One easy way to answer "Why read this book" is: to know how to read Avant Grade art.
Yet a more favorable answer would be; to learn how to think surreal, how to see a different, new dimension, one where art takes more forms than humanly understandable, or one that isn't only based on automatism, but surpasses that to the point where the very definition of art, base, limits, and all such vocabulary, is defined by the artist himself, by the uniqueness and the singularity of himself. This is not a book as much as an essay, really. Following soon after his seminal work, The Order of Things (Les Mots et les choses), Foucault's 1968 essay not only offers a insightful study of Magritte's famous Treachery of Images (Ceci n'est pas une pipe), it also provides an introduction to the French philosopher himself.

Foucault is a difficult read. His concepts and language require much of the reader, making re-readings and multiple contemplations frequent requirements. This book was quiet interesting. When looking at Rene Magritte's Painting of a pipe and underneath this painting in neat script is written "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" which is french for "This is not a Pipe." You begin to wonder what this means. It may just be surrealistic art but Michel Foucault really shows us his deep thoughts about this painting and its meaning. Yapıkredi Yayınları'ndan çıkan çevirisinde analiz edilen bazı tabloların küçük (ya da mümkünse büyük) resimlerinin de olması gerekirdi. Eğer kitabı okurken bu tabloları görme imkanınız yoksa açıklamaların çoğu oldukça soyut ve havada kalabiliyor. É um livro pequeno que se lê rapidamente, mas que é complicado de digerir.

um pequeno ensaio que tem dois capítulos geniais: 1) o caligrama desfeito, em que foucault propõe três leituras do quadro de magritte fazendo uma ponte com o conceito de representação e 2) os sete selos da afirmação, em que ele dá voz a cada elemento da pintura (o cachimbo encerrado, o cachimbo que voa, o enunciado que nega e o quadro dentro do quadro) para estabelecer relações entre os conceitos de semelhança e similitude.

Rene Magritte turned art on its head by combining words and images in a way that at first seems whimsical or poppy but then as you continue to sit with it allows you to weaken your stranglehold on what you have constructed as reality.

Foucault somehow managed to see and grasp that process at work and manages to describe it and delve deeply into it in a intellectually beautiful and pun-filled way.

I hereby confess that I didn't understand most of what Foucault was talking about in this book.

First, lemme quote an excerpt of a nice review I found:

Foucault and myself have a generally strained relationship. I'm not exactly sure why. I think that it may have to do with some extremely graphic descriptions of torture. The book did not have any such descriptions making it seem to be getting off on a much better foot. That is until it just starts getting off on itself. For a short little book on a fascinating set of paintings mostly by Magritte, this is pretty good and has very carefully been translated with many useful endnotes. My major complaints are that the wonderful paintings graciously provided as plates in the back of the book are in black and white instead of color (oh picky me) and that the endnotes were much more difficult to access than footnotes would have been. Not a light read, but can be read on the fly. What I truly like about this book is the close relationship between the core ideas of Foucault's analysis (specially his insight on the art as representation) and the current tensions between art and digitalia. The letter exchange between Foucault and Magritte is a perfect addendum. A must read.

Amusing how Foucault does all sorts of exercises addressing such simple matter. He explains the Magritte's painting from several angles. This stuff stretched my imagination a bit. Of course Magritte was masterful creating things to throw people out of common sense. Such an impolite artist. Provoking us to think!

I wont rate this book. I dont KNOW why I even bother reading philosophical books. I always end up feeling and reacting the same way, which is something VERY similar to this
I'm sure there has been several interpretations of this picture from readers and, Foucault himself. However, what came to me when I read the book and looked at the picture and/or title, is just that. It is not a pipe, but a picture of a pipe. No matter how it's situated, the size, frame, the artist is telling you it is a picture. Oftentimes, we overthink everything and fail to see the obvious.

However, one can only guess when it comes to Foucault. I believe his belief was for none his belief to

i don't know what to say about this save it might make a fair counter-part to other more complex/colossal foucault books. this one is light-hearted, long-winded, obsessively charming, and particularly slim. i could really care less for magritte, tho his collected paintings and set of letters to foucault in the back are good. nothing to read straight through. dash through a short essay or two on the fly whilst hammering through foucault's studies on the prison-system, the history of sexuality, th ...more

This was like reading an anatomy book trying to understand how love works.
ever wanted to know why magritte's pipe isn't? this is foucault's explanation, an interesting depiction of the unspokeness of representation as decoded and emphasized in margritte's paintings. this is a brief investigation into the infinite space between words and images. reminded me of a comic book artist friend - who told me that the most important part of a comic illustration was the space (the gutter?) between two panels. this is where the mind must create the undepicted connection that link ...more
I still have a 500 Belgian Franc note which celebrates René Magritte. Now, besides being the renowned surrealist painter, he also was a skilled counterfeiter who honed his talent for the Résistance while Belgium was occupied. He didn't hang his hat though when forgery was no longer patriotic, and went to jail in 1949.
A counterfeiter honoured on legal tender? Ceci n'est pas une pipe indeed.
I look forward to reading this book, Foucault is not known as an art critic.
