The author requested I read and review this book and I told her I was backed up and would get to it when I had a chance. I downloaded it onto the Kindle and thought as I was getting ready for bed just to have a quick peek at it. Well I didn’t put it down for some time, I kept waiting for a boring bit and finally I had to put it down and go to sleep. I picked it up the next day and read until my dental appointment and then finished it at home an hour or so later. I really enjoyed the suspense and...more

A stalker who stalks other stalkers...thrilling..., September 4, 2012

The Devil's Game

S.L. Pierce is an author with the ability to drag readers kicking and screaming into her psychologically twisted worlds, and once we're there she refuses to let go.

In "The Devil's Game," Doctor Gloria Pike is deeply vested in a patient with an unusual psychopathology: a stalker who stalks other stalkers. The case might have been vaguely interesting to another psychologist, but Gloria sees th...more

Excerpt:
Ambitious psychologist Dr. Gloria Pike thinks her new patient is the one she has been waiting for. The one that will bring her fame and fortune with her groundbreaking new therapy. Rachel Pendelton is on the verge of living her dream. She's finally overcome the final hurdle to graduating and is waiting to hear about her dream job. But all of that is threatened when someone starts stalking her. Patient X is disturbed. That much is clear. But who is playing who and who is really stalking R...more

It's hard to come up with a new twist for a mystery, yet S.I. Pierce did so. The premise of a stalker who is stalking another stalker adds complexity and makes it harder to predict who the villain is and what that person's ultimate agenda is. I especially enjoyed the sections written from a psychiatrist's viewpoint, and the way her character was gradually and believeably developed. The writing flowed well and provided enough detail about character, scene, and backstory to engage me without slowi...more

"The Devil's Game" is like a bag of Fritos -- salty, addictive, & fun. Like I do with my gastronomic guilty pleasure, I zipped through this book & then lay back on the couch exhausted & bummed that it was over.

Mystery/thrillers are tricky. They have to keep you guessing while giving you enough clues to stay in the game. We need to know more than the characters so that we can scream out warnings to them. The bad guys need to be scary bad and the good guys -- well, they don't need to...more

This story about a girl and her stalker – and her stalker’s stalker intent on ending things badly – was highly suspenseful and kept me guessing to the end regarding the real culprit. A well written psychological thriller with great characterization and pacing, The Devil’s Game switches scenes from an ambition-driven psychiatr...more

just when I thought I figured out this book it seemed like another piece to the puzzle came out of nowhere and proved me wrong. I figured out who Patient X was rather quickly but that is only a section of the puzzle of who is stalking Rachel and by no means ruins the rest of the mystery.

This book is fast paced and exciting. In some places it gets creepy; in a good way. I didn’t like that it seemed to skip weeks at a time without notice, leave you feeling like you missed a page or two.

I liked t...more

I love a good thriller and don't normally write reviews, but with all the four stars I felt compelled to give my opinion.

Unfortunately The Devil's Game fell flat for me. I figured out who patient X was shortly after the character was introduced and who the stalker was not long after. I never felt a real connection to the protagonist Rachel and wanted to learn more about patient X, but never really did. Pierce never divulge's enough about the characters to truly make one care if they live or die....more

Psychotic patients, stalkers, and innocent college students are the major players in "The Devil's Game."

Two perspectives combined create this story from beginning to the intertwined end. From one side, an ambitious psychologist, Dr. Pike, tries to learn the inner-workings of the mind of Patient X and how he or she will react if pushed right to the edge. On the other, the victim of all the suspenseful happenings, Rachel, is trying to determine who amongst those around her is stalking her and how...more

This gripping tale of a very disturbed stalker kept me entertained from start to finish; once I'd started, I could hardly put the book down. The characters were expertly drawn, from the somewhat vapid but highly likeable victim, Rachel, to the over-ambitious psychotherapist, Gloria Pike. I cared about Rachel and found myself saying things like, "No, Rachel, you don't want to go back in there!"

There were enough surprises and twists to keep me guessing all the way to the end. Because of the title...more

Warning: Before starting this book...go ahead and sit at the edge of your seat because that's where you'll end up. This is one PSYCHOlogical thriller that will keep you checking your doors and windows to make sure they're locked. All the characters are likable, even though you feel like slapping them a couple of times. The ending is unpredictable, the suspense and the goosebumps are real. Sit back and enjoy the ride, there's nothing you can do, but sit at the edge of your seat and hope it all tu...more

I downloaded the authors' free eBook Love Thy Neighbor and an excerpt of this book was included. Well, I didn't intend to want to buy this book because it isn't what I normally read. However, I was vested and wanted to know what happened next. It really is a good read and I am glad I ventured out of my comfort zone. It had just the right amount of scare factor. Just enough that you could still fall asleep. An interesting concept and psychological thriller of a stalker stalking a stalker. The cha...more

The book opens in the office of psychologist Gloria Pike. As the story progresses, her sessions with Patient X add to the tension of this gripping suspense thriller.

Rachel Pendelton, has left home to pursue a new career. Her life takes a disturbing turn when unexpected, anonymous gifts start appearing within her locked apartment. It quickly becomes clear she is in the sights of a stalker.

As the mystery unfolds, it seems nearly everyone Rachel knows becomes a suspect. Revelations discovered by...more

I read a lot and I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the 'Who done its?' Well, I'm happy to say--Not this time! I was guessing, re-guessing, and second guessing my theories all the way through to the very end. I love when that happens! False clues, red herrings, duplicitous characters, oh my... I'm not going to rehash the plot. Just know that If you like psychological thriller mysteries, you'll enjoy the heck out of this one. I was given a free copy of this book for my review, but would have...more

A psycho-thriller with a twist… the twist in this book is a stalker who is stalking a stalker. Intense and fast paced it was a very quick read, just too long to be a short story, and just too short to be really that captivating, figured out to soon who the real predator and Patient X was. I read the book in a day. A great find for a free download on Kindle. An enjoyable read that I would suggest it to any reader out there

Rachel has a stalker.
As a student in a strange city, she has many acquaintances all of whom could be the stalker.

The story starts off really well with interesting characters. However, towards the middle, it starts to drift and lose points.By the end, it's turning into some silly, unbelievable superhero thing that just makes the story lose all credibility.

All in all, not a nice read.

This is an edgy fast paced "who done it" that keeps you guessing till the end... Just when you think you know who it is... it isn't... or is it??!!?? A very unique tale of stalkers, murder, and psychiatrist written from two perspectives, a psychiatrist and the victim. With twist and turns, this books keeps the pages turning! I recommend this book to others who love to read intense, gripping suspense thrillers.

Excellent thriller, so intense and mysterious. There are shocks galore in this superbly written story. Never a dull moment is a massive understatement, it is gripping through out. It was a pleasure to read.

A relatively quick, intriguing read that does a good job of keeping the reader guessing.

The Devil's Game was a fast paced "Who Dunnit" book that kept me guessing up until the end. Though there were a few indiscrepencies I noted throughout the book I was pleasantly surprised by the climatic ending. A good read!

Interesting book, someone stalking someone stalking. Lots of twists. I figured parts out early but missed the big one and really missed the motive. This is a 4.5 star book.
