One of my most beloved children's books - which sadly has water-damage from the flood we suffered back in Winchcombe, England around 1966 - and, happily my Mother saved for us and we still have it in our library. It's a cautionary tale to treat animals, toys, household possessions with care - very un-P.C., so very European (since French and by Colette, a bit less harsh in the end compared German fairy tales) - love the illustrations.

So ... for a wild-goose-chase completely goofy project I was working on but have mostly shelved, I needed to know the name of a French-language opera that would be suitable for children. Cruising Wikipedia, I found L'Enfant et les sortileges, more usually translated as "The Child and the Magic," but as you see here. Colette was the pen name of the French novelist and actress Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. She is best known, at least in the English-speaking world, for her novella Gigi, which provided the plot for a famous Lerner & Loewe musical film and stage musical.
