Anyone familiar with college baseball has heard of the prestigious Cape Cod League, where the top collegiate players hone their craft playing against each other in New England. In this book, Jim Collins follows one team, the Chatham A's, for the entire 2002 season. We get to know some of the personalities on the team: Jamie D'Antona from Wake Forest, Tim Stauffer from University of Richmond, Tom Pauly from Princeton, to name a few, and hear their thoughts on baseball, the stresses of being a ...more

Anyone with a passion for baseball.
As an avid baseball fan (of the Sox, the red kind) spending summers on the Cape and taking in a Cape League game in Chatham, Brewster or Cotuit was heaven. Needless to say, I was excited to see the book on the book shelf at the store and had high expectations.
While the it would never be able to fully capture how incredible it is to see those kids play their hearts out, it does as best it can to paint the picture for people to read. I read it long enough ago that I don't remember specific det...more

Collins gets it. Baseball people have a certain way about them, and Collins obviously is one of them; he also knows how to write about them. This book—an in-depth and endearing look at the 2002 Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League—shines with the polish of good baseball writing about a great baseball subject. The players and team staff come to life, as does the ebb and flow of a summer on the cape. The poignancy of this moment in time, in these specific lives and in this specific base...more

A great book that scratched both my MLB itch and my college baseball itch; fascinating not only because it's about the Cape Cod League, but because it is also about how the best college players make it (or don't) in the major leagues. Collins writes with a great sense of both place and baseball, and the three players he focuses on are all charming, intriguing kids.

This book is about the Cape Cod Baseball League and highlights the Chatham team. The book profiles three players, on of whom is from Connecticut. Having knowledge of the league (which uses wooden bats), I figured it would be a good book. The author is a "former athlete" and does a nice job capturing the ambience of Cape Cod in the summer.

If you really love baseball this is a book you should pick up in February as a prep for the up coming season. Collins is a talented writer and the Cape Cod league is a great back drop for a classic baseball story. The focus of this book is on the Chatham team which is loaded with ACC talent.

This follows one of the Cape Cod league teams through the season so you get to know each of the players. Very well written. I read this together with my husband and we both loved it. We went to a few games after reading the book and it was fun to see the fields they spoke about.

Great book for any baseball fan. The author does a great job of simply capturing the beauty of the game, especially at its simplest - when the players are still amateurs playing in small towns around Cape Cod.

This is another one I read primarily because I had heard about it, and it seemed appropriate while I was living on the Cape. Its a pretty quick read and definitely interesting if you're a baseball fan.

About the Cape Cod Baseball League. A great book for any baseball fan! Collins focuses on the kids that do and do not make it to the show - and all of the athletes and coaches are facinating.

This one satisfied my baseball craving. It touched on everything from steriods to swing techniques to bonfires on the beach. A great look at the Cape Cod league.
