Jessa has had her named besmirched all because she's a healer. Everyone in her village thinks she has given herself to Vale's brother, King Zander. She's tarnished, wanton, used. When Zander goes missing, she's called to confirm whether she can feel his life force even as it ebbs away. She can't save him if she can't touch him. Though her heart breaks with the loss of her friend, now she'll be forced into the service of his brother, Vale.

Vale believes the rumors, that Jessa uses sexual healing a...more

Kinley Baker has created an intricate and vivid world in her novel, Ruined.. The mythology surrounding the world's development is fresh and unique. More than that, she's populated this world with rich and amazing characters.
Jessa is endearing and warm, with a quiet inner strength that has you rooting for her from the beginning. You find yourself waxing and waning with her emotions, cheering her on. A couple of times, I caught myself fussing at her for some of her decisions, which just made her...more

An excellent read that sweeps the reader away to a realm of sexy kings, castles, and true love. The emotion and beautiful romance between the hero and heroine was so touching. There were parts where I was at the edge of my seat wondering if Vale and Jessa would have their happily ever after! I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. Kinley Baker is a talented author.

Fantasy, love and intrigue combine to form a quick story that is sure to please!

Vale has spent his entire life in the shadow of his older brother, Zander. As heir, Zander has always been the responsible one. As the King, Zander was the one in control, while Vale was most often seen in the forests hunting. But when Zander goes missing, and is later declared dead, the throne is sudd...more

A couple of months ago I saw this gorgeous cover and knew I had to read the book. For those who don't know me, I love fantasy and medieval so this book was right in my wheelhouse.

I was hooked by the first chapter. The world Ms. Baker creates is well-drawn and magical. The Shadow Shifter race is complex enough to build credibility but easy enough for the reader to quickly grasp. Traveling through any shadows, the people can transcend space and time and move from place to place.

IN this world vario...more

My thoughts:
This is a wonderfully written story. I am totally in love with the characters. Vale and I had a difference of opinion and I had to set the book aside for a few days, but we are back now that he figured out that he was wrong. Jessa is a fabulous character; although I do have a few issues with the self-sacrificing moments she had, they fit the need and the story.

I was thrilled with the Varner's idea of the aroha. I think every woman would be thrilled to be that cherished. This piece o...more

This book is without a doubt a paranormal romance. It has all the elements you would need to make it a paranormal book, but it is also very heavy on the romance. I do really enjoy paranormal romance books, but often times I find that paranormal romances feel like they need to be so romance filled, that they put in a lot of unnecessary sex scenes that don't actually propel the plot. This was not at all the problem for this b...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Kinley Baker's writing style. This paranormal romance was fun to watch unfold. From the start when Jessa and Vale wanted each other from afar and had trouble accepting that reality to struggles they endured and the heartbreaking choices they had to make it was very entertaining to watch them dance around things as they find their way to each other.
I always enjoy a plot that had a lot of twists, political intrigue and mystery and this does, starting with what h...more

Vale just ascended to the throne as the King of the Shadow Shifters. Jessa is the senior healer to their race. The court forbids their union, and Vale is torn between his duty to his people, and the need to have Jessa as his own.

Vale and Jessa’s relationship is a constant struggle built on misconceptions. I enjoyed the characters and their growing relationship. The constant upheaval that comes between these two keeps the story exciting. The passion between them will keep any romance fan happy. I...more

Ruined is the steamy and stormy tale of Jessa and Vale, the Healer and the reluctant Shadow Shifter King.

Vale, after his brother King Zander’s death, is faced with a throne he doesn’t want, a corrupt court, advisors who are not afraid to use murder or threaten the passion he feels for the Senior Healer.

Jessa risks her own life each time she saves someone from death. This selflessness isn’t enough to deter the rumors floating around her people for b...more

The world created in Ruined was really interesting. I liked how certain people could ride shadows and they'd instantly be where they needed to be.I was jealous every time Jessa and Vale got to travel that way! I also liked how it was explained that there were different realms, and how Jessa and Vale's ancestors came into this Realm from the Mortal one because they didn't like how battle hungry the anglo saxons were that attacked the area of where they lived. After arriving in this realm, they s...more

Kinley Baker is a new author and Ruined is a wonderful first book. It is a book about nations that have escaped the greed and envy and mistrust of other dimensions to find a peaceable way to survive. It is about wanting what you can’t have. Forbidden love and uncontrollable greed. It is very difficult to write a story that so many are trying to write. To come up with a new slant. World building as I have often said is a difficult task. And yet Ms Baker does a wonderful job.

Ruined is about a girl...more

I loved this book! It’s a different type of paranormal read that kept me turning its pages non stop in anticipation. I found myself addicted to it, it’s charm and its characters. Put it this way… I read it in less than a day and could not bring myself to go to sleep until I was through! It’s a very romantic, touching; exciting and magical read that’s packed full of love, treachery, deceit and multiple surprises that will have you holding your breath in anticipation. Let's see, what can I say about Ruined? Oh my. *Deep sighs of orgasmic passion.* I repeat, oh my. I did want to crawl into this book several times and kick Vale in the shins because for a smart proud man he is a dumbass when it comes to Jessa. Still, he knows how to satisfy his woman. Oh my. Other than that, wow, this is my kind of book. I am a Kinley Baker fan. Oh my. I love the world she swept me into. It's such an easy fantasy to enjoy and the magic is killer. The romance was fun. What a unique and deep world Ms. Baker has created in Ruined. I'm jealous I didn't think of it myself. This is a worthy read on many levels. The Well of Souls holds the power of the people and Vale has to watch his brother's life extinguish and the mantel of power fall solely on his shoulders. Jessa is the King's healer and too great a temptation for for the new king. The odds are against the two who struggle to understand their feelings for each other. This is a must read for those with a love...more

Wow. Great read. I fell in love with these characters. I just couldn't put down the book. I had to know what happened next and I love that. Though I lost some valuable sleep it was worth it!!

The passion and intense emotion was captivating. Kinley Baker wove a deep, complex tale that kept me engrossed from start to finish. Well done!!

Okay, Okay. I love a tortured love story. And this soooo delivers :) *Sigh and swoon* Thank you Kinley for making Vale so yummy. And for making Jessa feminine while a pillar of strength. You combined paranormal and historical elements to perfection, making the book zip along. Congrats on such a stellar debut. Can't wait to read what's next!

Interesting world building and characters that captivated me to the end, but there were also some tropes of "category romance" (ie - Harlequin books) that I'm personally not a huge fan of, which lead to some frustration with the book. Still, there is enough in the world to make me want to read more about the secondary characters.

RUINED is a high fantasy romance. Dense in story, it will absolutely sweep you away to a different time and place. The romance between Jessa and Vale is touch and go, making you wait until almost the very last page to see if they get their happy ever after. If you're a fan of Fantasy, do check this one out!

Recommends it for: Lovers of paranormal romance
Ruined very quickly pulls you in with the attraction between Jessa, a Healer, and Vale, who is soon to be King in the Realm of Shadows. Love pulls them together, yet duty tears them apart. Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down to see what Jessa and Vale would choose - love or duty.

3.5 Interesting fantasy world and premise. Started it weeks ago but got caught up in things. Baker certainly puts the hero and heroine through a lot between the traditions of their culture and the mechanisms of a lot of corrupt people. Interested in checking out the others in this series.

This book was great. The chemistry between the two main characters is undeniable, and the romance didn't take anything away from the kingdom part of the story. Kinley is amazing, and I will definitely be reading her future books.

I really enjoyed this fun, fast-paced novel. It was a welcome retreat into a skillfully drawn world complete with heroes, villains, and a heroine who is just plain likable. Congratulations, Miss Baker, on a fine debut!

Kinley Baker has a terminally tender heart and an inconvenient sense of humor. She loves puppies and cries at celebrity weddings. Kinley supports all supernatural lifestyles and believes "happy ever after" isn't only for the normal. Her books Ruined, Denied and Freed are available now from Crescent Moon Press. Excuse My Fairy is available now from Etopia Press. Endured, the final novel in the Shad...more
