Taking People With You: The Only Way to Make BIG Things Happen
by
David Novak
David Novak learned long ago that you can't lead a great organization of any size without getting your people aligned, enthusiastic, and focused relentlessly on the mission. But how do you do that? There are countless leadership books, but how many will actually help a Taco Bell shift manager, a Fortune 500 CEO, a new entrepreneur, or anyone in between?

Chapter 2: Be Your Best Self: Be Yourself, Know Yourself, Grow Yourself
Chapter 3: Be an Avid Learner: Seek and Build Know-How
Chapter 4: Unleash the Power of People

This really does have some good tips and ideas in it, and I expect Novak has done a lot to promote a functional, healthy, and successful work environment at the corporations he's managed or headed, which is a great thing for his employees and shareholders. But those corporations have mostly been purveyors of fast food and junk foods, and I found that fact rather deflating to my interest in the content. That's not really fair, I know--I have been to some of those restaurants and even enjoyed some...more
It’s rare to be given insight into the mind of a business leader (or just any leader, for that matter) who has “been there, done that” and ended up with plenty of champagne moments. Goodness knows there’s plenty of people we all point to who haven’t done things quite so well.
Before reading this, I didn’t know much about David Novak. After reading this book I probably still don’t, but that’s clearly not what he set out to achieve with this book (this is a surprising thing for these types of books...more

This book is great for people trying to succeed in a high business position. However as an eighth grader just looking for leadership tips I found it hard to relate. The authors style didn't give me much of a reason to keep reading. I found him to be the only character and the book was more about his story rather than making your own. You can tell that the author is well educated based on his vocabulary and diction. Overall the book was just average and for my purpose moderately helpful.
Great, important subject. Ultimately it couldn't hold my interest. Perhaps its because the examples were hard to relate to ("When I invented Cool Ranch Doritos...") or difficult to translate into my current situation ("As CEO of YUM Brands on my visits to China we talk about these things...").
I liked the topic, but wish I fit closer the profile of the end reader that the author had in mind.

I received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway. The book provided great information to improve management and leadership skills in addition to advice on how to motivate your team to reach various goals. While the focus is is geared toward those running a large business or organization, you are still able to apply the information in everyday management roles on a smaller scale. I really appreciated the chapters on goal setting, culture and recognition as these fundamental principles apply in a...more

I work for YUM so it’s hard for me to step back and know how this book reads to someone on the outside. For me it’s a good insight into David and how his experiences have driven our culture. I would also strongly recommend this book for anyone who is thinking of working for YUM because we really do live this stuff every day.

Bob Sutton loves this new management book, Taking People with You http://bitly.com/zZWwKv "Great Read and Most Useful"
"impressed me so much because it shows how to become more self-aware as a leader, and spotlights the specific skills that every leader needs to be effective."

This is a wonderful up to date workbook really of how to improve your working relationships, improve performance, get things done, how to get people motivated. These are those big things that so many businesses devote so much time, effort and put together work groups to get thongs done. This book can really help make sense of it all. I work as a nurse in a hospital and so much of this can be used there as well. I did actually pass it on to our administrative director. Thought she would like it a...more
I won this book on Goodreads give away.
I would have really liked it if a few of my past supervisors/bosses would have read this book it has a lot of good information on how to deal with people within and outside your business. David Novak's attitude is that there is more to being a good leader then just barking orders that you need to learn to communicate with your employees and help them to become an essential part of your winning team. A good book for someone in a management position to read.

Really enjoyed this. Heard Novak speak at an event a few weeks ago and the book went along with the speech (or vice versa). Great insight into leadership, developing the talent around you, and moving an organization along. I love the ideas of announcing your goals in order to be held accountable to them and also to give silly awards for recognition of a job well done.
Fantastic book, one of the best books on leadership that I have read. The book is extremely well-organized, and lays out a comprehensive vision for being a great leader, and building a leadership culture. Novak describes a process for becoming a people-centered leader, and gives clear examples of how that sort of leadership plays out in multiple business examples. Highly recommended for anyone in any kind of leadership role, not just business.
Best book on leadership I've read. I took a serious two months to read this, highlighting passages like a stalker. I like that there are some exercises and self-evaluation questions. I reccommend this book to anyone who is serious about improving themself, as well as those who want to grow in leadership.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I am so glad I won this one!

I read this book as part of a case competition. There are a couple of though-provoking points in the book, but overall I felt that the author tried to cover too much ground and the content was overwhelmingly obvious common sense.
