Gathered around the fire during a power outage from a hurricane, ‘Lulu’ Coombs relates a story from her early adulthood to her grandchildren. Her older husband’s son, Jimmy, was close to Lulu’s age and they shared a powerful psychic connection. To the citizens of their small town, Jimmy led a romantic life of adventure, up to and including enlisting in the military and going off to war. His homecoming was a major event to the family and townspeople, and Jimmy didn’t let them down.

I was introduced to this author by another author. I found this short story to be good, but not memorable. I thought it suffered what much of the short stories written by full length novelists suffer from and that is a long build up and then a very quick ending. I do plan on reading a full length novel and seeing if my beliefs stand.

At last I've read one of Hall's book!!!

I liked the story and the atmosphere of Lulu's kitchen, I can picture her there among her grandchildren speaking them softly of things of the past like my own grandmother used to do!

"If there are tears in that laughter then so be it. Just don't be sorry anymore, Lulu, for it's joy, not sorrow that sets the dead free."

I liked this short story. I don't know if I believe in the type of bond the author was talking about, but it was a touching tale.

A very short read ( I wasn't expecting it to be that short!) but a pleasant one, especially having just finished a longer but definitely more boring book.
Nice for a change!

What a thoroughly great story. I don't want to dissect it and ruin the magic. It's short; it's wonderful; just read it; okay. Where's my kleenex?
