Excellent book from start to finish. If you liked Catherine Cookson or Joan Jonker type of reads then this book won't disappoint you one bit.

Its not a straight forward storyline that you know what the ending is going to be,and I'd love to see a follow up of this book.

It only took me 2 days to read this, or should I say, nights at I read mostly on the evenings and before going to bed.

It took me two days to read this book, it's currently 8am and i stayed up all night in order to finish it. It's an exciting journey, extremely well written, amazing - the ending was a teeny bit predictable but that's what made it awesome.. some parts i was uncomfortable - you can only understand it you read it - but i absolutely recommend it!

Not the type of book I would usually read but after reading this I have already purchased another one by the same author. I would genuinely say this is one of the best books I have ever read. When reading it you get lost in that era.

Another brilliant book. Beth has a miserable life and thinks it will be better when she is forced to marry. Instead she marries Edgar who is controlled by his mum who wishes him to be reunited with her family fortune, which was lost when her mother married a gypsy and as the Lord had no heirs, Edgar was next in line. They are overjoyed to find Beth pregnant but when her twins, James and Daisy, are born a week apart the mother starts the gossips going by saying they must have been the result of ...more

I wanted to like it, I really did - but I didn't. I dislike books where the cover, title and synopsis draws you to read about one character and I then find that the character's main story does not even start until mid way through the book. Discovering this pet peeve (and wishing to have a book to read) I invested my emotions in her mother, only to find she also disappeared for a large part of the story. I like to like the characters in the book - or at least understand what drives them to do ...more

The book almost became too sick to continue near the end there.. Thank goodness for nosey characters.

Otherwise, I liked the story but the only word that came to mind when I finished was "eh". If Ms King's books are all like this, I probably won't be reading another title.

This was such a great read. I did find the ending hurried. I would have been happy for another 100 pages or so. Is there a sequel? I hope so.
