As with his earlier book, Frogtown, Lake Street USA helped me in some small way to connect with the people of the state in which I was born. One can see the influence of Garry Winogrand on the artist (spontaneity and suggestion are strong features of the work here), and the excerpts of interviews are well-chosen, and increase the sense of intimacy with the people depicted in the photos. I've taken one trip through this book, and saw some of the photos during the exhibit along Lake Street. I may have to buy a copy of this book instead of just borrowing it from the library...

An interesting concept. Focusing (literally) on one street. The photos and accompanying text illustrate the cosmopolitan nature that one seldom associates with the upper midwest.

this is probably my least favorite of huie's three books only in that the pictures are all pretty small. the extra text is nice, but i like the larger pictures of the other books.
