My aunt gave this to me to read..I of course hate Dan Brown but I figure it'd be fast and I could thank her for it, mention some interesting tidbits that are no doubt sprinkled throughout the book for idiots, and feel good about family duty. There is not one paragraph that is close to some acceptable literary decency. In 2 pages he found it ok to mention coffee 5 times. The formula is pretty simple:
Big Mystery + Male Protagonist + Female Protagonist + Code to Solve + OMG TRAITOR WITH TWISTED MOTIVES = Best Selling Novel.

And it's worked, so I guess we can't hate on him too much. There are people who swear his books are the best thing they've ever read -- I certainly wouldn't say that. But they are successful and I have to confess, even I like them, and when it comes to books I am Picky with a most definite capital P.

Another fast-paced thriller dealing with the NSA from Dan Brown. I found this novel to be right on par with Digital Fortress and thought that it was a very well-written thriller. From start to finish Deception Point takes the ball and runs with it like any other Dan Brown thriller. After I read The DaVinci Code, which I liked, and Angels and Demons, which I loved I put the other Dan Brown books on my wish list. I was recently sent this one as part of a bookring and decided to read it.

I was recently sent this one as part of a bookring and decided to read it.

Rachel Sexton works for the National Reconnaissance Office as an intelligence officer. She is also the daughter of a Senator currently running for President. Her father's main offensive, and a very popular one, against the incumbent President is to attack the huge amount of NASA funding. Rachel is barely on speaking terms with her father, believing him to be totally corrupt, but is still worried she is being used by the President when he asks her to verify an amazing find by NASA, a find which will settle the arguments about NASA funding for ever. Reluctantly agreeing to view the find Rachel is whisked off to the North Pole. What she finds once she gets there takes her breath away. However, she quickly learns that nothing is what it seems, and, with two civilian scientists, is soon fleeing for her life. Stranded on an ice berg they are rescued in the nick of time by a nuclear submarine, but once back in the US their attempts to expose the plot show them that they can trust absolutely no one...

I ended up enjoying it but found that it lacked the fast pacing that the previous books had (especially Angels and Demons). Only the last third of the book equals them in the action department. Till then things happen but there's no sense of urgency wether in finding the clues or running away from the killers. The plot was nicely done, the find was surprising but I suppose one of the reasons I enjoyed the other books was because they dealt with historical people and monuments. Here it's meteorites and ocean life I don't find that as interesting. It's really me and not the book but sometimes a thriller is so nicely written that can sell me any subject, that was not the case here. Rachel and Tolland were really nice characters and as is usual in the Dan Brown books they give in to their attraction in the end.

Grade: C+, entertaining but forgettable.(less)

This is a real page turner. Quite an easy read that pulls the reader in with a fascinating plot, the occasional twist, and an energy to his writing that keeps one thinking where the story is leading to. Dan Brown manages to paint a vivid picture of the characters and surroundings, without laboring on details. Highly recommended.

Before I read this book I didn't used to understand why people hate Dan Brown so much? Why they call him the most over rated writer? After reading this book I have the answer.

Dan just doesn't want to keep it straight forward and simple. He wants to go extreme with everything.
The plot is extreme - A NASA discovery about a meteorite suggesting extraterrestrial life.
The characters are extreme - The Senator who is a candidate for Presidency and his daughter Rachel Sexton, Michael Tolland – an oceanographer and television celebrity-scientist, Corky Marlinson – A world renowned astrophysist, William Pickering – Director of the NRO, Lawrence Erkstorm- Administrator of NASA, Marjorie Tench- Senior Adviser to the President etc... and most importantly The President himself is a important part of the story.
The science is extreme. Dan Brown introduces you with equipments, tools, vehicles, planes, ships you have never even heard of.
And this extremeness goes on and on in everything he writes in the book.

The thing I hated the most in the book was the science. I can take the plot into consideration once, the characters could be taken into consideration as well but speaking honestly I didn't understood a single science in this book and I am pretty sure that anybody who is not a part of NASA won't be able to understand this. I even doubt that some science he has mentioned in the book even exists, that might also be a fiction along with the story. Wherever there was science mentioned I just went through the parts of the book without getting anything into my head.

I don't know what to write, I just hated this book. I have not liked any of the two Dan Brown book's ever since I read Digital Fortress. And this book surely has to bring an end to my Dan Brown reading. I loath myself for having buying this book.
All I would suggest to Dan is just keep it simple. Big Mystery + High Official Characters + Code to Solve + OMG TRAITOR WITH TWISTED MOTIVES doesn't necessarily make a book successful. The basics remain the same, people should understand what you are writing.(less)

“Everybody lies” is a phrase that keeps being repeated over and over again in every episode of the famous American TV series House. Most people believe in the truth of this phrase, however I am not one of them; or at least I am not, except when I am reading any of Dan Brown’s novels. So far I have read all his novels except for “The Lost Symbol;” hence, I could say that I am considerably aware of his style of writing and the general framework of his novels. But still I have to admit that every time I was taken aback when the moment of truth came in any of his novels. Personally, the concept of truth in any of Brown’s novel exceed the general meaning of “not lying,” it goes on to represent the opposite of illusion, namely it is more attached to the concept of reality; it is concerned with such question as: is what you are seeing, experiencing, being told is indeed the truth or are you being played by like a toy in a marionette show? So although all Brown’s novels kind of agree on the same framework and style of storytelling, each one of them is an enjoyment in itself and a masterpiece in one, or several, particular field of knowledge. Talking about “Deception Point,” I have to admit that although it is represented as a novel, a thrilling, amazing, rich and interesting one to be fair, it is also a brief textbook about the ocean world, the meteorites, the space battle, NASA, new weapons, the political battle during presidential elections in the USA, the human psychology, etc… quite a lot of stuff if you asked me, and that is what I like the most about Brown. He is not only a novelist but a transmitter of knowledge, enjoyment and an enhancer for open-mindedness and for thinking outside the box. The two main lessons that I learnt from this novel are simple but deep. First, never blindly trust what you are told regardless how much you trust the person you tells you, but always question and seek the truth of things by yourself. Second, don’t rush about judging people, especially those with high responsibility in the community, because around everyone of them there are a bunch of hidden players who work on arranging the game as they like, but if the people responsible are indeed up to their responsibility, they will eventually overcome the hidden players and be worth of the respect and the duty that people attach to them.(less)

أغلب كتابات دان براون تشعرك أنها كتبت خصيصاً بهدف تحويلها إلى أفلام، وقد تعاظم هذه الإحساس لدي مع روايتي "الحصن الرقمي" و"حقيقة الخديعة" بشكل خاص، الأولى من خلال المشاهد الختامية فيها والثانية من خلال شخصية "الممثل المساعد" كما أحب أن أسميه، وهو مساعد البطل خفيف الظل، الذي يبرع في استدرار الضحك من خلال تصرفاته الخرقاء وتعبيراته التلقائية وهو بالطبع أكثر شخصية تتعرض للضرب!

لا أعرف إن كان ذلك الأسلوب قد تسرب إلى كتابات دان براون بشكل طبيعي أم أنه تعمد تلك الطريقة لإقناع المنتجين بتحويل المزيد من رواياته إلى أفلام.
"شفرة دافنشي"، "ملائكة وشياطين" وأخيرا "الرمز المفقود" لم تحتوي على نفس هذا التوجه السينمائي، ربما لأن طبيعة الرواية ونوعية شخصية البطل (روبرت لانغدون) الذي صار معروفاً لدى الجمهور، تجعل هذه الروايات لا تحتاج إلى بناء شخصياتها بهذا الشكل السينمائي الصريح، لا سيما أننا بعد 3 روايات صرنا نفهم شخصية "روبرت لانغدون" جيداً، وتكشفت لنا تركيبته وأعماقه، فلا داعي لإفساد الرواية بوضعها في قالب التصوير السينمائي المميز للسينما الأمريكية، والتي أعتبرها، في رأيي الخاص، شديدة الضحالة فيما يتعلق بإظهار عمق الشخصيات وتركيباتها النفسية.

فيما عدا ذلك لابد لي من الاعتراف أن "دان براون" هو موهبة حقيقية.. فعندما قرأت "شفرة دافنشي" لأول مرة، انبهرت بطريقة السرد وغزارة المعلومات، لكنني ظننتها مجرد "ضربة حظ" بالنظر إلى نوعية الموضوع الشائك الذي تناولته الرواية.
لكنني بعدما قرأت باقي أعماله، ورغم اعتراضي على الأسلوب السينمائي الضعيف والساذج الذي يعمد إلى استخدامه في بعض الأحيان، إلا أنني لازلت مبهورة بقدرة دان بروان على السرد المشوق (أسلوب شهرزاد كما أحب أن أسميه، حيث يتوقف في نهاية كل فصل عند نقطة شديدة الإثارة والتشويق)، وكذلك بغزارة المعلومات في مجالات متعددة ومتباعدة من الأديان إلى الرموز إلى العلوم الطبيعية إلى علوم الكمبيوتر مما يجعلني أقدر الجهد الفائق الذي بذله الكاتب في البحث والدراسة قبل أن يبدأ الكتابة، هذا إضافة إلى قدرته الفائقة على مزج الواقع بالخيال حتى لا تعود قادراً على التمييز بين الإثنين، والأهم قدرته على مفاجأتي في نهاية الرواية بما لا يمكن أن اتوقعه في كل مرة، فرغم أنني اعتدت على أن أبعد الشخصيات عن الشبهات في روايات دان براون، هي غالبا العقل المدبر لكل المؤامرات التي تتمحور حولها الرواية، إلا أن النهايات تظل غير متوقعة إطلاقاً، وشخصية الشرير، باستثناء رواية واحدة فقط من رواياته، لم أفلح أبداً في استنتاجها من خلال الأحداث وحتى السطر الأخير من الرواية.
الحبكات المتقنة، والأسلوب المقنع الذي لا يدع مجالاً للثغرات، والمعرفة الموسوعية التي تجعلك مندمجاً في الرواية تماما.. كلها من أبرز خصائص أسلوب دان براون، والتي تقنعني بانتظار رواياته القادمة بفارغ الصبر وأنا اعرف يقينا أنني ساستمتع بها.(less)

In all books the main male character is a white, good looking very intelligent man with a broken heart from loves past. My Thoughts:

Although this book is classified as a thriller, it was a thought provoking thriller rather than an edge of your seat ride. I was a bit surprised at who was behind the plot so that sort of threw me which is definitely a good thing. Typically I usually end up with a vibe before the reveal, and I had the vibe, but I wasn't entirely sure why this person would do it. No motive that I could think of at the time.

Both The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons were written better and were more thrilling for me, Deception Point was still worthy of my time. I hope to meet Rachel Sexton again in one of Dan Browns next adventures.

The plot seemed to be a bit repetitive and it felt a bit contrived, but there were only moments of that feeling, it wasn't held through the entire book.(less)

Deception Point didn't really get interesting until about 170 pages in, and I almost gave up on it. Despite this, I'm glad I didn't, but it isn't as good as the Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons. The parallels with his other characters in these books as well, annoyed me quite a lot. I came down really hard on Dan Brown's ANGELS AND DEMONS, but this 'earlier' book is really quite an enjoyable page-turning ride.

Halfway through and I haven't 'thrown it against the wardrobe in anger' yet.

Couple days later: this book was a really quite good, entertaining, nail-biting read.

i'm not a big fan of the "thriller" genre, but an ex-boyfriend left this book in my suitcase once and I decided to give it a go. it was an extremely quick and easy read, and was entertaining enough for me not to throw it out.

like most books of this caliber, it contains the following:

a rugged, sexy, recenlty widowed or divorced guy with highly specialized job.

a super smart, beautiful woman who has a great job (lawyer, doctor, politician, etc) and who doesn't know how pretty she is.

Why you ask? Hell people, I read Clive Cussler and David Gibbins—what do you expect? These books are like desert (at a fancy restaurant—not my house). You read them for the sugar content and comparison. The cliché goes, Don’t judge a book by its cover. However I judge a book by its author. And clearly, this book can speak for itself. This book has been one of my rare instant-buy books. Dans ce roman, on retrouve la "lutte du bien contre le mal". Certains personnages sont exécrables, et bien que les choses se retournent contre eux, on se rend compte de la bêtise des humains, de ce que certaines personnes sont prêtes à faire pour un peu de pouvoir ou d'argent. As ever, Mr. Brown never fails me to give pure entertainment.

I used to be a fan of Robert Langdon only. So after reading The Da Vinci Code, I never bothered reading Deception Point and Digital Fortress.

But it happened, that I was able to buy this cheap copy of Deception Point somewhere...might as well give it a try. Let's see how Dan is good without Langdon in the plots.

Yes, I actually read a Dan Brown novel. It was recommended to me, and the subject matter was decently interesting. At 736 pages, with 133 chapters (plus the Prologue and Epilogue), this was a decent sized undertaking, but it goes by very, very fast - this was the fastest 736 pages I've ever read. I've never read any books from the "supermarket checkout aisle thriller" genre before, so here was a good opportunity to spend a day or two, just to say that I know the genre. The characters in this novel are a prime example of this. The reader is given either too little information about the character or too much background noise to make their actions seem ‘plausible’. Pasts are created out of the necessity for plot advancement which is adequate at the best of times, and unbelievable at the worst. But this only touches lightly on the bigger issue: That of the most important part of the book! One which changes EVERYTHING! !

The author sets it everything up to be changed. He points you in one direction and gets you thinking in one way only to be tricked. As a joke you’d play on a younger sibling so you can laugh and say “Made you look!” So instead of twists and turns, you get tricked and fooled. Things are never as they appear and WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!!!

This would have been cute and interesting if it appeared in one of his books. But it’s becoming a M. Night Shyamalan formula when you expect it. This is my second Brown novel, and more enjoyable of the two. But it followed the same formula. When you expect the change…FOREVER!...it loses all impact. The reader rolls their eyes and says “Yeah, ok, so that’s what it was. That would have been great to know 500 pages ago.”

It’s all bait and switch; smoke and mirrors.

This would be an added bonus if it didn’t get in the way of the plot, characterization, and atmosphere. It seems these quintessential parts of the novel take the back seat for the bait and switch technique. Characters are flat, the plot becomes uninteresting, and everything falls apart to become a big ‘catch the bad-guy’ chase scene.

Taking my personal opinion of Mr. Brown aside, the three main point of this book only has one going for it. The narrative was very easy to get through. The bait and switch technique does serve to keep the reader going. In this face, I couldn’t put the book down against my better judgement. But the other two points: Plot and Characterization fell so far off the table that I won’t look back fondly on this novel.

In sum: This book is akin to a juicy fruit stick of gum. For the first five seconds it’s fun, light, and very easy to chew through. But the flavour disappears too quickly after that, and you are left with a flavourless wad which is very hard to chew.

I’d recommend this book to those who would rather watch a movie than read a book. That seems to be Brown’s target audience. The only problem is: The audience are watching movies and not reading books.(less)
