I'm surprised and happy to say that Pandemonium managed to exceed my expectations. Delirium was okay, but it also was a bit slow sometimes and as a dystopian it was a little bit flat. But Pandemonium was a fast-paced dystopian, filled with lots of action that kept me on my toes and even gave me a few surprises I didn't quite expect.

If Alex doesn't make it...then my heart will implode. I really hope that Pandemonium has the following or I'm not sure I'd make it through this book:

-Alex is alive, in prison, and not "cured" (because no one better touch a hair on his head!!!)
-Lena WAITS for him, gets stronger, and *drum roll* rescues him
-Lena doesn't fall in love with some other dude with pretty eyes and kissable lips or I'd SOS him.

I almost had a heart attack when I saw the cover!!!! :) So beautiful! Delirium is one of my favourite books ever!!! The story and Oliver's writing... Gah I can't even explain what it did to me. I finished the whole book in one sitting which should mean something. I just pray for one thing. I'm positive that Alex is alive. I'm not sure if he'll have the cure or not. Just finished "Delirium"..my eyes are so swollen from crying I can barely see the screen..I was so sad and cursing Lauren Oliver for making such a beautiful story and screwing up the ending but seeing "Pandemonium"..It's hope..i'm sure Alex isn't dead ..she's gonna go back and find him in the Crypts just like her mom and she'll go back and save him...I don't know how I'll be able to wait 9 months but I hope it's worth it !

This book takes place "now" and "then". This confused the heck out of me for the first couple chapters probably because I didn't pay attention to the chapter's titles I was just so excited to get reading. "Then" starts in August and is everything that takes place from the minute Lena left Alex and ran into the wilds. We get to see every heartbreaking struggle as she found a new place to stay and met new people. She isn't sure whether she wants to live or die but she wants to be strong for Alex....more This book takes place "now" and "then". This confused the heck out of me for the first couple chapters probably because I didn't pay attention to the chapter's titles I was just so excited to get reading. "Then" starts in August and is everything that takes place from the minute Lena left Alex and ran into the wilds. We get to see every heartbreaking struggle as she found a new place to stay and met new people. She isn't sure whether she wants to live or die but she wants to be strong for Alex. She tries to imagine him and that she is getting stronger for him. Her thoughts of Alex continued to bring tears to my eyes throughout these scenes as well as all the hard struggles of life in the wilds. It is definitely not easy living free.

"Now" is in March and takes place in New York. Lena has joined the resistance, has a fake identity and is living among the cured. She is attending DFA(Deliria-Free America) meetings and rallys, keeping an eye on all the activity. People are more aware of the invalids and deliria now and want to give the cure at a younger age. They want to risk people dying from receiving the cure in order to lessen the chances of infecting the world. Although some are against this and don't want to risk death so the rallys get a bit crazy. Lena is told to keep watch on the son of the head of the movement, Julian Fineman. But during a big rally they both end up getting kidnapped. Lena has become really brave and strong now. She fights for their escape but there are lots of twists and turns along the way. I loved the action and couldn't put the book down. Finished it in one day! Lauren Oliver is amazing at keeping me emotionally invested and captivated.

But......there were a few things I personally didn't like about this book. I think the whole new love interest/love triangle cat is already out of the bag since it is mentioned in the description but all I'm going to say is pull out your Team Alex flags because I'm sorry to say it is definitely going to get ugly in Requiem. I was also really disappointed with it. The reason I loved Delirium so much was the fact that it was such a beautiful love story about sacrifices being made to be together and in Pandemonium I just feel like Lauren Oliver took a big ole crap on it. I'm just really sad with the story going the love triangle route. I am also really upset with a few details to it. They are in the spoiler button since they are a bit more spoilery so read at your own risk.

My last disappointment was that this book has one of the most horrible cliffhangers ever and I am willing to sell my soul to get my hands on the next book!!! It was an evil evil evil ending!!!!! After Delirium I think the author could have went a little easier on us. Don't worry we will be back for Requiem, you didn't need to do this to us! Once you read it you will understand and hopefully come back and freak out with me. If you have already read it and want to rant and discuss, direct message me, seriously!

I have to say, I’m impressed. Not so much happy, but definitely impressed. It takes guts to twist a story as much as Oliver has done and pull it off so well. She took a big risk with this book by playing on the reader’s emotions, in a way that can so easily lead to frustration and anger. After the excruciating cliffhanger of Delirium, all I wanted from this book was some answers. Unfortunately for me, the answer I wanted the most was not revealed until the final page. Up until then, however, I was both in awe of the book and deeply resenting it.

My feelings are as conflicted as they could be. Delirium left such a profound impact on me and I blame Oliver for my unreasonable attachment to the characters - or one character in particular: Alex. It’s for this reason that I couldn’t, no matter how hard I tried, actually enjoy this book. To read a story that was so completely different to what I had wanted to happen was as painful as it could be. I’m afraid to say, I struggled to continue at times – not because it was terribly written or even lacking an engaging plot, but purely for the reason I felt cheated. To have waited so long for this book and then to find out, on the final page, that I am in for several more months of painful waiting is not at all what I wanted from one of my favourite authors.

Personal preferences aside, I relished the skill behind this book. How could I not, when it deserved attention and recognition? Yes, I may not have been particularly pleased with what happened (or more what didn’t happen), but I won’t hold that against the ingenuity and talent of the author. There’s no doubt about it, Lauren Oliver is an incredibly gifted writer and she shows that in Pandemonium in a way that is perhaps more evident than in Delirium. Lena’s journey is split into chapters of ‘then’ and ‘now’. While we are following her in her new position in the resistance, we are also transported back to the time straight after Lena crossed the border. Little by little, the past catches up with the present, and little by little, the secrets are revealed. Oliver handles the transition between each chapter with admirable ease and so expertly manipulates the story to fit around this ingenious approach.

I can’t deny that the writing was beautiful. It always is in a Lauren Oliver book, but I noticed it a lot more in Pandemonium due to my need to focus on something. The pacing is perfect; both gentle and careful to help craft the melancholy tone that hangs over this story. While we are given the poignant scenes to make us feel tearful, Pandemonium also delivers its fair share of heart-stopping action. I assume, if you did not have the same problems I did, being enthralled by the plot from start to finish is likely. The biggest revelation, the biggest twist, is delivered with a punch through a single word on the final page - the very last word of the book.

Once the final page had been turned, Pandemonium left me with a strange mix of hollowness and euphoria. The ending, as shocking and almost cruel as it was, left me feeling hopeful for the next book, Requiem. Until then, however, the process of counting down the days will not be a fun one, that’s for sure.

I was initially resistant to reading Pandemonium, sequel to last year’s Delirium, despite the fact that I’d picked up a copy for giveaway during a Lauren Oliver signing at Oblong Books. I hadn’t much enjoyed Delirium–though I appreciated Oliver’s prose very much, I found the novel, overall, to be quite bland. Both protagonist Lena and love interest Alex mostly bored me, and their puerile acts of rebellion–which included illegal downloading of music and going to raves–weren’t enough to distract me from the fundamentally implausible premise.

But then I saw Pandemonium described on a goodreads review as “unbelievably better” than the first volume and decided to give it a chance.

And I’m glad I did!

Don’t get me wrong; Oliver’s premise remains quite difficult to believe. In her talk at Oblong, Oliver described the Delirium series as “alternate history”–closer, I suppose, to Never Let Me Go than to Brave New World. Conceptualizing this universe as one that runs alongside to ours, rather than existing after it, helped a bit in locating myself in the setting. It certainly explained the oddly contemporary references, which made little sense otherwise. However, I’m still not sure if the novel’s alt-history setting was well explained enough in the text itself. Certainly, there seem to be few clues to that effect, and it’s difficult to imagine when our society diverged from this one to produce Lena’s.

However, Lena herself grows significantly over the course of Pandemonium. Whereas once she seemed meek, bland, and frustratingly nondescript, now she’s truly strong. It’s not the cartoonish strength often found in these novels. Instead, she seems to have grown logically from her former identity as an obedient member of her society to someone quite capable of standing on her own and making her own choices.

Oliver tells the tale of Lena’s journey through two interwoven narratives. One is set “then”–just after Lena leaves her home for the first time after the events of Delirium–and “now,” later, when Lena infiltrates New York City as a member of an underground rebellion. It’s a neat conceptual trick (Oliver played similarly with form with slightly less success in Delirium, inserting fictional primary source documents about her world between chapters) and successfully keeps the narrative moving at a brisk, even exhilarating pace. I was surprised, and refreshed, after Delirium, to see how quickly the story moved, without sacrificing Oliver’s lovely stylistics.

Gone, too, was bland love interest Alex–his mantle taken up by a boy named Julian, who was far more vivid in his characterization and background. Julian was believable and sympathetic. His childhood ailments, his beliefs, his depression, all rendered him a complex and interesting love interest. I was able to understand Lena’s affection for him here much better than I was for her first beau.

Pandemonium is not a perfect book. As I said, the premise remains shaky, and there’s not one, but too cheesy and obvious plot twists near the novel’s end. But it’s a more-than-worthy successor to Delirium. Lena’s concerns are now given weight, importance, compared with the frippery of the first novel. She’s vividly characterized, as is her romantic foil. And her story is still told through Oliver’s gorgeous stylistics. I’m glad I took a chance on it, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Pandemonium even to those readers who felt lukewarm about the previous volume.(less)

My God. That ending. That had to be the most awkward "awkward moment" I've ever read in a book. EVER.

But then a bit later on, it hits me how hilarious the situation Lena's gotten herself in and the laughter starts.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that this book doesn't end up with that ridiculously overdone love triangle between three characters even though you KNOW who she's REALLY going to end up with no matter what...But also...I REALLY freaking hope Alex isn't dead, that would just be too much, too mean, too just plain WRONG!!

I can't wait for Pandemonioum, I can't wait for 2012, t'was soooo effin' long! Delirium was so bittersweet and the impact of it was so strong. It really affected me emotionally, and I admit that I've been crying for (hours?) a long time after Lena's last words. Would Pandemonium make me feel the same way about Delirium? Ooh , I can't wait!

P.S. The cover was nice, and yes, it looked like the paperback cover of Delirium. I hope that the story would focus more on Alex (which is too bad because Lena is the main protagonist of the series) and I hope that this would be more exciting and mysterious as Delirium :)

I hate that I love this trilogy. Seriously.

Lauren Oliver made me hate and love her at the same time again. Her writing, the characters, the plot, and, oh my gosh, even the cliffhanger at the end... they are just perfect and flawless. I've just finished reading this, and I can't seriously wait 'till Requiem. Gimme that book now!

Lena became such a matured young woman here at Pandemonium. She became independent, stronger both physically and mentally, much wiser and reasonable. I can't say that she's gotten over her stubborness at all, but she's really grown up well in this book. At Delirium, she is hesitant, scared and doubtful, but in the end, she became strong because of her love for Alex. Here at Pandemonium, she became a part of resistance, met her fellow invalids like Raven, Tack, Hunter, Squirrel, Bram, especially Blue, whch Lena reminded her as Grace back home. She goes back to "Zombieland" and there, she meets Julian Fineman, son of the DFA leader, and falls in love with him. No need further explanation, that's too much of a spoiler. You can see me stucked in the moment right now, I said earlier that I hated love triangles... and Lauren Oliver tolerated that hate. I LOVE IT AND I HATE IT AT THE SAME TIME! Okay, who's up for Team Alex or Team Julian? Huh? C'mon, for those who red Pandemonium, I know that you definitely loved Julian too, he reminds me of Alex everytime. I loved the scenes where you can totally feel a wave of deja vu, I know you do too! And the twists, oh my gosh, those twists! You should definitely read this one, like pronto! ♥(less)

Lena cannot love someone else. That is a fact. I wonder if Lena will ever find her mother? She has to! I can't believe that Hana wouldn't go with her! Hana is the one always complaining, but in the end she's all bark and no bite. But I still love her. Oh, Gracie surprises everyone! Can't wait to hear about her again! Who's Raven? Did Alex die? I doubt it,think how much hate mail Lauren Oliver would get. But it's still a possibility. Don't think about it. To sum up Delirium in three words these would be them: Heartbreaking, Beautiful, Breathtaking. Can't wait for more.

I fell in love with Delirium as hard as Lena fell for Alex, and when the ending hit, my heart tore into two directions. One, I wanted to jump inside the book and throw Alex over the fence; second, I practically cried and pushed Lena into the woods. It was tragic like Romeo and Juliet, and I can't wait for Pandemonium.
