be emotional. That is a plus for me....most female leads either whine too much or they are so stoic they couldn't shed a tear if they tried. It's hard to find a good middle ground in PR's. Other characteristics of Nix....she is kind, caring, focused, determined, stubborn, loyal, loving and has a really bad temper. She is written more as a regular person than most paranormal heroines are. I liked that....she seemed more realistic.
Tobias is the lead male and he is a vampire. He is not as likable as Nix in my opinion. I think it is because he comes off too much as an Alpha Male. Don't get me wrong, I like me some Alpha Males....but it seems that is all there is in PR's. For once, I would like to see someone a little more....I don't know.....normal? Back to Tobias.....His characteristics are strong, focused, determined, kind, loving and completely dominant in every situation. He makes it known to everyone that he is in charge of this investigation and do not cross him. It almost seems like that ones that are supposed to be in charge of him really aren't. He is the typical dominant man. He does, however, have some soft, tender and emotional moments.....but it seems out of place for him. It also grated on my nerves every time he called Nix honey. It just didn't sound right coming from him....and he said it in like every other sentence when he was talking to her. Redundant much?
Dante is a detective with the human police force. He has been working with Nix on several cases for a little over a month now...and he has a huge crush on her. He knows what she is a doesn't care. He is kind, funny, strong, determined and very loyal. Honestly....I would have rather seen a relationship with him...but I think he gets his romance in the next book.

Nix and Tobias' relationship....
Nix explains that they dated for a year and then Tobias just left her out of nowhere. It is 5 years later and she is still hurt and confused. Things only get worse when he arrives back in town to help with a case she and Dante are on. She tries to act relaxed and normal...but her emotions are twisted up over him and she keeps working herself into a frenzy that in turn triggers her demon side. So she is a walking ball of turmoil trying to keep herself in line. For Tobias, he keeps trying to play it cool too but it isn't working out for him either. He is just as emotionally messed up as Nix and can't hold it in any longer.
Finally, Tobias gives in and makes a move and the dance begins. It is back and forth between them....He doesn't want to trigger her demoness, and she doesn't want to have her heart broken again. Eventually...as planned...they come together and decide they'll find a way to work things out in the end.

Plot....
Vampires are being murdered.....every day. There doesn't seem to be any link between each victim....but things just aren't adding up. Tobias, Nix and Dante are out together, hunting for information and not having much luck at all. Of course, a convenient little tip comes their way and things start adding up quickly. So it is a hunt to find out why these vamps are being killed and who it behind it all. While hunting down the baddie, one member of this Scooby Gang gets seriously injured and life hangs in the balance. So, the race is on and it is a long road to the finish line for this crew.

Overall....
This was not a bad story all in all. No, I didn't partiularly like the male lead....but I don't really have any say so in that department. He was at least tolerable. The mystery was what kept me page turning. It was written really well....even though that little tip came a little too easily and with a lot of perfect timing. Either way, it was a good in between read for me. I will get the next book if Dante is the lead male....he was just too precious :)(less)

Nix is an interesting mix of demon and human, she must fight her demon side into submission everyday in order to keep her sanity. Tobias is a very old vampire...Cynthia Garner has created 2 very likable main characters who could have been angst ridden and depressing but her use of common sense and humor has made these characters connect with the reader emotionally. The sexual tension felt throughout the book makes even the most hardened PNR fan shiver. Nix borders on feeling sorry for herself because of her loveless childhood but CG only skims that depression and doesn't allow Nix to wallow in it. Tobias comes across as controlling as only a very old vampire can be but again CG tempers that with a realization that Nix is a strong female and can think for herself. CG's secondary character of Dante MacMillan is wonderful, his humor and irreverence bring a lighter feel to the story and blends well with both Nix and Tobias's personalities.

I loved the creation of the world in this novel. Cynthia Garner's take on how preternatural beings coming to earth is unique and it in it self feels almost like a character in the book . The plot moves quickly and has enough action to counter balance the romance and makes this a great read for everyone. If Cynthia Garner can build on the strengths of this novel, the series will become a force to be reckoned with in the Paranormal romance market.

A sold 4 out of 5 stars for this up and coming author with her unique characters blend of action and romance. I put this in the *must buy now* side of the 'to be read' ledger.

I must admit that anything that includes the paranormal and romance in it, sign me on board! So you can imagine how many different 'Vampire' books I have read over the years and a lot of them aren't really worth a mention... but this definitely is! Sexy, dark, with a crime mystery right in the middle- definitely not your average run-of-the-mill Paranormal.

Nix is working a case of vampire killings for the paranormal council, and is shocked when her ex-love-of-her-life shows up as her new partner. The last thing she wants is Tobias being around and pulling her demon half to the surface, but Nix is determined to stay on track and sane.

Tobias left Nix for her own good, despite how difficult it was. Now that he is back and working along side her, he doesn’t know how he was ever able to resist her. When the case takes Tobias and Nix all over the state, things heat up between them to epic proportions. But when an unexpected player enters the game, Tobias is going to have to make a difficult choice: save the woman he loves, or go after the one person he has been hunting for as long as he can remember.

I absolutely adored this book. It came at the perfect time for me. I have recently read quite a few romance books that were full of angst and heartbreak and sorrow. I needed something that was a little less complex, a little more sweet and believable on the romance front, and Garner delivered. I was so happy to see two adults dealing with their relationship in a sane and reasonable manner. They had a second chance at love, and they both refused to let the opportunity slip away, despite any arguments or disagreements. It was the breath of fresh air that I desperately needed in my reading list.

On the paranormal front I also enjoyed the twist that Garner added to her story. Instead of the standard vampires, shifters, demons and other-wordly creatures, Garner created a world that twisted the myths, added a science fiction aspect and left me feeling as if she shook my world upside down. It didn’t feel as if I was reading the same old vampire story.

I also really enjoyed the characters. They weren’t over-the-top, they didn’t have any super-special powers that set them apart, instead they were just your average vampire and half-demon. I can’t even tell you how much I suffered along with Nix, especially with all the prejudices against her from the paranormal council for being half-demon. There were some moments I wants to give her a huge hug and tell her that everything would work out in the end.

I loved that Tobias wasn’t shy about his feelings for Nix, both with her and around others. He was quick to defend her, both to the council that snubbed her, and to the demon who tried to hurt her. He was passionate and loving and willing to go the distance to show her that he cared. It was sweet and wonderful and everything I could have hoped for. He was an alpha hero that was easily brought to his knees by his leading lady. What’s not to love about that?

All in all I loved the first installment of the Warriors of the Rift series. I’m anxious to read the follow up books, find out more about the cast of characters, and see how the overall series plays out. I wish we would have had a little bit more of a resolution to the overall series arc – things are left VERY up in the air – I’m sure that each book will only wrap up parts as we go. For romance readers who are in the mood for a sweet second chance love story with no drama and angst, with a little paranormal mixed in, you must pick this book up!

Nix and Tobias used to date and were pretty serious when all of a sudden Tobias broke up with Nix without any rhyme or reason. Nix has never been able to get over Tobias and the way he hurt her. Since he left, Nix has found ways to control her demon and has submersed herself in her work as an investigator for the council.

Tobias has never been able to stop thinking about Nix and the love he has for her. By leaving he was actually trying to protect Nix. While they were together it seemed as if she was unable to take control of her demon half and once the demon takes over there is no going back to being a regular human. The person literally goes crazy and becomes completely evil. When Tobias is called in by the council to help investigate a string of gruesome vampire murders he comes face to face with Nix, the one person he was trying to avoid.

At first watching these two interact with each other was exciting. There was a lot of tension and chemistry mixed in with a lot of hurt. Both are still so in love with the other but in the case of Nix, she is still so deeply wounded by Tobias leaving unexpectedly that she is just full of anger.

When we get about half way into the story both characters seem to make a drastic change. All of a sudden they are both back together and everything is completely fine. Umm, hello? How did this happen? They never really even discuss what happened in the past and somehow everything is forgiven and swept under the rug. Also, both are supposed to be these tough characters but they both became so cheesy with each other. Everything became so cutesy and it embodied everything that I hate in romances. The hero constantly calls the heroine honey and the heroine becomes this drone of a woman who doesn't think for herself.

I also hate the the romance seemed to take a backseat to everything else that is going on in the book. Don't get me wrong I like action and suspense in my books, but I just hate when the romance takes a backseat to it. I like there to be an equal balance. It just seemed like chapter after chapter would pass and nothing is happening. Then all of a sudden "Bam" they are couple. I feel as if I'm missing something.

I'm not sure if I'll be picking up the next book in this series. While I did like this world and I do like the characters that are going to be in the next book, I'm not sure if I can deal with another story like this one. I read books for the romance and if the next one is anything like this one was I know I'll be very disappointed.

Having been rejected by everyone that she's ever loved, she sets out to prove to that she is more than just a human/demon hybrid. It's a daily battle for her to control her demon, but she takes steps to make sure her humanity prevails. She relies on her friendship with her partner, Dante and tai chi to keep her grounded and centered. But when vampires start dying in a gruesome manner, Nix comes face to face with the one person in her past that will test her resolve to maintain her humanity as well as the hardened shell she's put around heart.

Tobias Caine has returned to Scottsdale after leaving five years before. The only reason he returned was at the request of a friend, but when she's found murdered the council puts him in charge of the investigation. That puts him in direct contact with his ex, Nix. Tobias left because he was worried about his affect on Nix because her demon side was coming out more and more. Though he loved her, he thought leaving her would be for the best. Now, just being near her makes him understand that maybe he never quite gave her or them the chance they needed. He has to figure out a way to turn off his emotions towards Nix and find out who is behind the gruesome killings.

Luckily for us, the love and lust Tobias and Nix have for each other is much bigger than the reasons they split. Tobias is a vampire you will be placing on your vampire boyfriend list. From the moment he "walked" in to the story, he commanded your attention. He's good at hiding his emotions, except with the one person he loves and that is what makes him so damn attractive.

Nix is a tough cookie. She'd figured out a way to love herself and control her demon (wouldn't we all love to be able to control our demon??). Even when faced with having to deal with Tobias, she figured out a way to be somewhat professional while she breaking inside. It take a strong person to be able to do that, especially when you're still in love with that person.

I loved the storyline with the Rift and I can't wait to see where the next story takes us. Since I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of Natchook, I'm sure we'll see more about the radio transmitter he was attempting to use to create another Rift. Pretty sure what he's up to is no good, but he seems to be spectacular at that.

An awesome start to the series and leaves me waiting with bated breath for the next one.(less)

Things that worked for me: I really liked the secondary character, Dante who is the human cop working on the case with Nix and Tobias - I liked Dante's sense of humor and so I am glad to see that he takes the lead in the next book. I thought that the different take on origins of paranormal species had potential - paranormal creatures are actually criminals who were disembodied for their crimes and their essence forced through a periodic dimensional rift into our world where they possess a dead or dying humans. For reasons unknown, some of theses extra-dimensionals (EDs) become vampires, or shape shifters or elves or demons or other supernatural creatures.

Things that worked less well for me: the development of the romance felt really forced, there was a tendency to toss in minutia – I don't care much about bedroom décor in the midst of a love scene – and Nix especially has lusty thoughts at really inappropriate times – at the scene of a friends murder - and the leads actually making out just minutes after leaving the scene of a brutal murder was pretty bad too. Also I had questions about the world that weren't answered – since demons are created by EDs possessing a human, how do they end up with half human children?

Bottom line? Once things finally get going and the pair finally start uncovering the reason for the murders and decide to give each other another chance, the story does finish well and I give the author Cynthia Garner, who also writes as Sherrill Quinn, credit for trying to offer a new spin on the origins of supernaturals, even though there are a few kinks to work out for the next Rift Warriors book, Secret of the Wolf.

Vampires, shifters and demons. Oh my! A fantastic start to a new paranormal series.

If Law & Order ever did an episode featuring creatures that go bump in the night, this book should be the basis of it. It starts off with a gruesome murder. Like white sheet over the disemboweled body so onlookers don't throw up kind of gruesome. (Do you hear the strains of the opening theme? Yeah, you're welcome.)
