Saul Bellow clearly was as interesting when speaking extemporaneously as he was when in his carefully written, edited, and published writings. He spoke in the same way he wrote; what you read is his voice.

His last wife Janis alludes to this in the more recent "Letters" when she describes their first meeting at the University of Chicago. It's well beyond "speaking in complete sentences" which is hard enough for most busy professionals to do.

Saul Bellow was born in Lachine, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, in 1915, and was raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago, received his Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1937, with honors in sociology and anthropology, did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, and served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.
