I recently read about this book on a blog about children's books, and it is presented as being for children. I do think , however, that its subtlety and poignancy will be best appreciated by adults. Perhaps it would be a good book to share and discuss with older children. The book was published in French in 1992, with the English translation appearing in 1993. It is the (fictitious) tale of an Englishman who purchases an intricately carved 'scrimshaw', which the seller claims is a giant's tooth....more
What an unusual little book. I found it in the children's section of Rogers' Book Barn, a really amazing bookstore out in the woods near the town of Hillsdale, NY. I am on vacation and reading The Lost City of Z, and this children's book, with its exquisite illustrations, each a miniature world, echoes the major themes of that book - the curiosity and passion of the English amateur naturalist/explorer of the Victorian age, the mystique of exotic, uncharted lands, contact with other cultures, oth...more
