This is probably a great cookbook for less confident baking vegans, because the recipes are detailed and made from ingredients most people would be able to find in an organic grocery. I was turned off by the number of recipes that just seemed to sub in vegan ingredients (heavily relying on vegan margarine and vegan cream cheese), without looking more outside the box and using ingredients that stand alone without trying to be something else. The lack of coconut products makes the recipes feel dat...more

This is a difficult book for me to review. Let me say that, in theory, I love it! It's fun, accessible, and full of mouthwatering treats that don't look too terribly challenging to create. Yummmmy!!! If I lived in a world where calories and fat somehow didn't matter, I would definitely want to get my fingers sticky making these recipes.

Unfortunately, I live in the real world. And, thus, I couldn't bring myself to make any of these recipes :-( Maybe if you were having a very special occasion, or...more

Brownies: I often bake brownies when I'm trying to judge the quality of a vegan cookbook. Because the traditional recipe is so dependent on eggs, vegan brownie recipes tend to be kinda weird. The best I'd tried up till now required the baker to make a roux on the stovetop! This recipe also requires some stovetop preparation -- namely, melting chocolate and margarine with brewed coffee -- and the quantities are kind of odd (it called for something like 2-3/4 cu plus 1 tbsp sugar). But the end res...more

If you want deserts that taste like conventional deserts but without the animal products, then this is the book for you! One caveat is animal products with vegan products is not cheap. My daughter had to tweak some of the recipes to omit or replace any alcoholic ingredients, but the taste is still awesome. Since I'm on Weight Watchers, though, I've had to send most of her creations--after a taste, of course--out the door so she can bring them to school or give them to her friends.

Every recipe enticing, wanting to own this one some day. So far we've made the double chocolate chip cookies and the brownies. And the vegan paradise bakery/cafe in Columbia Heights delivered all these pig-outably tempting treats and a full menu. Another triumph against those who keep telling me vegan food is healthy and leaves you hungry.

I tried the brownies but they weren't good. The problem: how much is 2 ounces chocolate? I wasn't chopping my own block o' choc, as suggested, but using a bag of chocolate chips. One third cup? They ended up not chocolatey enough. Frustrating!

The recipes are fantastic! I bought this because I love the bakery, but kind of had no real hope the recipes here would match up. They did - and finally I have some good vegan cake recipes in my back pocket.

I got a copy of this book after taking a cupcakes & cocktails class with Doron in Washington, DC. She definitely knows what she's doing and the recipes are delicious.

I agree with another reviewer: this is a great book for special occasion sweets. Also, I would've liked to see more pics of the food!

It was fun to read about her Cupcake Wars win, but I didn't see a single gluten-free recipe in this collection.

I haven't had a chance to try any recipes yet, which is the true test of a cookbook, for me, but the information and recipes are clear and written in an easy, conversational style. I like the tidbits and explanations--I've been baking for 30 years and I learned new things. There are all kinds of sweets here--pies, cakes, cookies, breads, muffins, and the like. Looking forward to trying some of the recipes.

Looking forward to trying the coconut cream pie and Little Devils.

Made the Chocolate Love Cake w/Mocha Frosting for a birthday gathering at work (spiked the frosting by substituting Kahlua for some of the liquid). My coworkers were impressed and kept asking how it could be so moist and chocolatey without butter, eggs, and milk. I will try the Tiramisu Cake next!
