Fire in the Hole: Stories
Overall this collection is good but it just wasn't long enough to be a GREAT collection. Plus, the inclusion of two western stories was a mistake. Don't get me wrong, I love his westerns.. but they belong in one of his western collections (perhaps "The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard"?) instead of here.
The highlight is the novella "Fire in the Hole" which brings back the guy from Pronto and Riding the Rap. Good story but not g...more
In his more than three dozen books, Elmore Leonard has captured the imagination of millions of readers as few writers can. A literary icon praised by The New York Times Book Review as "the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever," he has influenced many contemporary writers and is known for both the quality and the accessibility of his writing.
In this collection of new and recently published short fiction, Leonard demonstrates the superb characterizations, dead-on dialogue, vivid atmos
There's a little bit of everything here with loads of Leonard references scattered about. Like tattered, sweat-stained denim in any given Elmore Leonard story, the tales here conjure images of grime, regret, cheap booze, and instantaneous grabs at tiny-effort/huge-...more

The stories have a lot of Leonard's trademark outlook on life, and it's a hard one. Fire in the Hole has a bit of it to, but I like the character. So, as with the Keller books by Lawrence Block it s...more
A note on the edition: this collection has been recently re-released under the title _Fire in the Hole_ and with a label designed to catch the eye of fans of FX's "Justified." Thus, in the interests of full disclosure: I might claim to be a "long-time fan of Elmore Leonard"--dating, in my case, back to those wonderful years in the mid-to-late ninetie...more
I've wanted to read 'Fire in the Hole' since I started watching Justified, which is one of my favorite shows on television now. So when I saw the short story collection it was in at a book sale for a dollar, it was an easy decision to make (despite my repeatedly telling myself not to buy more books while I have so many sitting at home unread).
I loved the hell out of this story, even after knowing the b...more
The range of styles is also wide, from western stories to modern LA to not so modern Harlan County. I think you would call this an Elmore Leonard primer, either as an introduction or as an after dinner drink for those like me who have read almost everything he has wri...more

Anyway, I'm an Elmore Leonard fan, so I thought I'd check out the source material—a short story called "Fire in the Hole" that's found in this collection. Many of the stories are concentrated Leonard-style moments—there's one that's...more
My only criticism is that I wanted more; a couple of the stories ended much to abruptly for my liking and I would consider them short sketches as opposed to stories. There are two novellas are around sixty pages each and even those left me wanting more from...more
