people who are way above Gide and Camus
"sexual torment and corrosive jealousy"... should be fun.
Wasn't as much fun as advertised. This is the first Mishima novel I've read and he was 25 when it was published. Definitely reads like a bitter guy in his early 20's coming up with a manifesto. A really bright kid who looking to out alienate the Coolly Alienated black clad set in high school would go nuts with this.

Mishima often writes about revenge. He was a pissed off bastard. A queer communist stuck in Japan. These revenge stories, however, are delightful because they are so wicked.

Mishima's best work in my opinion, a deeply textured potrait of a woman and her inner life in post-war Japan.
