In her foreword, spot.ph Editor-in-Chief Myrza Sison quotes the author's first blog entry, explaining how the title came about:

"Starlet Stella Strada was said to have left a suicide note containing the words: "This is a crazy planets," perhaps a mistranslation of the melodramatic Tagalog idea of 'Baliw na mundo.' She's obviously not a big fan of Tears for Fears, who could've neatly summed up her sentiment in two words: 'Mad World.' But that would be ignoring the sad, desperate, if accidentally comical poetry of 'crazy planets.' Like Shakespeare or Sylvia Plath by way of Jimmy Santos. What does Strada's immortal quote have to do with this column? Absolutely nothing. One thing is certain: this space will be devoted to suicidal nymphets with grammatical dilemmas and grand conspiratorial coverups. On second thought, maybe not."

If you're living in the Philippines and you don't know Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra, stop reading this and go burrow back under that soft, warm earth. De Veyra is a veritable jack of all trades: front man to the cliquish jazz rock band Radioactive Sago Project, poet, novelist, essayist, product endorser, and media's current go-to maverick who is not afraid to express his opinions about almost all imaginable issues this side of the planet. And he does it with subtle and seeping dose of humor and irreverence that endear him to many readers and viewers in the country. (I went to the National Book Store at SM Megamall and they listed Crazy Planets as number three bestselling locally published book this month.)

In Crazy Planets, de Veyra trains his bespectacled gaze (he started wearing 600+ grade glasses when he was in Grade 2 because he suffered from extreme myopia ['I Can See Clearly Now']) on Kris Aquino, the Pacquiaos, the Senate, PUV drivers, public toilets and public signage; he pines and waxes nostalgic for old Pinoy movies ("Leon Guerrero and Geronimo occupy a warm, shining place in my grease-clogged heart." ['Guns, Goons, and Gore']); he extols the virtues of AM radio ("AM radio is an aural kaleidoscope no iPod can ever match." ['AM Radio: No Static At All']); he turns into a gushing fan ('Rico, Beybeh'), and pays tribute to NU 107 "The (insert "fallen" here) Home of New Rock" and the great Filipino movie villain Pacquito Diaz; he champions snappy philosophy ('Ang Tunay na Lalake, Walang Abs'; 'Umasal Lamang ng Ayon sa Ganda'...) and shoots playfully against fashion and cultural trends, and other issues he deems worthy of space and time.

Overall, de Veyra does a great job of expressing himself and, by extension, his opinions, curses and all, are shared by a lot of people who follow him on TV and online and print media. That he does not really look the part of a celebrity is perhaps an added incentive for all of us who really aren't celebrities. And while he is now famous in his own right, with a book that appeals even to a baby, de Veyra is simply a man who thinks critically and knows the value of wit. Hopefully, these virtues are also shared by those who admire him or he'd be just another sad fad, and this, indeed, is a crazy planets. (less)

I've only heard about Lourd De Veyra through friends, because most of my friends are big fans of him. I've seen him every now and then on his TV5 segment, Word of the Lourd , and I have read some of his articles in his Spot.ph blog. But I was never really one who followed his stuff regularly. I wasn't really 100% excited to attend his book launch when I was invited, except that I can't really say no to a free, local book. Unfortunately, the launch happened on the night that tropical storm Falcon made an ocean of Manila.

I was glad when the publisher still sent me a book for review because despite my being a not-so-much-of-a-fan, I was curious about the book. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how nice the book looked. Okay, it wasn't just nice, it was quite beautiful for a local publication. My fellow bloggers and I often complain about the print quality of the local books here, but The Best of This is a Crazy Planets is far superior than the others. The paper quality is nice, the cover design is pretty and illustrations/artwork were there for every article. I am delighted to see that it was affordable for its quality, too - P195 (less than 4 USD) is a pretty good price to pay for a book that looks this pretty.

That price is even more justified once you read what's inside. Like I said, I've only read a few of Lourd's articles online, so I was pretty new to his writing. Lourd De Veyra offers a funny, oftentimes sarcastic but very real commentaries on Philippine current events, people, culture and even showbiz. I found myself giggling and having to hold it back whenever I'm reading this in a public place. Some of them, I can't really relate to, some of them, I agree with, some of them, I just find really, really funny. Underneath its wit and sarcasm, Lourd's articles show a lot of truth in the current state of our country. It's not always pretty, and sometimes I feel bad when I realize that it is the ugly truth about the Philippines. But even so, Lourd never ever showed a hint of not liking his home country despite this truth (at least, that's the impression on me). It's like he writes it all out, shrugs and then says, "This is a crazy planet." Or planets.

Why buy this book when you can read it online? Well, if you're not enticed by the beautiful quality of this book and its relatively cheap price, think of it this way: you can read his articles even without Internet, even if you're in the remotest areas in this crazy planet we live in. And I think that's pretty much worth it, right?

I kowtow to the Lourd.

I was not really an avid fan of Mr. de Veyra - until I finished reading this book. I’ve read some of his works online and from what I can conjure they are either concurred or abhorred. No ‘sakto lang’, no ‘pwede na.’ It’s either you hate his commentaries or love it.

The book is basically a compilation of his blog entries in SPOT.ph - a site which I’ve only read/heard of now. It’s equally thought-provoking as it is diabolically funny and intriguing. Lourd transgresses the paradigm of writing. He writes what’s on his head and surprisingly, he does it in a dangerously articulate fashion. He pens them no holds barred. He allows his readers to feast on constellations of beautifully threaded train of thoughts interspersed with occasional bouts of bloody cuss words - which forgive me for saying this, but honestly added to the panache of the manner of writing he’s trudging on in a particular sentence. To say that this book is hard to put down would be an understatement. On second thought, I think it is, in its quintessential form, impossible to put down - down your system.Because based on what Lourd let me taste, I found swallowing the truths this book encapsulates a gruelingly herculean task. It’s difficult to swallow that big chunk of societal disgrace which I know I have somehow contributed to.

Though I found myself occasionally raising an eyebrow while reading this (his love for K is unfathomable), my laughter was unbearably difficult to contain that I had to practically cover my mouth in fear of waking up the person sleeping next to me.

This book is insane. The author is a genius. If you haven’t read Lourd, your reading life hasn’t really started yet. You might think I’m overreacting but give this book a try and maybe you’ll understand me.

I might as well stop here. I realized parading this ‘book review’ with superlatives wouldn’t do this book any justice. You need to experience it to really know it. And oh BTW, thank you beautiful Cess for lending me this book.

And I say to Lourd, AMEN.

Lourd's essays on (pop)socio-cultural issues give a witty and more contemporary view to the same questions people have been asking since nineteen-kopong-kopong. I'm in my late teens and most of his old-school references go over my head, but I appreciated everything inside.

A few of my favorite essays are "Ang Tunay Na Lalake, Walang Abs", "Noynoy to Kris: Shut Up Little Sister", and "Pornucopia".

So goes one of many of Lourd de Veyra’s satirical statements in the collection of essays “The Best of This is a Crazy Planets” from his Spot.ph blog. In the 30 essays compiled in his book, you’ll find yourself enlightened by the Word of the Lourd (which is also the title of his short television segment where he delivers his commentary on social and political issues in his witty, deadpan ways) from the award-winning socio-cultural/political pundit that is Lourd de Veyra.
And for the faint of heart and the satire-challenged, I suppose you are going to have a difficult time appreciating Lourd’s words. He hits the bull’s eye of discomfort and ugly truth in his commentaries about fame and the Pacquiaos, hipster expressions that must never again see the light of day, the senate and the 2009 Hayden Kho/Katrina Halili sex scandal, the dwindling world of the Filipino action film, our society’s baffling lack of hygiene, the incomprehensible hell taxi and bus drivers of Manila bring to this world, the spotlight-hogging of the attention whore known as the President’s youngest sister, masculinity, and even jejemons.
Spot.ph Editor-in-Chief Myrza Sison perfectly captures Lourd de Veyra’s writing in her foreword: “His grasp of the political situation and current events is so good he can delivers his opinions in a funny way that just lends to what most news in the Philippines is—ridiculous.” She further writes: “he makes spot-on pronouncements about the status quo in self-effacing, man-on-the-street, “nagtatanong lang po” way, never offensive (unless it’s his intention), frequently hilarious, always endearing.”
For example, he describes Kris Aquino as someone “for whom no barrier exists between the public’s right to know and her private life” (as the mainstream media seems to remind us these past few days) and someone whose “cerebral cortex [is] directly connected to her mouth”. And when lamenting about irresponsible drivers of public vehicles, Lourd writes: “I think we should all start regarding driving as a responsibility, not an inalienable right.”
In this image-saturated world, Lourd de Veyra goes for the jugular and pokes fun at what we have held all high and mighty: celebrities and image. He concocts a mixture of wit, frankness, and a devil-may-care attitude that may not always be easy for you to swallow. But when you do, it’s smooth on your throat and you find yourself wanting more. By taking cue on Pinoy pop culture and politics, Lourd de Veyra dissects every topic with such wit and compassion that, sometimes, it really hits home–hard.

I personally enjoyed this book so much. His take on some of the Filipino absurdities are just so spot on; from our perverse fascination and disdain on the lives Kris Aquino (‘The Unbearable Heaviness of Being K’) and the Pacquiao family (‘Keeping Up With The Pacquiaos’), as well the preposterous Senate hearings on the Hayden Kho-Katrina Halili scandal (‘Sex and the Senate’) down to our overly sensitive church (‘Daring Acts of Blasphemy’) and our lack of discipline on the road (‘Wala Ngang Wang-Wang, Meron Namang..’) Lourd just perfectly articulates what we sometimes fail to see, or sometimes too oblivious to notice. His words are so authentically his own combining equal amounts of flair, gritty humor and Filipino charm. You’d be surprised to read with all the hilarity that he could actually quote Oscar Wilde and Heraclitus without being out of context.

It’s a really really REALLY smart and hilarious take on Filipino culture. The entire book is quotable, I kid you not. In fact, it actually prompted me to go and read his other entries that’s not included in the book straight out of his blog. We need more people like Lourd. His sardonic, no-holds-barred and outrageously smart and wicked sense of humor is what this satire-sensitive country truly needs. Needless to say, I bow down to this Lourd. 5 out 5 stars :)(less)

Book #14 for 2012: My copy is signed by the author. I have met my Personal Philosopher (yes, capital P). Felt so humbled and blessed in the presence of the Lourd (and not in a blasphemous way). That moment with him last December was priceless (sorry, fan-girl in the house. Was able to hog his attention for almost 5 minutes, yey self-high five!). Lourd is just so smart and witty, full stop.

A collection of some of his best essays on Spot.ph, The Best of This Is A Crazy Planets is one humorous, albeit tongue-in-cheek commentary on the nuances of the Philippine pop culture landscape. At times biting and all the time witty, this book gives more than a peek into the happenings of street culture, or at least how De Veyra sees it.

Slow clap for the Lourd. I like the way he gives his commentaries (from Manny Pacquiao to Taxi Drivers). Brash, yes but definitely true. I think every educated and non-educated Filipino who cares about the country should pick up this book. He's being funny and sarcastic but there's an underlying wake-up-call to all, including Kris Aquino.

(A bit) shallow note: For a book that's priced P195, the quality is great!

Lourd De Veyra's writing is "make-you-laugh-out-loud-obnoxiously-in-public" funny, sarcastic at times but also a very spot-on insight about the Philippine society and culture. His writing is also very quotable. Some of my favorites are:

Truly the best of his works! he's brutally honest yet hilarious at the same time.I like his choice of words and the wisdom he left his readers to ponder upon.The book encompasses various points in everyday filipino life from politics,hierarchy,words that should die,the origin of his name,certain celebrities he either like or dislike,transportation even urinals!

Lourd de Veyra is really fantastic, hands down! A big mind opener for a book and each essay never failed to make me laugh and agree with him more. I will forever cherish the facts that "The Best of This Is A Crazy Planets" shared. Maybe I can read it 10 times or more and his essays and it's impact will never change. I have immense respect for Lourd de Veyra now. All the issues, the absurdities, the unjust way of life here in the Philippines were delivered clearly with humor. I can say no more -...more

Hindi ko matapos kasi napagod na ako. Ang daming isyu/chika ng taong 'to. Pati ba naman si Baby James problema pa niya? Dapat magtake siya ng How to be Witty 101 a.k.a pag-aaral kung ano ang kaibahan ng witty sa offensive. Mas nakakapagod basahin 'tong libro niya kesa sa pagmasdan ang billboard niya sa EDSA na naka-salawal lang at may fake na abs.

Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra is a multi-awarded Filipino musician, poet, journalist, broadcast personality, and activist who first became famous for being the vocalist of Manila-based jazz rock band Radioactive Sago Project.
De Veyra graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Santo Tomas.

As literary influences, de Veyra cites Beat movement writers such as Allen Ginsberg...more Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra is a multi-awarded Filipino musician, poet, journalist, broadcast personality, and activist who first became famous for being the vocalist of Manila-based jazz rock band Radioactive Sago Project.
De Veyra graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Santo Tomas.

As literary influences, de Veyra cites Beat movement writers such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. He explains, speaking as a fellow at the 45th UP National Writers Workshop:

“What I look for in poetry is an uneasy kind of energy. An energy that is already beyond the configuration of words and then assumes a density that is akin to music. At the heart of it all is jazz. Jazz, the manipulation of breath— the unleashing of breath, the holding of breath, the destruction of breath. The most basic unit of jazz is the swing and the breath. My primary influence is the Beat movement and I think my initial fascination for them was rather hinged on the wrong reasons: the radical visual arrangement of lines on the page, the profanity and the absurdity that struck my mind as a welcome relief from the stultifying archaisms of 17th-century English poetry force-fed on us by high school teachers. Here was, at long last, literature that spoke to me. It was in sympathy with the energy of free jazz and punk rock records that I was listening to at that time. Through the lyrics of punk rock and hardcore records, I had an inkling of how words can be more powerful than a guitar amplifier cranked up all the way to ten. My exposure to the poetry of Ginsberg and Kerouac opened me up to the world of possibilities. And I am obsessed with the idea of ‘possibility’. ‘Possibility’ is what art is all about. It is the constant wrestling with forms, styles, and structures. It is the idea that something better is always out there. It is about discontent. It is about discontent with the safe, the middling, the accepted, and the acceptable.”
He has thrice been a recipient of a Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature - A Third prize in essay (English division) in 1999, a second prize in the same category in 2003; and a first prize in teleplay (Filipino division) in 2004.

When the hardcore punk band Dead Ends ended their 4 year hiatus, he became the band's lead guitarist in 1994, thus making Dead Ends a four piece band. Then, they recorded their comeback and final album, the influential Mamatay sa Ingay(1994), it was a different sound than their past materials, it was more of a crossover-thrash approach. When Dead Ends disbanded in 1996(because of Jay Dimalanta's passing). He also became a member of Al Dimalanta's new band Throw, with his brother Francis playing the bass.(less)
