The last thing Addy Davidson wants is to be on a reality TV show where the prize is a prom date with the President's son.

She's focused on her schoolwork so she can get a scholarship to an Ivy League college, uncomfortable in the spotlight, never been on a date, and didn't even audition for it.

But she got selected anyway.

So she does her best to get eliminated on the very fi...more

First Date was a fun, refreshing and delightful read. I'm a sucker for a celebrity-guy-ordinary-girl pairing so when I saw the synopsis it instantly caught my interest. I enjoyed it thoroughly especially the concept of reality TV show. This is also a Christian book so there were parts that discusses about it but it wasn't really overly done so it's okay for you to read it even if you're not a Christian. The writing was also good and fast paced so it was really an easy read.

The story...more

This is an awesome read!! It's loosely based on Esther from the Bible, but set it today's world, with reality tv, paparazzi, the internet and more. Addy is such a relatable character. You can't help but root for her. Fellow reality show contestant Kara is a great source of comedy and strength for Addy during their time on the show and the other characters add so much to the story. I loved the comedic elements to the story as well. Simply put this book made me smile, which as stressed as I am at...more

Addy Davidson doesn't want to be on TV. Let alone a reality TV show that the prize is being the prom date for the President's son. But she is. And then she meets Jonathon, the President's son, and sure he's cute, and now she only halfway doesn't want to be there. But evidently she's exactly where God wants her and the sooner she figures out that, the happier she'll be.

Let me just say that I loved this book. I got it in yesterday and started reading it about 3 hours ago. The story is a loose re-t...more

There is something so enthralling about the story of Queen Esther. The frightened orphan girl turned gorgeous woman… the desperately lonely king… the scores of women fighting for his attention … the impending genocide… the moment where the orphan turned queen can save a nation - that is if she can save herself from her own fears.
But unlike other Bible stories that writers have been able to so aptly transfer to more contemporary settings, Esther seems to defy modernity. I mean, how do you get th...more

FIrst Date was an excellent book. It really touched my heart, and it sent a great message. It was basically about a girl named Addy that doesn't want to go on this dating show where the prize is a prom date with the presidents' son, but she is forced to by her principal and her uncle. THey want her to reach out, and they think she will be the perfect fit in the show. She gets there and she makes it clear to everyone that she doesn't want to be there, and immediately she has millions of people sc...more

In this modern retelling of the Biblical story of Esther, Addy Davidson is about the only girl in America who doesn't want to be on a reality TV show where she has a chance to compete for the chance to go the prom with the president's son, but she's chosen by her principal and asked to represent her school. She'd rather be at home, doing homework and trying to get into an Ivy League School, but her uncle, raising her after the death of her missionary parents, encourages her to consider that this...more

I think this might have to be my new favorite book. I loved it! It taught me a lot about God's love and that I need to rely on His plans for me, not the plans I have for myself. Esther is my absolute favorite book in the Bible and she is my role model when it comes to finding the strength and the courage to share my faith with others and the fact that this story was roughly based on Esther was so great. I was really impressed. I usually stick with Melody Carlson's work when it comes to Christian...more

This novel is a modern retelling of the story of Esther, from the Bible, and I think the story would have been better if it wasn’t.

If this had just been a cute, cheesy, Christian, realty show story, it would have been way better. But with needing to keep to the story of Esther, the plot became terrible. In the real tale of Esther, death is present. But in this fuzzy-feelings retelling, there is no scary almosts, no threat of death, and so the entire plot seems kind of foolish and silly. Also, in...more

"First Date" is a young adult Christian romance novel, though I suspect younger teens would also like it. The story is loosely based on the biblical story of Esther. The influence was strong enough I recognized the connection, but the story didn't always translate well into a modern setting.

For example, Addy strongly objected to being entered in this competition, but the adults had already entered her without her consent. That didn't seem realistic, nor did some other parts of the story. I also...more

When I browse the summary, I expected a reading of the same ilk as watching "The Bachelor" on TV. That is a story dripping with clichés and romantic scenes full of sloppy declarations that make you roll yours eyes as they appear dull after being used so many times …

So why choose this book? Because like most women, I was raised with fairy tales and a little romance, even through a scripted show, can help you get your mind off your work by dreaming about the handsome prince on his white horse.

So I...more

Why I picked it up: I needed a religious fiction for my reading challenge and a friend recommended this one. She said the main character reminded her of how I might have been at that age.

When Addy learns that she was chosen by her principal to represent her school in a reality TV program to win a date to prom with the president’s son, she is not pleased. Addy does not want the spotlight. She is happy with her quiet life and just wants to get good grades so she can go to an Ivy League college. Th...more

My review for BookSneeze -
First Date by Krista McGee was a bit cheesy, but fun to read. It is based around Addy Davidson, a high schooler chosen to participate on a reality TV Show “Book of Love” to win a date with the President’s Son, Jonathon Jackson. She doesn’t want anything to do with the competition so she decides to be honest and tell Jonathon up front that she hopes to be one of the first ones to go home. Of course this backfires and the viewers end up loving her, which doesn’t make the...more

I had not heard of this before I received a review request, but the premise sounded intriguing. Plus it was recommended because I had read There You’ll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones, which I loved, so I decided that this was worth a read. While it did not blow me away, I still found it to be a cute, fun read with a good message.

The opening I found to be somewhat unrealistic. Addy is kind of just placed into the competition without her consent, which seemed rather odd. The set-up of the competition w...more

Addy Davidson has been chosen as the representative for her school in the new TV reality show, The Book of Love, with the prize being a date to the senior prom with Jonathon Jackson – the son of the President of the United States. Addy is an orphan, bought up by her Uncle Mike, and although she is a Christian, like many of us, she is nervous about sharing her faith, so she doesn’t want to be on TV representing her Christian school, least of all on a show where the ‘prize’ is a date with such a p...more

When picking e-books to review from Booksneeze, sometimes it is a lucky dip unless the author is one you are familiar with or in this case, the cover of this book looked really good, so I thought I would give it a read and OMG it was amazing and I loved it too bits.
If you have ever watched reality TV Shows like Beauty and the Geek or The Bachelor , then it will give you an idea of what First Date is like. Jonathan Jackson, is the son of the President and his father for publicity has chosen 100...more

I made a mistake last night. It all started when I planned to go to bed and mistakenly thought that reading the first few chapters of First Date wouldn't take long. Well, I couldn't put the book down, and spent far too long reading on an iPad in a dark room.
First Date is loosely based on Esther. Unlike Hadassah , which sticks faithfully to the story and time period, First Date is a much looser interpretation of the story. The story is shifted forward to our time period and the king becomes the...more

I loved the concept of the book. It sounded fun and relevant, exactly what a YA novel should sound like...But...well, let's see:

The good:
The character development was nice. Kara specially was really well written (perhaps too well?). I also liked the back story of Addy's parents. It brought tears to my eyes, it felt that real and the pain was tangible.

I did however had some issues with the story
a) I think the story just progressed unnaturally. Why'd Addy get chosen? I never understood that and t...more

This book just was not for me, sadly. What seemed to be a cute idea was clouded by the less than likable characters and constant call for sympathy (which I remained unanswered).

Addy was chosen, but she wants absolutely nothing to do with The Book of Love, the new reality show to win a date with the president's son. After some convincing from her friends and family, she decides that maybe God has a plan for her, even if she is clueless to what it might be. She goes on the show, rather reluctantly...more

You’re either going to love it or hate it. I usually don’t read books with obvious religious undertones because I want to avoid the cliché that seems to always pop up in that type of book; however, I found myself reading First Date. The lure of the plot line had me intrigued. I couldn’t resist a teenage version of The Bachelor in book form.

The idea of having the President’s son act as said “bachelor” to find a prom date was unique. Wondering why the First Son would be on a t.v. reality show wit...more
Joy (joyous reads)
I sometimes buy books without knowing what it's about just to put some variety on my bookshelves - and yes, I'm quite aware that this book hardly represent a rebellious change from my usual reads. This is really not a far cry from say, an errant Stephen King novel in my shelf. Nevertheless, Christian fiction have never been something that I go out of my way to buy. I just haven't really had any mind-blowingly good reads in this genre as of late.

I initially liked the premise of this book. Basical...more

FIRST DATE
By Krista McGee

When 17 year old Addy Davidson is picked by her principal to represent her school in the new reality show The Book of Love Addy is anything but thrilled. Addy has avoided the spotlight and has instead focused on her school work and getting into college. But everyone thinks this is a great chance for Addy. Principal Lawrence feels Addy would bring attention to their struggling school. Uncle Mike feels that Addy would be a light for Christ just as her parents were. Addy’s...more

I think most teenage girls would give just about anything to be in Addy's position! Staring in a reality show (think "Bachelor"!!) with the chance to go on a date with the presidents hot son. Unfortunately? Addy is quiet, and would much rather be at home leading her bible study and focusing on school.

The characters we see the most of are Addy and her new best friend - Kara, who happens to be her roommate during the taping of the show. This was a fun friendship to watch grow, and the two girls r...more

For most teen girls, the chance to be on a reality TV show and compete for a prom date with the president's son would be a dream come true, but for quiet, small-town Addy, it's more like a nightmare. As the show progresses, will Addy realize that perhaps God has bigger plans for her (and the show) than just a first date?

Loosely based on the Biblical story of Esther, First Date is a fun read. Although the premise of the book is light, the book does delve into deeper topics of faith and family wit...more

First date by Krista McGee was a fun read, that has you laughing and smiling all the way through.

Addy Davidson discovers God's unexpected plans for her life when a reality TV show turns her quiet existence on its head.

The orphaned daughter of missionaries, Addy is quite content to stay in the shadows and never draw attention to herself. But when she's selected for a reality TV show to try to become the President son's prom date-a show she didn't audition for-she's suddenly in America's spotlig...more

"First Date" by Krista McGee is unexpectedly delightful. It is so much fun that I devoured it in one sitting. Yes this book talks about God, but it does it in such an underhanded way that it is simply a pleasure to read it. This means you do not have to be a Christian to read this book. If you like a sweet romance mixed with wonderful characters that will grab hold of your heart, then you will love this quick read. The orphaned daughter of missionaries, Addy Davidson is not like your typical tee...more

ARG. I just wrote a redo review on this and it got lost. =(

Okay-let's just get to the point.

Liked the plot of the book. 100 girls trying to win a prom date with the President's son Jonathon. Yep, silly, cheesy. Great. Love it.

I didn't like that Abby felt like she had to make abrupt declaration of her religion to Kara. It was AWKWARD. I would have rather she eased into it with a "Hey do you go church?" instead of a dramatic "I need to tell you something.....I'm a Christian." Kara, her roommate, a...more

I enjoyed this book. I found the main characters laid back and it just made the book a fun read. I also like the humor that each character had in the book, smiling through a book always makes the pages turn faster.

As soon as I read the description for the book I knew that I had to read it. I am a sucker for anything that has to do with tv shows, blind dates or a popular person dating or meeting a not so popular person.

I really enjoyed the character of Addy. Towards the end I was a bit taken back...more

I found this book delightfully wonderful. First Date can easily be viewed as what would happen if Queen Esther from the Bible was ever put on the reality show The Bachelor. In this book Addy , just like Queen Esther did not what the spot light , did not want to be part of the chosen. Throughout the book you learn form Addy just how hard it is to trust God sometimes , but that there is always a reason for everything . I also enjoyed the way that Addy had to remember that she was a Christian and...more

I remember, way back before there was a huge increase in reality TV, watching the very first season of The Bachelor. My mom and I would talk about who should win, about the contestants, about their dates, about the guy looking for the gal. I loved it. Of course, nowadays reality TV seems to have taken over the airwaves and a viewer is hard-pressed to find a TV station that doesn’t have a reality TV show, whether it’s the millionth season of Survivor, a show on the real housewives of the latest “...more

Firstly, I need to say this before commenting further about First Date. First Date is the first book I'm reading in the Christian contemporary Teens genre that has romance in it but no kissing scene. It was squeaky clean throughout. Not that kissing scenes are always dirty, but I constantly expected Addy and Jonathon to kiss, but they didn't. I'm still trying to decide if I should be disappointed with that or not.

Addy wasn't a very likeable character at first, but she grew on me. Her dependence...more
